Religion and Attitudes toward Same-Sex Marriage among U.S. Latinos
Objectives. This study examines links between multiple aspects of religious involvement and attitudes toward same-sex marriage among U.S. Latinos. The primary focus is on variations by affiliation and participation, but the possible mediating roles of biblical beliefs, clergy cues, and the role of religion in shaping political views are also considered.
Methods. We use binary logistic regression models to analyze data from a large nationwide sample of U.S. Latinos conducted by the Pew Hispanic Forum in late 2006.
Results. Findings highlight the strong opposition to same-sex marriage among Latino evangelical (or conservative) Protestants and members of sectarian groups (e.g., LDS), even compared with devout Catholics. Although each of the hypothesized mediators is significantly linked with attitudes toward same-sex marriage, for the most part controlling for them does not alter the massive affiliation/attendance differences in attitudes toward same-sex marriage.
Conclusions. This study illustrates the importance of religious cleavages in public opinion on social issues within the diverse U.S. Latino population. The significance of religious variations in Hispanic civic life is likely to increase with the growth of the Latino population and the rising numbers of Protestants and sectarians among Latinos
The role of short periodic orbits in quantum maps with continuous openings
We apply a recently developed semiclassical theory of short periodic orbits
to the continuously open quantum tribaker map. In this paradigmatic system the
trajectories are partially bounced back according to continuous reflectivity
functions. This is relevant in many situations that include optical
microresonators and more complicated boundary conditions. In a perturbative
regime, the shortest periodic orbits belonging to the classical repeller of the
open map - a cantor set given by a region of exactly zero reflectivity - prove
to be extremely robust in supporting a set of long-lived resonances of the
continuously open quantum maps. Moreover, for step like functions a significant
reduction in the number needed is obtained, similarly to the completely open
situation. This happens despite a strong change in the spectral properties when

Faith, Race-Ethnicity, and Public Policy Preferences: Religious Schemas and Abortion Attitudes among U.S. Latinos
Research has demonstrated that white conservative Protestants are more opposed to abortion than their Catholic counterparts. At the same time, conservative Protestantism has made significant inroads among U.S. Latinos. This study augments existing research on religion and racial-ethnic variations in abortion attitudes by comparing levels of support for legalized abortion among Catholic and conservative Protestant Latinos. Data are drawn from a nationally representative sample of U.S. Latinos. Significantly greater opposition to abortion is found among religiously devout conservative Protestant Latinos when compared with their Catholic counterparts. Latino Catholicism, which functions as a near-monopolistic, highly institutionalized faith tradition among Hispanics, produces weaker antiabortion attitudes than those exhibited in Latino conservative Protestantism. Among Latinos, conservative Protestantism operates as a niche voluntaristic faith. These factors produce a religious schema that yields robust antiabortion attitudes. This study has important implications for understanding the intersection of race-ethnicity, religion, and public policy preferences
Experimentally Feasible Security Check for n-qubit Quantum Secret Sharing
In this article we present a general security strategy for quantum secret
sharing (QSS) protocols based on the HBB scheme presented by Hillery, Bu\v{z}ek
and Berthiaume [Phys. Rev A \textbf{59}, 1829 (1999)]. We focus on a
generalization of the HBB protocol to communication parties thus including
-partite GHZ states. We show that the multipartite version of the HBB scheme
is insecure in certain settings and impractical when going to large . To
provide security for such QSS schemes in general we use the framework presented
by some of the authors [M. Huber, F. Minert, A. Gabriel, B. C. Hiesmayr, Phys.
Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 210501 (2010)] to detect certain genuine partite
entanglement between the communication parties. In particular, we present a

Cannibalism as a life boat mechanism
Under certain conditions a cannibalistic population can survive when food for the adults is too scarce to support a non-cannibalistic population. Cannibalism can have this lifeboat effect if (i) the juveniles feed on a resource inaccessible to the adults; and (ii) the adults are cannibalistic and thus incorporate indirectly the inaccessible resource. Using a simple model we conclude that the mechanism works when, at low population densities, the average yield, in terms of new offspring, due to the energy provided by one cannibalized juvenile is larger than one
Stellar rotation, binarity, and lithium in the open cluster IC4756
An important aspect in the evolutionary scenario of cool stars is their
rotation and the rotationally induced magnetic activity and interior mixing.
Stars in open clusters are particularly useful tracers for these aspects
because of their known ages. We aim to characterize the open cluster IC4756 and
measure stellar rotation periods and surface differential rotation for a sample
of its member stars. Thirty-seven cluster stars were observed continuously with
the CoRoT satellite for 78 days in 2010. Follow-up high-resolution spectroscopy
of the CoRoT targets and deep Str\"omgren and H photometry
of the entire cluster were obtained with our robotic STELLA facility and its
echelle spectrograph and wide-field imager, respectively. We determined
high-precision photometric periods for 27 of the 37 CoRoT targets and found
values between 0.155 and 11.4 days. Twenty of these are rotation periods.
Twelve targets are spectroscopic binaries of which 11 were previously unknown;
orbits are given for six of them. Six targets were found that show evidence of
differential rotation with in the range 0.04-0.15. Five
stars are non-radially pulsating stars with fundamental periods of below 1d,
two stars are semi-contact binaries, and one target is a micro-flaring star
that also shows rotational modulation. Nine stars in total were not considered
members because of much redder color(s) and deviant radial velocities with
respect to the cluster mean. H photometry indicates that the cluster
ensemble does not contain magnetically over-active stars. The cluster average
metallicity is -0.080.06 (rms) and its logarithmic lithium abundance for
12 G-dwarf stars is 2.390.17 (rms). [...]Comment: A&A, in pres
Charge order induced by electron-lattice interaction in NaV2O5
We present Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculations of the
ground-state properties of quarter-filled ladders including static
electron-lattice coupling. Isolated ladders and two coupled ladders are
considered, with model parameters obtained from band-structure calculations for
-NaVO. The relevant Holstein coupling to the lattice
causes static out-of-plane lattice distortions, which appear concurrently with
a charge-ordered state and which exhibit the same zigzag pattern observed in
experiments. The inclusion of electron-lattice coupling drastically reduces the
critical nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion needed to obtain the
charge-ordered state. No spin gap is present in the ordered phase. The charge
ordering is driven by the Coulomb repulsion and the electron-lattice
interaction. With electron-lattice interaction, coupling two ladders has
virtually no effect on or on the characteristics of the charge-ordered
phase. At V=0.46\eV, a value consistent with previous estimates, the lattice
distortion, charge gap, charge order parameter, and the effective spin coupling
are in good agreement with experimental data for NaVO_5$.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
Tailor-made directional emission in nanoimprinted plasmonic-based light-emitting devices
We demonstrate an enhanced and tailor-made directional emission of light-emitting devices using nanoimprinted hexagonal arrays of aluminum nanoparticles. Fourier microscopy reveals that the luminescence of the device is not only determined by the material properties of the organic dye molecules but is also strongly influenced by the coherent scattering resulting from periodically arranged metal nanoparticles. Emitters can couple to lattice-induced hybrid plasmonic–photonic modes sustained by plasmonic arrays. Such modes enhance the spatial coherence of an emitting layer, allowing the efficient beaming of the emission along narrow angular and spectral ranges. We show that tailoring the separation of the nanoparticles in the array yields an accurate angular distribution of the emission. This combination of large-area metal nanostructures fabricated by nanoimprint lithography and light-emitting devices is beneficial for the design and optimization of solid-state lighting systems
