Residual thermal and moisture influences on the strain energy release rate analysis of edge delamination

A laminated plate theory analysis is developed to calculate the strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination growth in a composite laminate. The analysis includes the contribution of residual thermal and moisture stresses to the strain energy released. The strain energy release rate, G, increased when residual thermal effects were combined with applied mechanical strains, but then decreased when increasing moisture content was included. A quasi-three-dimensional finite element analysis indicated identical trends and demonstrated these same trends for the individual strain energy release rate components, G sub I and G sub II, associated with interlaminar tension and shear. An experimental study indicated that for T300/5208 graphite-epoxy composites, the inclusion of residual thermal and moisture stresses did not significantly alter the calculation of interlaminar fracture toughness from strain energy release rate analysis of edge delamination data taken at room temperature, ambient conditions

Intraracial and Intraethnic Microagressions Experienced by Korean American Internationally and Transracially Adopted Persons

This research examined the typology of microaggressions (i.e., everyday slights and derogations) that Korean American internationally and transracially adopted individuals (ITAPs) report based on intraracial and intraethnic interpersonal exchanges. Although the microaggressions framework has been used to analyze more covert prejudicial interracial slights, it has not yet been explored from an intraracial lens. Transcripts from two separate focus groups with 4 young adult Korean American ITAPs (2 males and 2 females per group) were analyzed. Focus groups were completed using Skype. Thematic analysis was employed to discover 15 distinct subthemes organized under 6 overarching themes: (1) Cultural Scripts; (2) Relationships; (3) Assumptions of Identity; (4) Contextual Microaggressions; (5) Instruction; and, (6) Adoption-Specific Microaggressions. Themes revolved around expectations of culturally valued behavior, ignorance of adoption, and cultural societal definitions of identity. Implications for practice and theory are provided

Quantifying Physical Activity in Young Children Using a Three-Dimensional Camera

The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and validity of using three-dimensional (3D) video data and computer vision to estimate physical activity intensities in young children. Families with children (2–5-years-old) were invited to participate in semi-structured 20-minute play sessions that included a range of indoor play activities. During the play session, children’s physical activity (PA) was recorded using a 3D camera. PA video data were analyzed via direct observation, and 3D PA video data were processed and converted into triaxial PA accelerations using computer vision. PA video data from children (n = 10) were analyzed using direct observation as the ground truth, and the Receiver Operating Characteristic Area Under the Curve (AUC) was calculated in order to determine the classification accuracy of a Classification and Regression Tree (CART) algorithm for estimating PA intensity from video data. A CART algorithm accurately estimated the proportion of time that children spent sedentary (AUC = 0.89) in light PA (AUC = 0.87) and moderate-vigorous PA (AUC = 0.92) during the play session, and there were no significant differences (p \u3e 0.05) between the directly observed and CART-determined proportions of time spent in each activity intensity. A computer vision algorithm and 3D camera can be used to estimate the proportion of time that children spend in all activity intensities indoors
