Assessment of natural resource conditions in and adjacent to Biscayne National Park. Natural Resource Report NPS/BISC/NRR—2012/598

    Get PDF
This report is an assessment of the conditions of natural resources in Biscayne National Park (BNP) based on the compilation, review and evaluation of existing information on the Park’s natural resources. This review evaluates threats and stressors, and is intended to improve understanding of BNP resources to help guide Park management to address the identified threats, which are supported by enhanced data collection, research and assessment efforts. The report is focused on broad resource components, namely terrestrial resources and aquatic systems including: wetlands, canals, bay waters, marine/reef areas and ground waters. Biotic and abiotic resource components are considered in the review

Quantitation of capsaicinoids in Capsicum chacoense A.T. Hunziker (Solanaceae) and in pharmaceutical dosage forms

Quantitation of capsaicinoids in Capsicum oleoresin has been performed by relative techniques as UV spectrophotometry and HPLC. The determinations were done on the oleoresin obtained from a local species, Capsicum chacoense A.T.Hunziker, as well as on oleoresins included in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The techniques employed are accesible to convencional laboratories of pharmaceutical analysis and can be used to the study of oleoresins coming from different species.

In vivo study of the complement system during infusion ofradiographic contrast media

It has been claimed that activation of the complement system may play a role in reaction to radiographic contrast media (RCM) infusion. In order to clarify the effects of RCM on the complement system, three different parameters (CH50, C3a, and C1 inhibitor) were measured in 20 patients undergoing intravenous pyelography for diagnostic purposes. We found no significant changes in C3a levels, but CH50 and C1 inhibitor fell significantly at the different sampling times; however, the decreases lost significance when the data were corrected for hemodilution with the total protein content of each sample as a reference. We conclude that RCM infusion does not activate the complement syste
