The difficulties faced by school administrators working in disadvantaged schools and the effects of the administrator role they exhibit on the success of teachers and students

The aim of this study is to identify the difficulties faced by school principals working in disadvantaged schools in order to raise students with 21st century skills and to ensure the continuity of school success, and to examine the effect of the role of school principal on teacher and student success. The study group includes 10 school principals from primary schools located in disadvantaged regions of Istanbul. In the study, a phenomenological qualitative research design was used and the snowball sampling method, a purposeful sampling method, was employed. In order to achieve the aim of the study, participants were asked the following questions: 1. What kind of problems do you encounter in your school? 2. What methods do you use to deal with the problems? 3. How do you support your teachers who cannot cope with their problems? 4.How do you support troubled students to cope with their problems? Through the study, several problems faced by the principals emerged: financial constraints, lack of commitment to the school, socio-economic structure of the school environment, and the socio-cultural structure of the school environment. The study also shows that to address these problems, school principals lead teachers' professional knowledge by displaying "correct communication", "resilience", "flexibility and positive thinking", and they try to create a positive school climate. In addition, it was determined that principals’ approach problematic students caringly, gaining their trust and trying to find solutions to their problems. Such an approach creates positive changes in teachers’ and students' attitudes and behaviors toward the school and increases academic success. The main finding in this study is that school principals' experiences in dealing with difficulties can be a guide to other colleagues in how to deal with difficulties

Effect of UV radiation by projectors on 3D printing

Polymers that solidify under light radiation are commonly used in digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. A wide range of photopolymers use photoinitiators that react to radiation in range of ultraviolet (UV) wavelength. In the present study we provided measurement of radiant fluence in the UV wavelength range from 280 nm to 400 nm for two data projectors and compared effect of radiation on quality of 3D printing. One projector is commonly used DLP projector with high energy lamp. Second one is an industrial projector, in which RGB light emitting diodes (LEDs) are replaced by UV LEDs with wattage at the level of 3.6 % of the first one. Achieved data confirmed uneven distribution of radiant energy on illuminated area. These results validate, that undesired heating light causes internal stress inside built models that causes defects in final products. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017

La formation des enseignants : entre savoirs et pratiques de terrain

En ce début de deuxième mandat, le Président annonce une nouvelle étape de sa réforme de l’enseignement supérieur qui doit être votée début juillet en session spéciale du parlement. Les écoles vétérinaires vont être fermées. Elles coûtent trop cher et ne sont guère utiles. Les étudiants intègreront à l’université des masters généralistes de biologie, sans formation pratique spécifique. C’est à l’issue du concours qu’ils se formeront sur le tas. Le dit « concours » étant une « aberration » française qui n’existe nulle part ailleurs dans l’Union Européenne, il disparaîtra d’ici 2 ans. Les Préfets auront la charge de délivrer aux étudiants titulaires d’un master l’habilitation à l’exercice de la médecine vétérinaire.Les amis des animaux crient au scandale. Les journalistes multiplient reportages et articles. Interviewé par Jean-Pierre P. et Laurence F., l’acteur Jean-Paul B. apparaît en pleurs au journal de 20 heures : « qui va soigner Kiki ? ». Christine B. fonde « l’association pour la défense de la qualité des soins pour les chiwawas ». Forte de 500 000 membres dès le deuxième jour, elle entame le siège de l’Hôtel Matignon. L’association de « défense des meutes et de la chasse à courre » envahit les jardins de l’Elysée et reçoit le soutien des cavaliers de la garde républicaine. Apercevant le Président, elle lance le hallali. Le drame est évité par le passage inopiné d’un renard qui détourne la meute...A l’appel des amis des chiens, chats et autres nouveaux animaux de compagnie, les manifestations se multiplient. Sous la pression de la rue, le gouvernement démissionne et le président est contraint à l’exil, en Chine, seul pays prêt à l’accueillir à la demande de la corporation des cuisiniers spécialistes en ragoût de Saint Bernard.Suivant la volonté du peuple, le parlement fait l’éloge des écoles vétérinaires : la qualité de leur travail est justement réaffirmée, ainsi que la nécessité d’une formation pratique des vétérinaires.Un jeune député se risque alors à proposer le rétablissement de la formation pratique des enseignants, qui avait disparu dans l’indifférence générale deux ans plus tôt...Sommes-nous vraiment dans la politique fiction, à supposer que l’incertitude sur la santé de nos animaux de compagnie provoquerait plus d’émotion que l’avenir de nos enfants ?Force est de constater que la réforme dite de « mastérisation » se présente comme la chronique d’une catastrophe annoncée. Le problème n’est pas du tout la disparition des IUFM en tant qu’instituts autonomes, pas plus que leur intégration à l’université. La formation des enseignants peut se faire dans les universités, en gardant et même en améliorant ce qui se faisait dans les IUFM. Le problème vient de l’enfumage gouvernemental autour de cette réforme.Madame Valérie Pécresse met en avant que les futurs professeurs des écoles, comme les certifiés, auront maintenant un niveau bac +5. C’est «oublier» que c’est déjà le cas! La réforme impose également aux universités que les mêmes masters accueillent « étudiants chercheurs » et « étudiants concours ». À court terme, c’est le meilleur moyen de casser la recherche universitaire et de tuer en même temps le service public qu’est l’éducation nationale. On serait tenté de crier à l’incompétence, mais il semble que nous soyons plutôt face à plan idéologique subtilement préparé.Espérons simplement que les six mois à venir susciteront une prise de conscience et un intérêt tant médiatique que populaire permettant de revenir sur une base aussi simple que saine : « Enseigner est un métier qui s’apprend ! »Le dossier qui suit le rappelle autour de quelques points essentiels.Avant de laisser la parole à Maryvette Balcou-Debussche pour la présentation de ce numéro, je tiens à remercier Philippe Guillot et René Dubois qui, fidèles à Expressions, nous ont apporté une aide précieuse.Un prochain numéro va suivre avant la fin de l’année universitaire, sous la direction de Dominique Tournès. C’est ainsi que l’IREM sera géré par une équipe du Laboratoire d’informatique et de mathématiques de l’université, dénommée EREDIM (Équipe Réunionnaise d’Épistémologie et de Didactique de l’Informatique et des Mathématiques). Réunissant sept chercheurs travaillant sur des problématiques liées à l’enseignement des mathématiques et à l’utilisation des TICE, la nouvelle équipe servira notamment de support aux futurs masters habilités pour la formation des enseignants et aux doctorats qui s’ensuivront.Souhaitons simplement qu’il ne s’agira pas du dernier numéro d’Expressions, revue de l’IUFM, école interne de l’Université de La Réunion

Roles of estrogen receptor-alpha in mediating life span: the hypothalamic deregulation hypothesis.

In several species caloric restriction (CR) extends life span. In this paper we integrate data from studies on CR and other sources to articulate the hypothalamic deregulation hypothesis by which estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-α) signaling in the hypothalamus and limbic system affects life span under the stress of CR in mammals. ER-α is one of two principal estrogen-binding receptors differentially expressed in the amygdala, hippocampus, and several key hypothalamic nuclei: the arcuate nucleus (ARN), preoptic area (POA), ventromedial nucleus (VMN), antero ventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV), paraventricular nucleus (PVN), supraoptic nucleus (SON), and suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Estradiol signaling via ER-α is essential in basal level functioning of reproductive cycle, sexually receptive behaviors, physiological stress responses, as well as sleep cycle, and other nonsexual behaviors. When an organism is placed under long-term CR, which introduces an external stress to this ER-α signaling, the reduction of ER-α expression is attenuated over time in the hypothalamus. Model of unidirectional block formation leading to reentrant ventricular tachycardia in the infarct border zone of postinfarction canine hearts

AbstractBackgroundWhen the infarct border zone is stimulated prematurely, a unidirectional block line (UBL) can form and lead to double-loop (figure-of-eight) reentrant ventricular tachycardia (VT) with a central isthmus. The isthmus is composed of an entrance, center, and exit. It was hypothesized that for certain stimulus site locations and coupling intervals, the UBL would coincide with the isthmus entrance boundary, where infarct border zone thickness changes from thin-to-thick in the travel direction of the premature stimulus wavefront.MethodA quantitative model was developed to describe how thin-to-thick changes in the border zone result in critically convex wavefront curvature leading to conduction block, which is dependent upon coupling interval. The model was tested in 12 retrospectively analyzed postinfarction canine experiments. Electrical activation was mapped for premature stimulation and for the first reentrant VT cycle. The relationship of functional conduction block forming during premature stimulation to functional block during reentrant VT was quantified.ResultsFor an appropriately placed stimulus, in accord with model predictions: 1. The UBL and reentrant VT isthmus lateral boundaries overlapped (error: 4.8±5.7mm). 2. The UBL leading edge coincided with the distal isthmus where the center-entrance boundary would be expected to occur. 3. The mean coupling interval was 164.6±11.0ms during premature stimulation and 190.7±20.4ms during the first reentrant VT cycle, in accord with model calculations, which resulted in critically convex wavefront curvature and functional conduction block, respectively, at the location of the isthmus entrance boundary and at the lateral isthmus edges.DiscussionReentrant VT onset following premature stimulation can be explained by the presence of critically convex wavefront curvature and unidirectional block at the isthmus entrance boundary when the premature stimulation interval is sufficiently short. The double-loop reentrant circuit pattern is a consequence of wavefront bifurcation around this UBL followed by coalescence, and then impulse propagation through the isthmus. The wavefront is blocked from propagating laterally away from the isthmus by sharp increases in border zone thickness, which results in critically convex wavefront curvature at VT cycle lengths

Identification of Dynamic Systems Using Bayesian Networks

Cílem této práce je vytvoření spojení mezi Bayesovskými sítěmi a parametrickou identifikací dynamických systémů. Nejprvé byl zpracován průzkum dostupné literatury a byly zformulovány důležité teoretické základy. Poté jsou uvedeny modely dynamických systémů na bázi Bayesovských sítí. Těžištěm práce je návrh a ověření metodologie identifikace dynamických systémů pomocí Bayesovských sítí. Součástí metodologie je nový přístup k volbě řádu výsledného modelu. Na závěr, byla ověřena navržená metoda identifikace dynamických systémů pomocí Bayesovských sítí na fyzikálních modelech dynamických systémů.Obecně je možno konstatovat, že je disertační práce zaměřena na návrh nového přístupu k identifikaci dynamických systémů ovlivněných šumem. Uvedené modely dynamických systémů na bázi Bayesovských sítí mohou být také využité k estimaci stavu, sledování a řízení dynamických systémů.The aim of this thesis is to provide the bridging between Bayesian networks and system identification. Firstly, the literature review and necessary theoretical prerequisites are provided. Secondly, Bayesian network based models of dynamic systems are introduced. Next, the methodology of Bayesian network based system identification is proposed and explored on simulated datasets. In addition, a new approach to the order selection for a resulting model is proposed and verified. Finally, the proposed Bayesian network based system identification approach is verified on real dynamic systems.Overally, the thesis proposes a new approach to system identification of dynamic systems influenced by noisy signals. In addition, Bayesian network based models proposed in this thesis can be used for state estimation, monitoring and control of dynamic systems
