Influence of Fibre Reinforcement on the Long-Term Behaviour of Cracked Concrete
The influence of fibre reinforcement on the long-term behaviour of cracked concrete is analysed in this work by means of a creep test. Nine concrete mixes were prepared (7 SFRCs and 2 conventional RCs) based on two basic mix designs. Concretes type I were conceived for structural precast applications and concretes type II reproduce a general purpose. Fibre dosages and conventional reinforcements were varied to represent a wide spectrum of post-peak flexural responses. In all cases with fibre reinforcement steel fibres were used. Conventional RC specimens were reinforced with two steel rebars. In addition to the variables of mix design of concrete, there are two significant variables related to the creep test: the pre-crack opening level (CMODpn) and the stress level (Ic) sustained during the test. Creep tests were performed by applying a constant flexural load on notched pre-cracked specimens and controlling crack opening evolution. Some of the specimens developed a sudden increase of crack opening deformations during the creep test. Creep coefficients and Crack Opening Rates were calculated and analysed. Creep coefficients show significant dependence on the analysed variables. The results of this experimental campaign show that creep of SFRC specimens may be similar to a traditional RC
Performance enhancement of a GIS-based facility location problem using desktop grid infrastructure
This paper presents the integration of desktop grid infrastructure with GIS technologies, by proposing a parallel resolution method in a generic distributed environment. A case study focused on a discrete facility location problem, in the biomass area, exemplifies the high amount of computing resources (CPU, memory, HDD) required to solve the spatial problem. A comprehensive analysis is undertaken in order to analyse the behaviour of the grid-enabled GIS system. This analysis, consisting of a set of the experiments on the case study, concludes that the desktop grid infrastructure is able to use a commercial GIS system to solve the spatial problem achieving high speedup and computational resource utilization. Risk factors for exacerbations and pneumonia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a pooled analysis.
BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at risk of exacerbations and pneumonia; how the risk factors interact is unclear. METHODS: This post-hoc, pooled analysis included studies of COPD patients treated with inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)/long-acting β2 agonist (LABA) combinations and comparator arms of ICS, LABA, and/or placebo. Backward elimination via Cox's proportional hazards regression modelling evaluated which combination of risk factors best predicts time to first (a) pneumonia, and (b) moderate/severe COPD exacerbation. RESULTS: Five studies contributed: NCT01009463, NCT01017952, NCT00144911, NCT00115492, and NCT00268216. Low body mass index (BMI), exacerbation history, worsening lung function (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease [GOLD] stage), and ICS treatment were identified as factors increasing pneumonia risk. BMI was the only pneumonia risk factor influenced by ICS treatment, with ICS further increasing risk for those with BMI <25 kg/m2. The modelled probability of pneumonia varied between 3 and 12% during the first year. Higher exacerbation risk was associated with a history of exacerbations, poorer lung function (GOLD stage), female sex and absence of ICS treatment. The influence of the other exacerbation risk factors was not modified by ICS treatment. Modelled probabilities of an exacerbation varied between 31 and 82% during the first year. CONCLUSIONS: The probability of an exacerbation was considerably higher than for pneumonia. ICS reduced exacerbations but did not influence the effect of risks associated with prior exacerbation history, GOLD stage, or female sex. The only identified risk factor for ICS-induced pneumonia was BMI <25 kg/m2. Analyses of this type may help the development of COPD risk equations
Relación entre parámetros ultrasonográficos y edad gestacional en la gata doméstica
Different methods may be used for pregnancy diagnosis of the feline. Ultrasonography allows early diagnosis of pregnancy and gives information about embryo-fetus development. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between ultrasonographic measurements and gestational age. Ten mixed breed queens, aged between 24 and 36 month were used in the study. Pregnancies were confirmed by an ultrasonographic examination using an ultrasound scanner equipped with a 5-7.5-10 MHz linear transducer (Mindray™, DP- 6600 Vet) 20 days after the first mating. Females were daily monitored by ultrasonography since pregnancy diagnosis to parturition to recorded gestational sac and fetal measurements. During each ultrasound examination: 1) Gestacional sac volume; 2) Gestational sac diameter; 3) Crown-rump length; 4) Biparietal diameter; 5) Abdomen diameter were measured. A correlation between ultrasonographic measurements and gestational age was found with a linear regression analysis. All queens had a normal gestation and parturition. The correlation was significant (P<0.01) and with high coefficients of regression P<0.01. This study shows that ultrasonographic measurements could be used to estimate gestational age and predict parturition day in the queen.Existen diferentes métodos para el diagnóstico de la gestación en felinos, sin embargo el examen ultrasonográfico permite confirmar la preñez en forma temprana y brinda información sobre el desarrollo embrionario-fetal. El objetivo del trabajo fue relacionar diferentes parámetros ultrasonográficos con el día de gestación. Se utilizaron gatas (n=10) mestizas, de entre 24 y 36 meses de edad. El diagnóstico de gestación se realizó por ecografía 20 días posteriores al día del servicio. Se realizó un seguimiento ultrasonográfico (Ecógrafo Mindray, DP-6600 vet, sonda lineal multifrecuencia [5-7,5-10 MHz]) diario desde el día 21 postservicio hasta el parto. Se realizaron los siguientes registros ultrasonográficos: 1) Volumen del saco gestacional; 2) Diámetro medio del saco gestacional; 3) Longitud cráneo-caudal; 4) Diámetro biparietal; 5) Diámetro transverso abdominal del feto. Se realizó una correlación entre los parámetros evaluados con los días de gestación utilizando un análisis de regresión lineal. Todas las gatas presentaron una gestación normal. Pudo visualizarse una correlación entre los parámetros estudiados con los días de gestación, dicha correlación fue significativa (P<0.01) y con un alto coeficiente de regresión P<0.01. Estos hallazgos podrían utilizarse en la estimación de la edad gestacional y cálculo de la fecha probable de parto en la gata
Wanted dead or alive : high diversity of macroinvertebrates associated with living and ’dead’ Posidonia oceanica matte
The Mediterranean endemic seagrass Posidonia
oceanica forms beds characterised by a dense leaf canopy
and a thick root-rhizome ‘matte’. Death of P. oceanica
shoots leads to exposure of the underlying matte, which
can persist for many years, and is termed ‘dead’ matte.
Traditionally, dead matte has been regarded as a degraded
habitat. To test whether this assumption was
true, the motile macroinvertebrates of adjacent living
(with shoots) and dead (without shoots) matte of
P. oceanica were sampled in four different plots located
at the same depth (5–6 m) in Mellieha Bay, Malta
(central Mediterranean). The total number of species
and abundance were significantly higher (ANOVA;
P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively) in the dead matte
than in living P. oceanica matte, despite the presence of
the foliar canopy in the latter. Multivariate analysis
(MDS) clearly showed two main groups of assemblages,
corresponding to the two matte types. The amphipods
Leptocheirus guttatus and Maera grossimana, and the
polychaete Nereis rava contributed most to the dissimilarity
between the two different matte types. Several
unique properties of the dead matte contributing to the
unexpected higher number of species and abundance of
motile macroinvertebrates associated with this habitat
are discussed. The findings have important implications
for the conservation of bare P. oceanica matte, which
has been generally viewed as a habitat of low ecological

Non-thermal emission processes in massive binaries
In this paper, I present a general discussion of several astrophysical
processes likely to play a role in the production of non-thermal emission in
massive stars, with emphasis on massive binaries. Even though the discussion
will start in the radio domain where the non-thermal emission was first
detected, the census of physical processes involved in the non-thermal emission
from massive stars shows that many spectral domains are concerned, from the
radio to the very high energies.
First, the theoretical aspects of the non-thermal emission from early-type
stars will be addressed. The main topics that will be discussed are
respectively the physics of individual stellar winds and their interaction in
binary systems, the acceleration of relativistic electrons, the magnetic field
of massive stars, and finally the non-thermal emission processes relevant to
the case of massive stars. Second, this general qualitative discussion will be
followed by a more quantitative one, devoted to the most probable scenario
where non-thermal radio emitters are massive binaries. I will show how several
stellar, wind and orbital parameters can be combined in order to make some
semi-quantitative predictions on the high-energy counterpart to the non-thermal
emission detected in the radio domain.

Co-opetition models for governing professional football
In recent years, models for co-creating value in a business-to-business context have
often been examined with the aim of studying the strategies implemented by and
among organisations for competitive and co-operative purposes. The traditional
concepts of competition and co-operation between businesses have now evolved,
both in terms of the sector in which the businesses operate and in terms of the type
of goods they produce.
Many researchers have, in recent times, investigated the determinants that can
influence the way in which the model of co-opetition can be applied to the football
world. Research interest lies in the particular features of what makes a good football.
In this paper, the aim is to conduct an analysis of the rules governing the “football
system”, while also looking at the determinants of the demand function within
football entertainment. This entails applying to football match management the
co-opetition model, a recognised model that combines competition and co-operation
with the view of creating and distributing value. It can, therefore, be said that, for a
spectator, watching sport is an experience of high suspense, and this suspense, in turn,
depends upon the degree of uncertainty in the outcome. It follows that the rules
ensuring that both these elements can be satisfied are a fertile ground for co-operation
between clubs, as it is in the interest of all stakeholders to offer increasingly more
attractive football, in comparison with other competing products. Our end purpose is

Bisphenol A exposure in Mexico City and risk of prematurity: a pilot nested case control study
Abstract Background Presence of Bisphenol A (BPA) has been documented worldwide in a variety of human biological samples. There is growing evidence that low level BPA exposure may impact placental tissue development and thyroid function in humans. The aim of this present pilot study was to determine urinary concentrations of BPA during the last trimester of pregnancy among a small subset of women in Mexico City, Mexico and relate these concentrations to risk of delivering prematurely. Methods A nested case-control subset of 60 participants in the Early Life Exposure in Mexico to ENvironmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) study in Mexico City, Mexico were selected based on delivering less than or equal to 37 weeks of gestation and greater than 37 weeks of gestation. Third trimester archived spot urine samples were analyzed by online solid phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry. Results BPA was detected in 80.0% (N = 48) of the urine samples; total concentrations ranged from < 0.4 μg/L to 6.7 μg/L; uncorrected geometric mean was 1.52 μg/L. The adjusted odds ratio of delivering less than or equal to 37 weeks in relation to specific gravity adjusted third trimester BPA concentration was 1.91 (95%CI 0.93, 3.91, p-value = 0.08). When cases were further restricted to births occurring prior to the 37th week (n = 12), the odds ratio for specific-gravity adjusted BPA was larger and statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions This is the first study to document measurable levels of BPA in the urine of a population of Mexican women. Honey bee foraging distance depends on month and forage type
To investigate the distances at which honey bee foragers collect nectar and pollen, we analysed 5,484 decoded waggle dances made to natural forage sites to determine monthly foraging distance for each forage type. Firstly, we found significantly fewer overall dances made for pollen (16.8 %) than for non-pollen, presumably nectar (83.2 %; P < 2.2 × 10−23). When we analysed distance against month and forage type, there was a significant interaction between the two factors, which demonstrates that in some months, one forage type is collected at farther distances, but this would reverse in other months. Overall, these data suggest that distance, as a proxy for forage availability, is not significantly and consistently driven by need for one type of forage over the other
