Two remarks about nilpotent operators of order two
We present two novel results about Hilbert space operators which are
nilpotent of order two. First, we prove that such operators are indestructible
complex symmetric operators, in the sense that tensoring them with any operator
yields a complex symmetric operator. In fact, we prove that this property
characterizes nilpotents of order two among all nonzero bounded operators.
Second, we establish that every nilpotent of order two is unitarily equivalent

Detection of enteric parasite DNA in household and bed dust samples: potential for infection transmission.
BACKGROUND: Enteric parasites are transmitted in households but few studies have sampled inside households for parasites and none have used sensitive molecular methods. METHODS: We collected bed and living room dust samples from households of children participating in a clinical trial of anthelmintic treatment in rural coastal Ecuador. Dust was examined for presence of DNA specific for 11 enteric parasites (Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Toxocara canis and T. cati, Giardia lamblia, Blastocystis hominis, Cryptosporidium spp., and Entamoeba histolytica) by quantitative PCR (qPCR). RESULTS: Of the 38 households sampled, 37 had positive dust for at least one parasite and up to 8 parasites were detected in single samples. Positivity was greatest for B. hominis (79% of household samples) indicating a high level of environmental fecal contamination. Dust positivity rates for individual pathogens were: S. stercoralis (52%), A. lumbricoides (39%), G. lamblia (39%), Toxocara spp. (42%), hookworm (18%) and T. trichiura (8%). DNA for Cryptosporidium spp. and E. histolytica was not detected. Bed dust was more frequently positive than floor samples for all parasites detected. Positivity for A. lumbricoides DNA in bed (adjusted OR: 10.0, 95% CI: 2.0-50.1) but not floor dust (adjusted OR: 3.6, 95% CI: 0.3-37.9) was significantly associated with active infections in children. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first use of qPCR on environmental samples to detect a wide range of enteric pathogen DNA. Our results indicate widespread contamination of households with parasite DNA and raise the possibility that beds, under conditions of overcrowding in a humid tropical setting, may be a source of transmission
Adsorption of proteins to thin-films of PDMS and its effect on the adhesion of human endothelial cells
This paper describes a simple and inexpensive procedure to produce thin-films of poly(dimethylsiloxane). Such films were characterized by a variety of techniques (ellipsometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, atomic force microscopy, and goniometry) and used to investigate the adsorption kinetics of three model proteins (fibrinogen, collagen type-I, and bovine serum albumin) under different conditions. The information collected from the protein adsorption studies was then used to investigate the adhesion of human dermal microvascular endothelial cells. The results of these studies suggest that these films can be used to model the surface properties of microdevices fabricated with commercial PDMS. Spectroscopic Observations of Convective Patterns in the Atmospheres of Metal-Poor Stars
Convective line asymmetries in the optical spectrum of two metal-poor stars,
Gmb1830 and HD140283, are compared to those observed for solar metallicity
stars. The line bisectors of the most metal-poor star, the subgiant HD140283,
show a significantly larger velocity span that the expectations for a
solar-metallicity star of the same spectral type and luminosity class. The
enhanced line asymmetries are interpreted as the signature of the lower metal
content, and therefore opacity, in the convective photospheric patterns. These
findings point out the importance of three-dimensional convective velocity
fields in the interpretation of the observed line asymmetries in metal-poor
stars, and in particular, urge for caution when deriving isotopic ratios from
observed line shapes and shifts using one-dimensional model atmospheres.
The mean line bisector of the photospheric atomic lines is compared with
those measured for the strong Mg I b1 and b2 features. The upper part of the
bisectors are similar, and assuming they overlap, the bottom end of the
stronger lines, which are formed higher in the atmosphere, goes much further to
the red. This is in agreement with the expected decreasing of the convective
blue-shifts in upper atmospheric layers, and compatible with the high velocity
redshifts observed in the chromosphere, transition region, and corona of

Oxygen abundances in unevolved metal-poor stars from near-UV OH lines
We have performed a detailed oxygen abundance analysis of 23 metal-poor
(-3.0<[Fe/H]<-0.3) unevolved halo stars and one giant through the OH bands in
the near UV, using high-resolution echelle spectra. Oxygen is found to be
overabundant with respect to iron in these stars, with the [O/Fe] ratio
increasing from 0.6 to 1 between [Fe/H]=-1.5 and -3.0. The behavior of the
oxygen overabundance with respect to [Fe/H] is similar to that seen in previous
works based on OI IR triplet data (Abia and Rebolo 1989; Tomkin et al. 1992;
Cavallo, Pilachowski, and Rebolo 1997). Contrary to the previously accepted
picture, our oxygen abundances, derived from low-excitation OH lines, agree
well with those derived from high-excitation lines of the triplet. For nine
stars in common with Tomkin et al. we obtain a mean difference of 0.00+/-0.11
dex with respect to the abundances determined from the triplet using the same
stellar parameters and model photospheres. For four stars in our sample we have
found measurements of the [OI] 6300 A line in the literature, from which we
derive oxygen abundances consistent (average difference 0.09 dex) with those
based on OH lines, showing that the long standing controversy between oxygen
abundances from forbidden and permitted lines in metal-poor unevolved stars can
be resolved. Our new oxygen abundances show a smooth extension of the
Edvardsson et al.'s (1993) [O/Fe] versus metallicity curve to much lower
abundances, with a slope -0.31+/- 0.11 (taking into account the error bars in
both oxygen abundances and metallicities) in the range -3<[Fe/H]<-1.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 3 table
Osteoarthritis:Mechanistic Insights, Senescence, and Novel Therapeutic Opportunities
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease. In the last years, the research community has focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that led to the pathogenesis of the disease, trying to identify different molecular and clinical phenotypes along with the discovery of new therapeutic opportunities. Different types of cell-to-cell communication mechanisms have been proposed to contribute to OA progression, including mechanisms mediated by connexin43 (Cx43) channels or by small extracellular vesicles. Furthermore, changes in the chondrocyte phenotype such as cellular senescence have been proposed as new contributors of the OA progression, changing the paradigm of the disease. The use of different drugs able to restore chondrocyte phenotype, to reduce cellular senescence and senescence-associated secretory phenotype components, and to modulate ion channel activity or Cx43 appears to be promising therapeutic strategies for the different types of OA. In this review, we aim to summarize the current knowledge in OA phenotypes related with aging and tissue damage and the new therapeutic opportunities currently available
A Consistency Test of Spectroscopic Gravities for Late-Type Stars
Chemical analyses of late-type stars are usually carried out following the
classical recipe: LTE line formation and homogeneous, plane-parallel,
flux-constant, and LTE model atmospheres. We review different results in the
literature that have suggested significant inconsistencies in the spectroscopic
analyses, pointing out the difficulties in deriving independent estimates of
the stellar fundamental parameters and hence,detecting systematic errors.
The trigonometric parallaxes measured by the HIPPARCOS mission provide
accurate appraisals of the stellar surface gravity for nearby stars, which are
used here to check the gravities obtained from the photospheric iron ionization
balance. We find an approximate agreement for stars in the metallicity range -1
<= [Fe/H] <= 0, but the comparison shows that the differences between the
spectroscopic and trigonometric gravities decrease towards lower metallicities
for more metal-deficient dwarfs (-2.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -1.0), which casts a shadow
upon the abundance analyses for extreme metal-poor stars that make use of the
ionization equilibrium to constrain the gravity. The comparison with the
strong-line gravities derived by Edvardsson (1988) and Fuhrmann (1998a)
confirms that this method provides systematically larger gravities than the
ionization balance. The strong-line gravities get closer to the physical ones
for the stars analyzed by Fuhrmann, but they are even further away than the
iron ionization gravities for the stars of lower gravities in Edvardsson's
sample. The confrontation of the deviations of the iron ionization gravities in
metal-poor stars reported here with departures from the excitation balance
found in the literature, show that they are likely to be induced by the same

The Limited Influence of Pressure Gradients on Late-type Stellar Line Asymmetries
Line asymmetries and shifts are a powerful tool for studying velocity fields
in the stellar photospheres. Other effects, however, could also generate
asymmetries blurring the information of the velocity patterns. We have studied
the shifts and asymmetries induced in the profiles of spectral lines by
pressure effects. The best theoretical and experimental data on line broadening
and shifts caused by collisions with atomic hydrogen were used to analyze the
NaI D and three CaI lines. Line bisectors of synthetic spectra computed with
accurate data for the NaI and CaI lines are compared with very high resolution
high signal-to-noise ratio solar spectra and indicate that pressure broadening
reproduces the wings of the observed lines, but pressure shifts introduce

Geological, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of REE-bearing Las Mercedes bauxite deposit, Dominican Republic
Bauxite deposits, traditionally the main source of 'aluminum, have been recently targeted for their remarkable contents in rare earth elements (REE). With Sigma REE (lanthanoids + Sc + Y) concentrations systematically higher than similar to 1400 ppm (ay. = 1530 ppm), the Las Mercedes karstic bauxites in the Dominican Republic rank as one of the REE-richest deposits of its style.The bauxitic ore in the Las Mercedes deposit is mostly unlithified and has a homogeneous-massive lithostructure, with only local cross-stratification and graded bedding. The dominant arenaceous and round-grained texture is composed of bauxite particles and subordinate ooids, pisoids and carbonate clasts. Mineralogically, the bauxite ore is composed mostly of gibbsite and lesser amounts of kaolinite, hematite, boehmite, anatase, goethite, chromian spinel and zircon. Identified REE-minerals include cerianite and monazite-Ce, whose composition accounts for the steady enrichment in light-relative to medium-and heavy-REE of the studied bauxites.Considering the paleo-geomorphology of the study area, we propose that bauxites in the Las Mercedes deposit are the product of the erosion and deposition of lithified bauxites located at higher elevations in the Bahoruco ranges. Based on the available data, we suggest a mixed lithological source for the bauxite deposits at the district scale: bedrock carbonates and an igneous source of likely mafic composition.
