    Extractive Conversation Summarization Driven by Textual Entailment Prediction

    Summarizing conversations like meetings, email threads or discussion forums poses relevant challenges on how to model the dialogue structure. Existing approaches mainly focus on premise-claim entailment relationships while neglecting contrasting or uncertain assertions. Furthermore, existing techniques are abstractive, thus requiring a training set consisting of humanly generated summaries. With the twofold aim of enriching the dialogue representation and addressing conversation summarization in the absence of training data, we present an extractive conversation summarization pipeline. We explore the use of contradictions and neutral premise-claim relations, both in the same document or in different documents. The results achieved on four datasets covering different domains show that applying unsupervised methods on top of a refined premise-claim selection achieves competitive performance in most domains

    DANTE at GeoLingIt: Dialect-Aware Multi-Granularity Pre-training for Locating Tweets within Italy

    This paper presents an NLP research system designed to geolocate tweets within Italy, a country renowned for its diverse linguistic landscape. Our methodology consists of a two-step process involving pre-training and fine-tuning phases. In the pre-training step, we take a semi-supervised approach and introduce two additional tasks. The primary objective of these tasks is to provide the language model with comprehensive knowledge of language varieties, focusing on both the sentence and token levels. Subsequently, during the fine-tuning phase, the model is adapted explicitly for two subtasks: coarse- and fine-grained variety geolocation. To evaluate the effectiveness of our methodology, we participate in the GeoLingIt 2023 shared task and assess our model’s performance using standard metrics.     Geophysical measurements for site response investigation : preliminary results on the island of Malta

    The main goal of this study is to investigate the dynamic properties of main lithotypes outcropping on the island of Malta and to evaluate the general features of the local seismic response through the combined use of geophysical methods based on Rayleigh waves and horizontal to vertical noise spectral ratios. These kind of studies have unfortunately never been undertaken in Malta and, therefore, no shear wave velocity values and fundamental frequency of outcropping lithotypes have been published. The proposed preliminary results represent a valid set of data useful for evaluating seismic hazard and risk for the Maltese islands. Even if the seismic activity around the archipelago is generally of low to moderate magnitude the islands in the past were struck by large events in Sicily and the Hellenic arc resulting in considerable damage.peer-reviewe

    Towards specific T–H relationships: FRIBAS database for better characterization of RC and URM buildings

    FRIBAS database is an open access database (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6505442) composed of the characteristics of 312 buildings (71 masonry, 237 reinforced concrete and 4 mixed types). It collects and harmonizes data from different surveys performed on buildings in the Basilicata and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions (Southern and Northeastern Italy, respectively). Each building is defined by 37 parameters related to the building and foundation soil characteristics. The building and soil fundamental periods were experimentally estimated based on ambient noise measurements. FRIBAS gave us the opportunity to study the influence of the main characteristics of buildings and the soil-building interaction effect to their structural response. In this study, we have used the FRIBAS dataset to investigate how the building period varies as a function of construction materials and soil types. Our results motivate the need of going beyond a ‘one-fits-all’ numerical period–height (T–H) relationship for generic building typologies provided by seismic codes, towards specific T–H relationships that account for both soil and building typologies

    Site Amplifications in the epicentral area of the 2016, M 6, Amatrice earthquake (Italy)

    The first mainshock (Mw 6.0) of the 2016 Central Italy seismic sequence, severely struck the Amatrice village and the surrounding localities. After a few days, some Italian Institutions, coordinated by the “Center for Seismic Microzonation and its applications”, carried out several preparatory activities for seismic microzonation of the area. A temporary seismic network was installed that monitored about 50 sites in epicentral area. The network produced a huge amount of records in a wide range of magnitude up to Mw 6.5. For about half of the recording stations, detailed site characterization was undertaken, encompassing single station noise measurements and S-wave velocity profiles. The geological and geophysical data together with the collected dataset of seismic signals were exploited to investigate the site response of selected stations.     Temporary dense seismic network during the 2016 Central Italy seismic emergency for microzonation studies

    In August 2016, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Central Italy, starting a devastating seismic sequence, aggravated by other two events of magnitude 5.9 and 6.5, respectively. After the first mainshock, four Italian institutions installed a dense temporary network of 50 seismic stations in an area of 260 km2. The network was registered in the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks with the code 3A and quoted with a Digital Object Identifier ( https://doi.org/10.13127/SD/ku7Xm12Yy9 ). Raw data were converted into the standard binary miniSEED format, and organized in a structured archive. Then, data quality and completeness were checked, and all the relevant information was used for creating the metadata volumes. Finally, the 99 Gb of continuous seismic data and metadata were uploaded into the INGV node of the European Integrated Data Archive repository. Their use was regulated by a Memorandum of Understanding between the institutions. After an embargo period, the data are now available for many different seismological studies.Publishedid 1825T.     The agricultural use of good quality sludge represents a value-added route to ensure growth sustainability in Europe, where raw material availability, for example, for phosphorus, is insufficient to meet demand. However, the possible presence of pathogens, pharmaceuticals and heavy metals requires specific regulations to minimize sludge-related health issues and environmental risks. The current regulation on sludge agricultural use applied by many EU countries is here presented and compared, highlighting scarce harmonization of the legislative framework among Member States. Actual issues, such as the fate of emerging micropollutants and microplastics in sludge-amended soils, and public health concerns regarding sludge spreading during the COVID-19 epidemic, are considered, too

    Different damage observed in the villages of Pescara del Tronto and Vezzano after the M6.0 August 24, 2016 central Italy earthquake and site effects analysis

    The authors have surveyed many damaged villages located at the epicentre of the ML=6.0 earthquake which occurred on August 24, 2016 in central Italy. Some unexpected anomalies were discovered such as very different levels of damage in Vezzano and Pescara del Tronto villages (Arquata del Tronto Municipality, Ascoli Piceno province). The two villages are situated just 1300 meters from each other. Pescara del Tronto suffered very heavy damage with many masonry building collapses and 48 fatalities, while Vezzano suffered only light damage to few buildings. This paper provides a preliminar analysis from an engineering and geophysics perspective. Particularly, rapid visual surveys were carried out in the two villages in order to detect possible significant differences in the vulnerability of their building stocks and site geophysical investigations were performed to detect possible local amplification effects
