Invertibility of multiple random functions and its application to symmetric ciphers
The invertibility of a random function (IRF, in short) is an important problem and has wide applications in cryptography. For ex- ample, searching a preimage of Hash functions, recovering a key of block ciphers under the known-plaintext-attack model, solving discrete loga- rithms over a prime field with large prime, and so on, can be viewed as its instances. In this work we describe the invertibility of multiple random functions (IMRF, in short), which is a generalization of the IRF. In order to solve the IMRF, we generalize the birthday theorem. Based on the generalized birthday theorem and time-memory tradeoff (TMTO, in short) method, we present an efficient TMTO method of solving an IMRF, which can be viewed as a generalization of three main TMTO attacks, that is, Hellmanās attack, Biryukov and Shamirās attack with BSW sampling, and Biryukov, Mukhopadhyay and Sarkarās time- memory-key tradeoff attack. Our method is highly parallel and suitable for distributed computing environments. As a generalization of Hellmanās attack, our method overcomes its shortcoming of using only one pair of known plaintext and ciphertext and first admits more than one datum in a TMTO on block ciphers at the single key scenario. As a generaliza- tion of Biryukov and Shamirās attack with BSW sampling, our method overcomes its shortcoming of using only a few data with specific prefix in stream ciphers and can utilize all data without any waste. As appli- cations, we get two new tradeoff curves: N2 = TM2D3, N = PD and D=Ļforblockciphers,andN2 =Ļ3TM2D2,N=ĻPDandDā„Ļ for stream ciphers, where Ļ is the number of random functions, that is, the number of independent computing units available to an attacker, N is the size of key space (for block ciphers) or state (for stream ci- phers) space, D the number of data captured by the attacker, and T, M, P the time/memory/precomputation cost consumed at each computing unit respectively. As examples, assume that 4096 computing units can be available for the attacker. Denote by 5-tuple (Ļ, T, M, D, P ) the costof our method. Chemical ordering suppresses large-scale electronic phase separation in doped manganites
For strongly correlated oxides, it has been a long-standing issue regarding the role of the chemical ordering of the dopants on the physical properties. Here, using unit cell by unit cell superlattice growth technique, we determine the role of chemical ordering of the Pr dopant in a colossal magnetoresistant (La1-yPry)1-xCaxMnO3 (LPCMO) system, which has been well known for its large length-scale electronic phase separation phenomena. Our experimental results show that the chemical ordering of Pr leads to marked reduction of the length scale of electronic phase separations. Moreover, compared with the conventional Pr-disordered LPCMO system, the Pr-ordered LPCMO system has a metalāinsulator transition that is ~100 K higher because the ferromagnetic metallic phase is more dominant at all temperatures below the Curie temperature
High-level expression and purification of soluble recombinant FGF21 protein by SUMO fusion in Escherichia coli
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a promising drug candidate to combat metabolic diseases. However, high-level expression and purification of recombinant FGF21 (rFGF21) in <it>Escherichia coli (E. coli) </it>is difficult because rFGF21 forms inclusion bodies in the bacteria making it difficult to purify and obtain high concentrations of bioactive rFGF21. To overcome this problem, we fused the <it>FGF21 </it>with <it>SUMO </it>(Small ubiquitin-related modifier) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and expressed the fused gene in <it>E. coli </it>BL21(DE3).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>By inducing with IPTG, SUMO-FGF21 was expressed at a high level. Its concentration reached 30% of total protein, and exceeded 95% of all soluble proteins. The fused protein was purified by DEAE sepharose FF and Ni-NTA affinity chromatography. Once cleaved by the SUMO protease, the purity of rFGF21 by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was shown to be higher than 96% with low endotoxin level (<1.0 EU/ml). The results of <it>in vivo </it>animal experiments showed that rFGF21 produced by using this method, could decrease the concentration of plasma glucose in diabetic rats by streptozotocin (STZ) injection.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study demonstrated that SUMO, when fused with FGF21, was able to promote its soluble expression of the latter in <it>E. coli</it>, making it more convenient to purify rFGF21 than previously. This may be a better method to produce rFGF21 for pharmaceutical research and development.</p
Posterior Circulation Mechanical Thrombectomy through Primitive Trigeminal Artery: A Case Report
Introduction: Primitive trigeminal artery (PTA) is a rare intracranial vascular malformation, and mechanical thrombectomy and revascularization via PTA are rarely reported. Case Presentation: We reported a case of mechanical thrombectomy through PTA in a patient who presented with sudden slurred speech and had a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of 12. Digital subtraction angiography of the cerebral vasculature showed PTA formation in the right internal carotid artery cavernous segment, with acute occlusion of the distal basilar artery at the PTA junction, and bilateral vertebral arteries and proximal basilar artery were underdeveloped. Therefore, we chose mechanical thrombectomy via PTA, but unfortunately, the vessel failed to recanalize. Follow-up at 1-month post-procedure indicated that the patient had passed away. We present the endovascular process and analyze and summarize the reasons for the failure to provide a reference for subsequent mechanical thrombectomy via PTA. Conclusions: PTA increases the risk of ischemic stroke and adds to the complexity of mechanical thrombectomy post-stroke. However, in certain situations, PTA can be used as a thrombectomy channel to increase the first-line possibility of timely endovascular treatment to save ischemic brain tissue
Presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in esophagus and its association with the clinicopathological characteristics and survival in patients with esophageal cancer
BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests a causal relationship between specific bacterial infections and the development of certain malignancies. However, the possible role of the keystone periodontal pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis, in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unknown. Therefore, we examined the presence of P. gingivalis in esophageal mucosa, and the relationship between P. gingivalis infection and the diagnosis and prognosis of ESCC. METHODS: The presence of P. gingivalis in the esophageal tissues from ESCC patients and normal controls was examined by immunohistochemistry using antibodies targeting whole bacteria and its unique secreted protease, the gingipain Kgp. qRT-PCR was used as a confirmatory approach to detect P. gingivalis 16S rDNA. Clinicopathologic characteristics were collected to analyze the relationship between P. gingivalis infection and development of ESCC. RESULTS: P. gingivalis was detected immunohistochemically in 61Ā % of cancerous tissues, 12Ā % of adjacent tissues and was undetected in normal esophageal mucosa. A similar distribution of lysine-specific gingipain, a catalytic endoprotease uniquely secreted by P. gingivalis, and P. gingivalis 16S rDNA was also observed. Moreover, statistic correlations showed P. gingivalis infection was positively associated with multiple clinicopathologic characteristics, including differentiation status, metastasis, and overall survival rate. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate for the first time that P. gingivalis infects the epithelium of the esophagus of ESCC patients, establish an association between infection with P. gingivalis and the progression of ESCC, and suggest P. gingivalis infection could be a biomarker for this disease. More importantly, these data, if confirmed, indicate that eradication of a common oral pathogen could potentially contribute to a reduction in the overall ESCC burden. Glassy State Lead Tellurite Nanobelts: Synthesis and Properties
The lead tellurite nanobelts have been first synthesized in the composite molten salts (KNO3/LiNO3) method, which is cost-effective, one-step, easy to control, and performed at low-temperature and in ambient atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrum, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and FT-IR spectrum are used to characterize the structure, morphology, and composition of the samples. The results show that the as-synthesized products are amorphous and glassy nanobelts with widths of 200ā300 nm and lengths up to tens of microns and the atomic ratio of Pb:Te:O is close to 1:1.5:4. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and investigations of the corresponding structure and morphology change confirm that the nanobelts have low glass transition temperature and thermal stability. Optical diffuse reflectance spectrum indicates that the lead tellurite nanobelts have two optical gaps at ca. 3.72 eV and 4.12 eV. Epidemiology of invasive group B streptococcal disease in infants from urban area of South China, 2011ā2014
YesBackground: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in infants in both
developed and developing countries. To our knowledge, only a few studies have been reported the clinical
features, treatment and outcomes of the GBS disease in China. The severity of neonatal GBS disease in China
remains unclear. Population-based surveillance in China is therefore required.
Methods: We retrospectively collected data of <3 months old infants with culture-positive GBS in sterile samples
from three large urban tertiary hospitals in South China from Jan 2011 to Dec 2014. The GBS isolates and their
antibiotic susceptibility were routinely identified in clinical laboratories in participating hospitals. Serotyping and
multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) were also conducted for further analysis of the neonatal GBS disease.
Results: Total 70 cases of culture-confirmed invasive GBS infection were identified from 127,206 live births born in
studying hospitals, giving an overall incidence of 0.55 per 1000 live births (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.44ā0.69).
They consisted of 49 with early-onset disease (EOD, 0.39 per 1000 live births (95% CI 0.29ā0.51)) and 21 with
late-onset disease (LOD, 0.17 per 1000 live births (95% CI 0.11ā0.25)). The incidence of EOD increased significantly over
the studying period. Five infants (4 EOD and 1 LOD) died before discharge giving a mortality rate of 7.1% and five
infants (7.1%, 2 EOD and 3 LOD) had neurological sequelae. Within 68 GBS isolates from GBS cases who born in the
studying hospitals or elsewhere, serotype III accounted for 77.9%, followed by Ib (14.7%), V (4.4%), and Ia (2.9%). MLST
analysis revealed the presence of 13 different sequence types among the 68 GBS isolates and ST-17 was the most
frequent sequence type (63.2%). All isolates were susceptible to penicillin, ceftriaxone, vancomycin and linezolid, while
57.4% and 51.5% were resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin, respectively.
Conclusions: This study gains the insight into the spectrum of GBS infection in south China which will facilitate the
development of the guidance for reasonable antibiotics usage and will provide evidence for the implementation of
