A detailed determination of the a priori mixing angles in non-leptonic decays of hyperons

    Get PDF
Non-leptonic Decays of Hyperons can provide a detailed determination of the a priori mixing angles that appear in physical hadrons in the approach in which non-perturbative flavor and parity violations are present in tiny pieces of the hadron mass operator. The determination of such angles in these decays will provide a bench mark to test their necessary universality-like property in other types of decays. Our main result is that the magnitudes of the a priori mixing angles can be determined quite accurately

Clinical trials (CT) in breast cancer have been crucial for new treatment discoveries. While participation in cancer CT is low, minorities are particularly underrepresented. This study aimed toidentify factors influencing the participation in CTs based on the experiences of Latina breast cancer survivors in Puerto Rico (PR), especially their CT knowledge, motivations, and concerns.Method:Focus groups (FG) were conducted by two social workers and the University of Puerto Rico/MD Anderson Community Health Educator. Participants were stratified into two subgroups: a) women with CT experience and b) those without CT experience. Seven FG were completed among breast cancer survivors (n=34) at two hospitals from the PR metropolitan area. Results: Our findings showed that participants expressed a basic knowledge and understanding of clinical trials. Motivations to participate included a desire to help others, non-monetary incentives to participation, self-benefits, readiness to participate based on the phases of illness, and enhanced relationships with the clinical trial recruitment team. Regardless of their previous experience with CTs, participants expressed concerns about participation including limited of knowledge about trial procedures and results, and lack of transportation, childcare, and support from family. Recommendations: The barriers and motivations identified for CT participation are modifiable and best targeted using a multidisciplinary approach.Social workers could play a potential role in participant recruitment and retention by clarifying research protocols to potential participants, as well as conducting CT. Our findings can help enhance capacity and training efforts for health professionals involved in CT recruitment and retention in culturally-relevant ways

In this study we clarify the taxonomic status and geographic distribution of Apalus cinctus (Pic, 1896), a Mediterranean species included in the group of Apalus bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1760). Apalus cinctus was only known from a few North African localities mentioned in the original description, and was considered of uncertain taxonomic status. The review of detailed photographs of the type specimen and the study of recently captured specimens allow us to discuss its taxonomic position and to define its diagnostic characters, validating its specific status. Capture or observation of specimens assignable to Apalus cinctus in continental Spain (León, Zamora and Huesca), extends the geographic range of the species considerably, including it within the European Fauna. We question the presence of Apalus bimaculatus in the Iberian peninsula and North Africa, suggesting that it is possibly replaced by A. cinctus.

Hydrogen production and degradation of ciprofloxacin by Ag@TiO2-MoS2 Photocatalysts

The photocatalytic activity of silver-based catalysts containing different amounts of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2; 5, 10 and 20 wt.%) was evaluated by the degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin and the production of hydrogen via water splitting. All the silver (Ag)-based catalysts degraded more than 70% of the antibiotic in 60 min. The catalyst that exhibited the best result was 5%Ag@TiO2-P25-5%MoS2, with ca. 91% of degradation. The control experiments and stability tests showed that photocatalysis was the degradation pathway and the selected silver-based catalysts were stable after seven cycles, with less than 2% loss of efficiency per cycle and less than 7% after seven cycles. The catalyst with the highest hydrogen production was 5%Ag@TiO2 NWs-20%MoS2, 1792 μmol/hg, at a wavelength of 400 nm. This amount was ca. 32 times greater than that obtained by the pristine titanium oxide nanowires catalyst. The enhancement was attributed to the high surface area of the catalysts, along with the synergism created by the silver nanoparticles and MoS2. All the catalysts were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)

A Priori Mixed Hadrons, Weak Radiative and Non-leptonic Decays of Hyperons

A priori mixings of eigenstates in physical states are quantum mechanical effects well known in several realms of physics. The possibility that such effects are also present in particle physics, in the form of flavor and parity mixings, is studied. Applications to weak radiative and non-leptonic decays of hyperons are discussed

First radial velocity results from the MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA)

The MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA) is a dedicated observatory of four 0.7m robotic telescopes fiber-fed to a KiwiSpec spectrograph. The MINERVA mission is to discover super-Earths in the habitable zones of nearby stars. This can be accomplished with MINERVA's unique combination of high precision and high cadence over long time periods. In this work, we detail changes to the MINERVA facility that have occurred since our previous paper. We then describe MINERVA's robotic control software, the process by which we perform 1D spectral extraction, and our forward modeling Doppler pipeline. In the process of improving our forward modeling procedure, we found that our spectrograph's intrinsic instrumental profile is stable for at least nine months. Because of that, we characterized our instrumental profile with a time-independent, cubic spline function based on the profile in the cross dispersion direction, with which we achieved a radial velocity precision similar to using a conventional "sum-of-Gaussians" instrumental profile: 1.8 m s1^{-1} over 1.5 months on the RV standard star HD 122064. Therefore, we conclude that the instrumental profile need not be perfectly accurate as long as it is stable. In addition, we observed 51 Peg and our results are consistent with the literature, confirming our spectrograph and Doppler pipeline are producing accurate and precise radial velocities.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PASP, Peer-Reviewed and Accepte

TOI-2046b, TOI-1181b, and TOI-1516b, three new hot Jupiters from TESS: planets orbiting a young star, a subgiant, and a normal star

We present the confirmation and characterization of three hot Jupiters, TOI-1181b, TOI-1516b, and TOI-2046b, discovered by the TESS space mission. The reported hot Jupiters have orbital periods between 1.4 and 2.05 d. The masses of the three planets are 1.18 ± 0.14 MJ, 3.16 ± 0.12 MJ, and 2.30 ± 0.28 MJ, for TOI-1181b, TOI-1516b, and TOI-2046b, respectively. The stellar host of TOI-1181b is a F9IV star, whereas TOI-1516b and TOI-2046b orbit F main sequence host stars. The ages of the first two systems are in the range of 2–5 Gyrs. However, TOI-2046 is among the few youngest known planetary systems hosting a hot Jupiter, with an age estimate of 100–400 Myrs. The main instruments used for the radial velocity follow-up of these three planets are located at Ondřejov, Tautenburg, and McDonald Observatory, and all three are mounted on 2–3 m aperture telescopes, demonstrating that mid-aperture telescope networks can play a substantial role in the follow-up of gas giants discovered by TESS and in the future by PLATO
