A learning progression based teaching module on the causes of seasons

In this paper, we report about designing and validating a teaching learning module based on a learning progression and focused on the causes of seasons. An initial learning progression about the Celestial Motion big idea —causes of seasons, lunar and solar eclipse and Moon phases— was developed and validated. Existing curricula, research studies on alternative conceptions about these phenomena, and students’ answers to an open questionnaire were the starting point to develop initial learning progressions; then, a two-tier multiple-choice questionnaire was designed to validate and improve it. The questionnaire was submitted to about 300 secondary-school students whose answers were used to revise the hypothesized learning progressions. This improved version of the learning progression was used to design a module focused on the causes of seasons in which students were engaged in quantitative measurements with a photovoltaic panel to explain changes of the Sun rays’ flow on the Earth’s surface over the year. The efficacy of our module in improving students’ understanding of the phenomenon of the seasons was tested using our questionnaire as pre- and post-test

Investigating the Presentation, Trajectory, and Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Children Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence

Childhood exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) is serious public health issue associated with a host of negative outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research on early-life violence exposure has found that it confers risk for further exposure to violence and poor mental health later in life; however, there is a lack of prospective research in this area. Further, there is little information on how treatment impacts mental health over the long-term, despite the chronic nature of IPV exposure. This dissertation has three specific aims: (1) to examine profiles of traumatic stress symptoms in children and women exposed to IPV, (2) to evaluate how mothers' and children's PTSD symptoms relate, and (3) investigate trajectories of PTSD in IPV-exposed children as well as assess if intervention has a positive impact on children's PTSD symptoms over an eight-year period. Two-hundred ten children (ages 4-12), and their mothers were interviewed as part of this study. Approximately sixty families completed an eight-year follow-up interview to an intervention trial. Results demonstrated age-related differences in profiles of PTSD symptoms, as well as significant functional impairment of symptoms. Further, mothers' and children's symptoms of PTSD were significantly related in both younger and older children, suggesting it may be important to intervene with maternal mental health to have a significant impact on child functioning. Finally, this research demonstrated that children's traumatic stress symptoms worsen over time, regardless of treatment participation, and that this was related, in part, to their continued IPV exposure. Altogether, these results suggest more support is needed for children exposed to early-life IPV to promote their health long-term functioning.PHDPsychologyUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Linear expansion of dental stone after its final set and beyond two hours

    Get PDF
When accuracy and strength are required in fabricating working casts improved dental stones are recommended. The main variable affecting this accuracy is linear setting expansion. In this research study the linear setting expansion of three commonly used improved dental stones were compared over an extended 2-week period. Hard Rock, Silky Rock and Prima-Rock were vacuum mixed following manufacturers instructions. Five specimens of each stone were measured for linear expansion using a SAM EMI100 Expansion measuring Device. Expansion measurements were made at 10 and 30 minutes, 2, 24, 48, 72, and 120 hours. The gathered data were subjected to a two way ANOVA and the Tukey Multiple Range Test. The ADA specification #25 measures expansion over a 2-hour span. Continued dimensional changes may affect the accuracy of the final cast. The final fit of a restoration is determined by the accurate duplication of important oral structures and tooth preparations

Seismic Analysis of Historic Masonry Buildings: The Vicarious Palace in Pescia (Italy)

    Get PDF
Recent Italian earthquakes have underlined the need for wide monitoring and safety assessment of architectonical heritage. This has emerged also from requirements of the new Italian Technical Recommendations for buildings. Within this subject the paper investigates the seismic vulnerability of a specific monumental masonry building: the Vicarious Palace (Palazzo del Vicario) in Pescia, a small town near Florence. The structural behavior of the Palace was investigated using a finite element model in which the non-linearities of the masonry were considered by proper constitutive assumptions. The seismic behavior was evaluated by the pushover method, according to the Italian Technical Recommendations. The results were compared with the ones obtained by a simplified approach based on the kinematic theorem of limit analysis. Comparisons of the expected seismic demand vs the seismic capacity of the Palace confirm the weakness of this type of building to suffer extensive damage under earthquakes, as frequently observed in similar construction typologies. Additionally, the comprehension of the structural behavior under seismic loading allows the identification of a proper retrofitting strategy

    Multicomponent and High Entropy Alloys

YesThis paper describes some underlying principles of multicomponent and high entropy alloys, and gives some examples of these materials. Different types of multicomponent alloy and different methods of accessing multicomponent phase space are discussed. The alloys were manufactured by conventional and high speed solidification techniques, and their macroscopic, microscopic and nanoscale structures were studied by optical, X-ray and electron microscope methods. They exhibit a variety of amorphous, quasicrystalline, dendritic and eutectic structures
