    CMOS-3D smart imager architectures for feature detection

    This paper reports a multi-layered smart image sensor architecture for feature extraction based on detection of interest points. The architecture is conceived for 3-D integrated circuit technologies consisting of two layers (tiers) plus memory. The top tier includes sensing and processing circuitry aimed to perform Gaussian filtering and generate Gaussian pyramids in fully concurrent way. The circuitry in this tier operates in mixed-signal domain. It embeds in-pixel correlated double sampling, a switched-capacitor network for Gaussian pyramid generation, analog memories and a comparator for in-pixel analog-to-digital conversion. This tier can be further split into two for improved resolution; one containing the sensors and another containing a capacitor per sensor plus the mixed-signal processing circuitry. Regarding the bottom tier, it embeds digital circuitry entitled for the calculation of Harris, Hessian, and difference-of-Gaussian detectors. The overall system can hence be configured by the user to detect interest points by using the algorithm out of these three better suited to practical applications. The paper describes the different kind of algorithms featured and the circuitry employed at top and bottom tiers.     Socio-Cultural Determinants of Entrepreneurial Capabilities among the Chagga and Sukuma Small and Medium Enterprises in Tanzania

    This paper examines socio-cultural determinants (SCDs) linked to entrepreneurial capabilities (EC) among the Chagga and Sukuma Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Tanzania. A survey of 254 owner-managers was conducted in Kilimanjaro and Mwanza regions in order to collect quantitative data and case studies for qualitative data. Descriptive statistics and Binary Logistic Regression Model analysis were employed in estimating the effect of SCDs on EC. Results show that values, social factors, beliefs, norms and perceptions demonstrate positive effects while attitudes show a negative effect on EC among the Chagga and Sukuma. However, results show variation on the effect of SCD on EC between the Chagga and Sukuma in which the effect is stronger among the Chagga than Sukuma. This study concludes that SCDs have effect on EC and its implication is that individuals exposed to such SCDs are likely to have a sounding EC. The study recommends that policy makers should consider the role of SCDs in entrepreneurial undertaking.     Neutron spectroscopy with the Spherical Proportional Counter

    A novel large volume spherical proportional counter, recently developed, is used for neutron measurements. Gas mixtures of N2N_{2} with C2H6C_{2}H_{6} and pure N2N_{2} are studied for thermal and fast neutron detection, providing a new way for the neutron spectroscopy. The neutrons are detected via the 14N(n,p)C14{}^{14}N(n, p)C^{14} and 14N(n,α)B11{}^{14}N(n, \alpha)B^{11} reactions. Here we provide studies of the optimum gas mixture, the gas pressure and the most appropriate high voltage supply on the sensor of the detector in order to achieve the maximum amplification and better resolution. The detector is tested for thermal and fast neutrons detection with a 252Cf{}^{252}Cf and a 241Am9Be{}^{241}Am-{}^{9}Be neutron source. The atmospheric neutrons are successfully measured from thermal up to several MeV, well separated from the cosmic ray background. A comparison of the spherical proportional counter with the current available neutron counters is also given.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure

    The nitrogen cycle in the Seine and Scheldt estuaries

    The Seine and Scheldt estuaries are both located in the same geographical area and they represent important tributaries of the North Sea. Due to their high population density and large agricultural areas, the Seine and Scheldt estuaries receive extremely high nitrogen loads, mainly originating from wastewater and land fertilisers. The way this nitrogen is transformed in the system and exported to the North Sea depends on the characteristics of each system. The Seine and Scheldt estuaries are the outlet of river systems with respectively 78600 km² and 21500 km² watershed area, 420 and 108 m³/s average discharge, 46 and 40 % of agriculture area, and 195 and 425 inh./km² population density. Major difference between the estuaries lays in their hydrological characteristics. While the Seine estuary is typically channelled over most of its length with very reduced intertidal areas and short residence times (in the order of 1 week on the average), the Scheldt estuary has a typical funnel shape with large intertidal areas and long residence times (in the order of 1 month). The influence of these characteristics on major N-transformation processes (inorganic N assimilation by plankton, organic N mineralisation, nitrification, and denitrification) is presented and discussed, and the importance of both estuaries as sources of N for the North Sea is be evaluated

    Endometrial blood flow mapping using transvaginal power Doppler sonography in women with postmenopausal bleeding and thickened endometrium

    Objective To evaluate the role of transvaginal power Doppler sonography to discriminate between benign and malignant endometrial conditions in women presenting with postmenopausal bleeding and thickened endometrium at baseline sonography. Methods Ninety-one postmenopausal women (median age, 58 years; range, 47–83 years) presenting with uterine bleeding and a thickened endometrium (≥5-mm doublelayer endometrial thickness) on transvaginal sonography were included in this prospective study. Endometrial blood flow distribution was assessed in all patients by power Doppler immediately after B-mode transvaginal sonography. Three different vascular patterns were defined: Pattern A: multiple-vessel pattern, Pattern B: single-vessel pattern and Pattern C: scattered-vessel pattern. Histological diagnoses were obtained in all cases. No patient taking tamoxifen citrate or receiving hormone replacement therapy was included. Results Histological diagnoses were as follows: endometrial cancer: 33 (36%), endometrial polyp: 37 (41%), endometrial hyperplasia: 14 (15%), endometrial cystic atrophy: 7 (8%). Blood flow was found in 97%, 92%, 79% and 85% of cases of carcinoma, polyp, hyperplasia and endometrial cystic atrophy, respectively. A total of 81.3% of vascularized endometrial cancers showed Pattern A, 97.1% of vascularized polyps exhibited Pattern B and 72.7% of vascularized hyperplasias showed Pattern C. Sensitivity and specificity for endometrial cancer were 78.8% and 100%. For endometrial polyp these respective values were 89.2% and 87% and for hyperplasia they were 57.1% and 88.3%. Conclusions Transvaginal power Doppler blood flow mapping is useful to differentiate benign from malignant endometrial pathology in women presenting with postmenopausal bleeding and thickened endometrium at baseline sonography
