An automated procedure for photometric titration of red wine and associated instrumentation is described. The procedure was based on the flow-batch approach implemented employing multicommutation. The photometric detection was carried out using a homemade LED-based photometer. The mixing device, LED, and photodetector were attached to the titration chamber in order to form a compact and small-sized unit. The flow system comprised an automatic injector and three-way solenoid valves, which were controlled by a microcomputer through an electronic interface card. The software, written in Quick BASIC 4.5, was designed with abilities to accomplish all steps of the titration procedure including data acquisition and real-time processing to decide about the course of titration in the following step and so forth, until the titration endpoint was reached. The usefulness of the proposed titration system was demonstrated by analyzing red wine samples. When results were compared with those obtained using the AOAC reference method, no significant difference was observed at the [Formula: see text] confidence level. A relative standard deviation of ca [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) was obtained when processing a typical red wine sample containing 7.3 [Formula: see text] total acidity expressed as tartaric acid

    Methane production in dairy cows

Enteric methane (CH4) emissions vary between individual cows, and this variation is attributed to both animal and dietary factors. In addition, measurement technique of in vivo CH4 emissions from individual animals still represents a major challenge for successful emissions mitigation strategies. This thesis investigated the contribution of different factors to between-animal variation in CH4 production, in order to improve the current knowledge of its biological basis. In a study comparing on-farm systems for measuring CH4 emissions from large numbers of animals and the variation between individual animals, the GreenFeed system was used as the normal set-up (flux method) or modified to mimic gas analysers systems based on CH4 concentrations (sniffer system) to measure CH4 emissions. Measurements taken by the GreenFeed system proved be more reliable than those made by the simulated sniffer method. The GreenFeed data were consistent with literature values determined in respiration chambers, while the sniffer method were poorly correlated to flux method values and were not significantly related to either feed intake or milk yield. Despite GreenFeed being a spot sampling method, it proved to be a promising tool for ranking cows as high and low CH4 emitters. A meta-analysis based on an individual cow dataset investigating the effects of between-cow variation and related animal variables on predicted CH4 emissions from dairy cows. Between-cow variation in fermentation pattern are not likely be the major factor influencing predicted in vivo CH4 emissions. Variation and repeatability for volatile fatty acid concentrations were greater for ruminal concentrations than molar proportions, indicating strong control by the individual cow. Digestion kinetics variables were more repeatable than rumen fermentation or microbial synthesis, as a result of variations in passage rate. In studies in which late-cut silage and rolled barley were gradually replaced with early-cut silage in the diet of dairy cows, production responses and in vivo CH4 emissions were studied in 16 intact lactating cows and possible physiological mechanisms were assessed in four rumen-cannulated cows. Improvements in forage quality by graded addition of early-cut silage was an effective strategy to reduce concentrate supplementation, without compromising performance or increasing CH4 emissions in lactating dairy cows. Differences in intake between treatments were partly compensated by differences in silage digestibility

Reviewers' ratings and bibliometric indicators: hand in hand when assessing over research proposals?

The peer review system has been traditionally challenged due to its many limitations especially for allocating funding. Bibliometric indicators may well present themselves as a complement. Objective: We analyze the relationship between peers' ratings and bibliometric indicators for Spanish researchers in the 2007 National R&D Plan for 23 research fields. We analyze peers' ratings for 2333 applications. We also gathered principal investigators' research output and impact and studied the differences between accepted and rejected applications. We used the Web of Science database and focused on the 2002-2006 period. First, we analyzed the distribution of granted and rejected proposals considering a given set of bibliometric indicators to test if there are significant differences. Then, we applied a multiple logistic regression analysis to determine if bibliometric indicators can explain by themselves the concession of grant proposals. 63.4% of the applications were funded. Bibliometric indicators for accepted proposals showed a better previous performance than for those rejected; however the correlation between peer review and bibliometric indicators is very heterogeneous among most areas. The logistic regression analysis showed that the main bibliometric indicators that explain the granting of research proposals in most cases are the output (number of published articles) and the number of papers published in journals that belong to the first quartile ranking of the Journal Citations Report. Bibliometric indicators predict the concession of grant proposals at least as well as peer ratings. Social Sciences and Education are the only areas where no relation was found, although this may be due to the limitations of the Web of Science's coverage. These findings encourage the use of bibliometric indicators as a complement to peer review in most of the analyzed areas

Sustainability aspects of milk production in Sweden

Resource use efficiency and economic initiatives point towards using less human-edible input in ruminant food production. This could also promote the nutrient-rich dairy products to consumers in comparison with alternative plant-based drinks. The global population is growing and food production will need to increase to feed more people in the future. The Swedish government has launched a national food strategy, which aims to move Swedish food production towards self-sufficiency and sustainability, and greater exports. Simultaneously, strong economic development has stimulated consumers to request more high-value foods, such as meat and refined dairy products. At the same time, public opinion states that today's food production from ruminants is negative for the environment and contributes to climate change. This review assesses some aspects of dietary ingredient composition and feeding choices that can contribute to making Swedish dairy production more sustainable. Efficient dietary methane mitigating strategies can decrease emissions of greenhouse gases in line with European Union targets and avoid major changes in dietary consumption patterns of meat and milk from ruminants. Although feeding management seems to be the most important approach to decrease nitrogen losses, rational use of fertilizers and improved manure management practices on dairy farms should also be considered to decrease the impact of nitrogen losses to the environment

Localization of Metastases from Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Using Different Methods

We analyzed the efficiency of three different noninvasive methods in the localization of recurrent medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Nine patients (six females and three males) with biochemical evidence of disease after primary surgery were subjected to anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (anti-CEA) antibody, meta-iodo-benzylguanidine (MIBG), and computed tomography. Another female patient, in biochemical remission for six years after initial surgery, was also studied using the same methods. Three of the ten patients had negative results with all three methods (including the patient in remission). The other seven patients showed abnormal uptake of labeled anti-CEA antibody in various localizations: only two of these patients had a corresponding pathological image by computed tomography and only one by 131I MIBG. These preliminary results suggest that 131I anti-CEA scanning may be the most sensitive noninvasive method for the localization of MTC recurrences

Protection by Neuroglobin Expression in Brain Pathologies

Astrocytes play an important role in physiological, metabolic, and structural functions, and when impaired, they can be involved in various pathologies including Alzheimer, focal ischemic stroke, and traumatic brain injury. These disorders involve an imbalance in the blood flow and nutrients such as glucose and lactate, leading to biochemical and molecular changes that cause neuronal damage, which is followed by loss of cognitive and motor functions. Previous studies have shown that astrocytes are more resilient than neurons during brain insults as a consequence of their more effective antioxidant systems, transporters, and enzymes, which made them less susceptible to excitotoxicity. In addition, astrocytes synthesize and release different protective molecules for neurons, including neuroglobin, a member of the globin family of proteins. After brain injury, neuroglobin expression is induced in astrocytes. Since neuroglobin promotes neuronal survival, its increased expression in astrocytes after brain injury may represent an endogenous neuroprotective mechanism. Here, we review the role of neuroglobin in the central nervous system, its relationship with different pathologies, and the role of different factors that regulate its expression in astrocytes.GB’s work is supported by Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.Peer reviewedPeer Reviewe
