    Interpretable Transformations with Encoder-Decoder Networks

    Deep feature spaces have the capacity to encode complex transformations of their input data. However, understanding the relative feature-space relationship between two transformed encoded images is difficult. For instance, what is the relative feature space relationship between two rotated images? What is decoded when we interpolate in feature space? Ideally, we want to disentangle confounding factors, such as pose, appearance, and illumination, from object identity. Disentangling these is difficult because they interact in very nonlinear ways. We propose a simple method to construct a deep feature space, with explicitly disentangled representations of several known transformations. A person or algorithm can then manipulate the disentangled representation, for example, to re-render an image with explicit control over parameterized degrees of freedom. The feature space is constructed using a transforming encoder-decoder network with a custom feature transform layer, acting on the hidden representations. We demonstrate the advantages of explicit disentangling on a variety of datasets and transformations, and as an aid for traditional tasks, such as classification.Comment: Accepted at ICCV 201

    Fibre Reinforced Geopolymers as Inorganic Strengthening Composites for Masonry Structures

    The study presents an assessment of externally bonded Fibre-Reinforced GeoPolymers (FRGPs) as strengthening material for masonry structures. Thanks to their tailored chemical and mechanical characteristics, geopolymer matrices can fulfil the restoration criteria for Built Heritage (BH) with the benefit of heat-resistant performances better than those of organic and inorganic matrices used in Externally Bonded Fibre Reinforced Polymers (EB-FRP) and Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) materials, respectively. This work is built on the outcomes of a previous investigation that proved the suitability of the developed geopolymer matrix for applications on clay bricks, revealing a good adhesion to masonry substrates and to embedded reinforcements. The behaviour of three FRGPs, including either a bi-directional basalt mesh, a bi-directional carbon mesh or a unidirectional Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) fabric, was explored by means of local tests on masonry sub-assemblages made of soft-mud clay bricks and hydraulic lime mortar. In overall, 9 single-lap shear tests on single bricks with a bonded length of 200 mm and 9 three-point bending tests on 2-brick slices, connected by a mortar joint and reinforced at the bottom face, were carried out. Lastly, the behaviour in alkaline environments of each reinforcement was investigated through tensile tests on coupons immersed for 28 days in alkaline solutions simulating the conditions of the geopolimeric matrices. Results confirmed the interesting potential of FRGPs for strengthening masonry elements, highlighting a good performance of steel and carbon reinforcements. On the other hand, precautions should be taken with basalt meshes that, as expected, were more sensitive to alkaline environment

    Influence of cellulose nanofibrils on the rheology, microstructure and strength of alkali activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag: a comparison with ordinary Portland cement

    This paper reports on the effect of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) on the fresh-state properties of alkali activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). Surface functionalized (oxidized) CNFs were added to alkali activated GGBS water suspensions (hydraulic pastes). The rheological behaviour of the pastes was compared with OPC and interpreted based on the CNF-mineral surface interaction, and on the CNF-water interaction and swelling. The water dispersion of CNFs with different surface functionalization degrees resulted in gels of different viscosity and yield stress, due to their different hydrophilicity and water adsorption properties. On increasing the CNFs surface oxidation degree, the viscosity of the CNF water dispersion decreases and the CNF water adsorption increases, while the viscosity of fresh pastes increases because of the reduced amount of available mixing water. In the hardened state, the hydraulic pastes show differences in mechanical strength related to the type and the amount of CNF influencing the porosity of the matrix as evidenced by the microstructural investigation performed by X-ray microtomography. The presence of higher amounts of CNFs induces the formation of porous agglomerates that may act as stress concentrators due to the swelling ability of nanofibrils

    Influence of Ageing Time and Method on Beef Quality and Safety

    The effectiveness of dry ageing with regard to retaining meat quality is still subject to debate. At 4 d post mortem, samples of boneless strip loins were excised from young Charolais carcasses and then stored for a further 26 d in a cooler, either vacuum-packaged (VP) or dried-aged (DA). Loin samples were also dissected 7 d post mortem as a control treatment (CT). Chemical, instrumental and microbiological data (n = 18) were determined in longissimus dorsi and underwent ANOVA to estimate the differences in the ageing fixed factor split into two orthogonal contrasts: control vs. aged and VP vs. DA. Ageing loss (both surface dehydration and water purge) was greater in DA compared to VP samples, resulting in the lowest moisture content and highest crude protein and fat percentage in DA loins. The ageing method did not affect meat surface colour, except for redness, which had the lowest value in DA samples. Meat tenderness improved a similar amount following both VP and DA ageing treatments. Compared to the control, prolonged ageing raised both the peroxide value and the total microbial count, especially in DA samples, though both remained within the recommended limits. In summation, both ageing methods improved beef meat tenderisation, preserving its shelf life

    On the appearance of Eisenstein series through degeneration

    Let Γ\Gamma be a Fuchsian group of the first kind acting on the hyperbolic upper half plane H\mathbb H, and let M=Γ\HM = \Gamma \backslash \mathbb H be the associated finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surface. If γ\gamma is parabolic, there is an associated (parabolic) Eisenstein series, which, by now, is a classical part of mathematical literature. If γ\gamma is hyperbolic, then, following ideas due to Kudla-Millson, there is a corresponding hyperbolic Eisenstein series. In this article, we study the limiting behavior of parabolic and hyperbolic Eisenstein series on a degenerating family of finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. In particular, we prove the following result. If γ∈Γ\gamma \in \Gamma corresponds to a degenerating hyperbolic element, then a multiple of the associated hyperbolic Eisenstein series converges to parabolic Eisenstein series on the limit surface.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures.     Subharmonic Behavior of Phospholipid-coated Ultrasound Contrast Agent Microbubbles

    Coated microbubbles, unlike tissue are able to scatter sound subharmonically. Therefore, the subharmonic behavior of coated microbubbles can be used to enhance the contrast in ultrasound contrast imaging. Theoretically, a threshold amplitude of the driving pressure can be calculated above which subharmonic oscillations of microbubbles are initiated. Interestingly, earlier experimental studies on coated microbubbles demonstrated that the threshold for these bubbles is much lower than predicted by the traditional linear viscoelastic shell models. This paper presents an experimental study on the subharmonic behavior of differently sized individual phospholipid coated microbubbles. The radial subharmonic response of the microbubbles was recorded with the Brandaris ultra high-speed camera as a function of both the amplitude and the frequency of the driving pulse. Threshold pressures for subharmonic generation as low as 5 kPa were found near a driving frequency equal to twice the resonance frequency of the bubble. An explanation for this low threshold pressure is provided by the shell buckling model proposed by Marmottant et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 118, 3499–3505 (2005)]. It is shown that the change in the elasticity of the bubble shell as a function of bubble radius as proposed in this model, enhances the subharmonic behavior of the microbubbles
