Annotating Musical Theatre Plots on Narrative Structure and Emotional Content

    Get PDF
Although theoretical models of the structure of narrative arising from systematic analysis of corpora are available for domains such as Russian folk tales, there are no such sources for the plot lines of musical theatre. The present paper reports an effort of knowledge elicitation for features that characterise the narrative structure of plot in the particular domain of musical theatre. The following aspects are covered: identification of a valid vocabulary of abstract units to use in annotating musical theatre plots, development of a procedure for annotation - including a spread-sheet format for annotators to use, and a corresponding set of instructions to guide them through the process - selection of a corpus of musical theatre pieces that would constitute the corpus to be annotated, the annotation process itself and the results of post-processing the annotated corpus in search for insights on the narrative structure of musical theatre plots

National Panasonic (U.K.) Ltd. v. Commission of the European Communities: The Common Market\u27s First Look at Warrantless Searches in Antitrust Investigations

In Antitrust Investigations National Panasonic (UK) Ltd v. Commission of the European Communities\u27 is the first decision of the European Court of Justice delineating the powers of the European Commission to conduct evidentiary searches on the premises of firms suspected of violating the European Economic Community\u27s antitrust laws. The Court held that the Commission may conduct on-the-spot searches of firms without prior notification. The Court\u27s decision greatly expands the investigatory powers of the Commission at the expense of significant privacy and due process rights for firms operating within the European Community. This note will examine the extent to which the Court\u27s decision departs from both the language and intent of the Community\u27s statutory grant of investigatory powers to the Commission, and will explore safeguards that the Community\u27s legislative authorities should introduce to protect a firm\u27s rights while affording the Commission maximum discretionary power

The role of self-management practices as mechanisms for re-establishing normality in cancer survivors

This article explores the relationship between cancer survivors’ use of self-management practices and their search for normality. Using Frank’s illness narratives and other theoretical literature on normality in chronic illness, it draws on findings from a qualitative study to explore different ways cancer survivors use self-management practices to re-establish normality in their lives post-cancer. The findings suggest that “normality” represents different things to cancer survivors. We suggest that normality in survivorship is not a static concept but is fluid, and at certain times, cancer survivors may display some or all of these different versions of normality. The findings show that self-management practices can help cancer survivors experiment with different health and lifestyle processes to help support their “normal” daily lifestyle activities, quality of life, and well-being. </jats:p
