The Rayleigh-Brillouin Spectrum in Special Relativistic Hydrodynamics
In this paper we calculate the Rayleigh-Brillouin spectrum for a relativistic
simple fluid according to three different versions available for a relativistic
approach to non-equilibrium thermodynamics. An outcome of these calculations is
that Eckart's version predicts that such spectrum does not exist. This provides
an argument to question its validity. The remaining two results, which differ
one from another, do provide a finite form for such spectrum. This raises the
rather intriguing question as to which of the two theories is a better
candidate to be taken as a possible version of relativistic non-equilibrium
thermodynamics. The answer will clearly require deeper examination of this

Infrared Study of Fullerene Planetary Nebulae
We present a study of 16 PNe where fullerenes have been detected in their
Spitzer spectra. This large sample of objects offers an unique opportunity to
test conditions of fullerene formation and survival under different metallicity
environments as we are analyzing five sources in our own Galaxy, four in the
LMC, and seven in the SMC. Among the 16 PNe under study, we present the first
detection of C60 (possibly also C70) fullerenes in the PN M 1-60 as well as of
the unusual 6.6, 9.8, and 20 um features (possible planar C24) in the PN K
3-54. Although selection effects in the original samples of PNe observed with
Spitzer may play a potentially significant role in the statistics, we find that
the detection rate of fullerenes in C-rich PNe increases with decreasing
metallicity (5% in the Galaxy, 20% in the LMC, and 44% in the SMC). CLOUDY
photoionization modeling matches the observed IR fluxes with central stars that
display a rather narrow range in effective temperature (30,000-45,000 K),
suggesting a common evolutionary status of the objects and similar fullerene
formation conditions. The observed C60 intensity ratios in the Galactic sources
confirm our previous finding in the MCs that the fullerene emission is not
excited by the UV radiation from the central star. CLOUDY models also show that
line- and wind-blanketed model atmospheres can explain many of the observed
[NeIII]/[NeII] ratios by photoionization suggesting that possibly the UV
radiation from the central star, and not shocks, are triggering the
decomposition of the circumstellar dust grains. With the data at hand, we
suggest that the most likely explanation for the formation of fullerenes and
graphene precursors in PNe is that these molecular species are built from the
photo-chemical processing of a carbonaceous compound with a mixture of aromatic
and aliphatic structures similar to that of HAC dust.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (43 pages, 11 figures, and 4 tables).

Modeling and Optimization of Lactic Acid Synthesis by the Alkaline Degradation of Fructose in a Batch Reactor
The present work deals with the determination of the optimal operating conditions of lactic acid synthesis by the alkaline degradation of fructose. It is a complex transformation for which detailed knowledge is not available. It is carried out in a batch
or semi-batch reactor. The ‘‘Tendency Modeling’’ approach, which consists of the development of an approximate stoichiometric and kinetic model, has been used.
An experimental planning method has been utilized as the database for model development.
The application of the experimental planning methodology allows comparison between the experimental and model response. The model is then used in an optimization procedure to compute the optimal process. The optimal control problem is converted into a nonlinear programming problem solved using the sequencial quadratic programming procedure coupled with the golden search method. The strategy developed allows simultaneously optimizing the different variables, which may be constrained. The validity of the methodology is illustrated by the determination

Best Unbiased Estimates for the Microwave Background Anisotropies
It is likely that the observed distribution of the microwave background
temperature over the sky is only one realization of the underlying random
process associated with cosmological perturbations of quantum-mechanical
origin. If so, one needs to derive the parameters of the random process, as
accurately as possible, from the data of a single map. These parameters are of
the utmost importance, since our knowledge of them would help us to reconstruct
the dynamical evolution of the very early Universe. It appears that the lack of
ergodicity of a random process on a 2-sphere does not allow us to do this with
arbitrarily high accuracy. We are left with the problem of finding the best
unbiased estimators of the participating parameters. A detailed solution to
this problem is presented in this article. The theoretical error bars for the
