    Deep inelastic scattering, diffraction, and all that

    These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in e+e−e^+e^- collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions.     Effects of substrate deformation and sip thickness on tile/sip interface stresses for shuttle thermal protection

    A nonlinear analysis was used to study the effects of substrate deformation characteristics and strain isolator pad (SIP) thickness on TILE/SIP interface stresses for the space shuttle thermal protection system. The configuration analyzed consisted of a 5.08 cm thick, 15.24 cm square tile with a 12.7 cm square SIP footprint bordered by a 1.27 cm wide filler bar and was subjected to forces and moments representative of a 20.7 kPa aerodynamic shock passing over the tile. The SIP stress deflection curves were obtained after a 69 kPa proof load and 100 cycles conditioning at 55 kPa. The TILE/SIP interface stresses increase over flat substrate values for zero to peak substrate deformation amplitudes up to 0.191 cm by up to a factor of nearly five depending on deformation amplitude, half wave length, and location. Stresses for a 0.23 cm thick SIP found to be up to 60 percent greater than for a 0.41 cm thick SIP for identical loads and substrate deformation characteristics. A simplified method was developed for approximating the substrate location which produces maximum TILE/SIP interface stresses

    Fe I line shifts in the optical spectrum of the Sun

    New improvements in the measurement of both the optical solar spectrum and laboratory wavelengths for lines of neutral iron are combined to extract central wavelength shifts for 1446 lines observed in the Sun. This provides the largest available database of accurate solar wavelengths useful as a reference for comparison with other solar-type stars.     Magnetic activity cycles in solar-like stars: The cross-correlation technique of p-mode frequency shifts

    Aims. We aim studying the use of cross-correlation techniques to infer the frequency shifts induced by changing magnetic fields in the p-mode frequencies and provide precise estimation of the error bars. Methods. This technique and the calculation of the associated errors is first tested and validated on the Sun where the p-mode magnetic behaviour is very well known. These validation tests are performed on 6000-day time series of Sun-as-a-star observations delivered by the SoHO spacecraft. Errors of the frequency shifts are quantified through Monte Carlo simulations. The same methodology is then applied to three solar-like oscillating stars: HD 49933, observed by CoRoT, as well as KIC 3733735 and KIC 7940546 observed by Kepler. Results. We first demonstrate the reliability of the error bars computed with the Monte Carlo simulations using the Sun. From the three analyzed stars we confirm the presence of a magnetic activity cycle with this methodology in HD 49933 and we unveil seismic signature of on going magnetic variations in KIC 3733735. Finally, the third star, KIC 7940546, seems to be in a quiet regime.Comment: Paper accepted in A&A. 7 pages and 11 figure

    We discuss the order \alpha_s^2 gluon initiated QCD corrections to one particle inclusive deep inelastic processes.     Photoproduction of jets and the virtual structure of the photon

    We compute the ratio between the direct and the resolved photon components of single jet and dijet production in epep collisions for the kinematical range covered by the most recent ZEUS data. We analyse the phenomenological consequences of different models for the structure of virtual photons in these observables and compare them with the available data. We also comment on the correlation between the so called xÎłobsx_{\gamma}^{obs} and the `true' xÎłx_{\gamma}, that can be inferred from the data.Comment: epsfig, 5 figure

    Synchronization of Chaotic Systems by Common Random Forcing

    We show two examples of noise--induced synchronization. We study a 1-d map and the Lorenz systems, both in the chaotic region. For each system we give numerical evidence that the addition of a (common) random noise, of large enough intensity, to different trajectories which start from different initial conditions, leads eventually to the perfect synchronization of the trajectories. The largest Lyapunov exponent becomes negative due to the presence of the noise terms.Comment: 5 pages, uses aipproc.cls and aipproc.sty (included).
