    Increasing Engagement and Retention: Teaching Classic Literature through the use of Geoinquiry

    Traditionally taught texts in the average public-school classroom tend to include Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, “The Mask of the Red Death\u27\u27 by Edgar Allan Poe, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. These classic texts, recognized by the literary community for their merits and accolades, have been brought into the schools for their universal themes and ability for students to be exposed to genres they might not otherwise choose to immerse themselves in independently. Fostering engagement with these texts can be a challenge, but engagement can be increased by adapting lessons to include cross-curricular elements. Geography, maps in particular, allows for a more in-depth connection to teens lives which not only makes a lasting impression but gives students a reason to care. Through cross curricular instruction, with the use of geoinquiry, there is an increase of student engagement of classically taught texts within the public-school system ultimately leading to higher student achievement

    Sub-Kolmogorov-Scale Fluctuations in Fluid Turbulence

    We relate the intermittent fluctuations of velocity gradients in turbulence to a whole range of local dissipation scales generalizing the picture of a single mean dissipation length. The statistical distribution of these local dissipation scales as a function of Reynolds number is determined in numerical simulations of forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence with a spectral resolution never applied before which exceeds the standard one by at least a factor of eight. The core of the scale distribution agrees well with a theoretical prediction. Increasing Reynolds number causes the generation of ever finer local dissipation scales. This is in line with a less steep decay of the large-wavenumber energy spectra in the dissipation range. The energy spectrum for the highest accessible Taylor microscale Reynolds number R_lambda=107 does not show a bottleneck.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures (Figs. 1 and 3 in reduced quality

    Has the distribution of smoking across young adult transition milestones changed over the past 20 years? Evidence from the 1970 British Cohort Study (1996) and Next Steps (2015-16)

    Introduction: Transitions into work and family life during young adulthood exacerbate differences in the progression of smoking over the life-course. Few have considered how changes in smoking and the transition to adulthood in the past two decades have influenced these relationships over time. Methods: We compared the distribution of smoking at ages 25–26 across transition milestones among 3764 men and 4568 women in the 1970 British Cohort study (1996) and 3426 men and 4281 women in the Next Steps study (2015–16). We regressed occasional and daily smoking status on educational attainment, economic activity, living arrangements, relationship status, and parenthood, adjusting for family background, socio-demographics, and smoking history. Results: There were few differences in associations between the 1996 and 2015-16 samples. Young men and women were less likely to smoke if they had higher education, were homeowners, and cohabited with a partner. Women were less likely to smoke occasionally if they were full-time students, and men were less likely to smoke daily if they were employed full-time and not living with children. However, comparing associations in 2015–16 to 1996: 1) in men, higher education had a weaker negative association and living with a partner had a stronger negative association with daily smoking; 2) in women, independently renting had a weaker positive association with daily smoking. Conclusions: Despite considerable changes in smoking and the transition to adulthood over the past two decades, the distribution of smoking at ages 25–26 across transition milestones has been relatively stable during this time period in Great Britain

    Turbulent transport of material particles: An experimental study of finite size effects

    We use an acoustic Lagrangian tracking technique, particularly adapted to measurements in open flows, and a versatile material particles generator (in the form of soap bubbles with adjustable size and density) to characterize Lagrangian statistics of finite sized, neutrally bouyant, particles transported in an isotropic turbulent flow of air. We vary the size of the particles in a range corresponding to turbulent inertial scales and explore how the turbulent forcing experienced by the particles depends on their size. We show that, while the global shape of the intermittent acceleration probability density function does not depend significantly on particle size, the acceleration variance of the particles decreases as they become larger in agreement with the classical scaling for the spectrum of Eulerian pressure fluctuations in the carrier flow

    A multi-wavelength view on the dusty Wolf-Rayet star WR 48a

    We present results from the first attempts to derive various physical characteristics of the dusty Wolf-Rayet star WR 48a based on a multi-wavelength view of its observational properties. This is done on the basis of new optical and near-infrared spectral observations and on data from various archives in the optical, radio and X-rays. The optical spectrum of WR 48a is acceptably well represented by a sum of two spectra: of a WR star of the WC8 type and of a WR star of the WN8h type. The strength of the interstellar absorption features in the optical spectra of WR 48a and the near-by stars D2-3 and D2-7 (both members of the open cluster Danks 2) indicates that WR 48a is located at a distance of ~4 kpc from us. WR 48a is very likely a thermal radio source and for such a case and smooth (no clumps) wind its radio emission suggests a relatively high mass-loss rate of this dusty WR star (dM/dt = a few x 10^(-4) solar masses per year). Long timescale (years) variability of WR 48a is established in the optical, radio and X-rays. Colliding stellar winds likely play a very important role in the physics of this object. However, some LBV-like (luminous blue variable) activity could not be excluded as well.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 16 pages, 16 figures, 6 table

    A Chandra Grating Observation of the Dusty Wolf-Rayet Star WR48a

    We present results of a Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) observation of the carbon-rich Wolf-Rayet (WR) star WR48a. These are the first high-resolution spectra of this object in X-rays. Blue-shifted centroids of the spectral lines of about -360 km/s and line widths of 1000 - 1500 km/s (FWHM) were deduced from the analysis of the line profiles of strong emission lines. The forbidden line of Si XIII is strong and not suppressed, indicating that the rarefied 10-30 MK plasma forms far from strong sources of far-UV emission, most likely in a wind collision zone. Global spectral modeling showed that the X-ray spectrum of WR48a suffered higher absorption in the October 2012 Chandra observation compared to a previous January 2008 XMM-Newton observation. The emission measure of the hot plasma in WR48a decreased by a factor ~ 3 over the same period of time. The most likely physical picture that emerges from the analysis of the available X-ray data is that of colliding stellar winds in a wide binary system with an elliptical orbit. We propose that the unseen secondary star in the system is another WR star or perhaps a luminous blue variable.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa
