Kappa symmetry, generalized calibrations and spinorial geometry
We extend the spinorial geometry techniques developed for the solution of
supergravity Killing spinor equations to the kappa symmetry condition for
supersymmetric brane probe configurations in any supergravity background. In
particular, we construct the linear systems associated with the kappa symmetry
projector of M- and type II branes acting on any Killing spinor. As an example,
we show that static supersymmetric M2-brane configurations which admit a
Killing spinor representing the SU(5) orbit of are generalized
almost hermitian calibrations and the embedding map is pseudo-holomorphic. We
also present a bound for the Euclidean action of M- and type II branes embedded
in a supersymmetric background with non-vanishing fluxes. This leads to an
extension of the definition of generalized calibrations which allows for the
presence of non-trivial Born-Infeld type of fields in the brane actions.Comment: 9 pages, latex, references added and minor change

Composition of Cosmic Rays from Coincidences Between Air Showers and Muons in the Soudan2 Detector
Abstract A small array of charged particle detectors above ground was run in coincidence with the Soudan2 underground detector from 1999 to 2000. Almost 4600 coincident cosmic ray events were analyzed with primary energy between 10 14 and 10 17 eV. The energy was determined from the density of particles in the surface array: groups of scintillator modules and proportional tubes. By analyzing the number of underground muons and comparing with air shower Monte Carlo simulations, the cosmic ray composition in this energy range was estimated. These data suggest the nuclear composition remains mixed up to at least 10 15 eV
The Potential for EBV Vaccines to Prevent Multiple Sclerosis
There is increasing evidence suggesting that Epstein-Barr virus infection is a causative factor of multiple sclerosis (MS). Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human herpesvirus, Human Gammaherpesvirus 4. EBV infection shows two peaks: firstly, during early childhood and, secondly during the teenage years. Approximately, 90-95% of adults have been infected with EBV and for many this will have been a subclinical event. EBV infection can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality; for example, primary infection in older children or adults is the leading cause of infectious mononucleosis (IM). A disrupted immune response either iatrogenically induced or through genetic defects can result in lymphoproliferative disease. Finally, EBV is oncogenic and is associated with several malignancies. For these reasons, vaccination to prevent the damaging aspects of EBV infection is an attractive intervention. No EBV vaccines have been licensed and the prophylactic vaccine furthest along in clinical trials contains the major virus glycoprotein gp350. In a phase 2 study, the vaccine reduced the rate of IM by 78% but did not prevent EBV infection. An EBV vaccine to prevent IM in adolescence or young adulthood is the most likely population-based vaccine strategy to be tested and adopted. National registry studies will need to be done to track the incidence of MS in EBV-vaccinated and unvaccinated people to see an effect of the vaccine on MS. Assessment of vaccine efficacy with MS being a delayed consequence of EBV infection with the average age of onset being approximately 30 years of age represents multiple challenges.</p
