Lipid apheresis techniques: current status in Germany
For long-term lipid apheresis therapy, several different technical systems have been developed which enable effective reduction of LDL cholesterol and other atherogenic lipoproteins, such as Lp(a), with sufficient selectivity and good clinical tolerance. Suitable techniques include whole blood adsorption with polyacrylamide and dextran sulfate cellulose, while primary plasma separation is used for cascade filtration, heparin-induced precipitation, immunoadsorption, silicate gel adsorption, and dextran sulfate cellulose (both techniques)

Multilevel Deconstruction of the In Vivo Behavior of Looped DNA-Protein Complexes
Protein-DNA complexes with loops play a fundamental role in a wide variety of
cellular processes, ranging from the regulation of DNA transcription to
telomere maintenance. As ubiquitous as they are, their precise in vivo
properties and their integration into the cellular function still remain
largely unexplored. Here, we present a multilevel approach that efficiently
connects in both directions molecular properties with cell physiology and use
it to characterize the molecular properties of the looped DNA-lac repressor
complex while functioning in vivo. The properties we uncover include the
presence of two representative conformations of the complex, the stabilization
of one conformation by DNA architectural proteins, and precise values of the
underlying twisting elastic constants and bending free energies. Incorporation
of all this molecular information into gene-regulation models reveals an
unprecedented versatility of looped DNA-protein complexes at shaping the

Successful Treatment of Protein-Losing Gastroenteropathy with Steroid Pulse and Immunosuppressive Therapies in a Patient with Sjögren Syndrome
We report the case of a 59-year-old female who developed facial edema together with hypoproteinemia. On the basis of 99mTc-human serum albumin scintigraphy and a1-antitrypsin clearance, she was diagnosed with protein-losing gastroenteropathy. Furthermore, she was diagnosed with Sjögren syndrome on the basis of eye and oral dryness, positive result with anti-SSA antibody, and salivary gland biopsy. Her symptoms improved with the use of immunosuppressive agents following steroid pulse therapy. Therefore, steroid pulse therapy and immunosuppressive agents should be considered as possible effective treatment strategies for protein-losing gastroenteropathy associated with autoimmune diseases
Probing host pathogen cross-talk by transcriptional profiling of both Mycobacterium tuberculosis and infected human dendritic cells and macrophages
This study provides the proof of principle that probing the host and the microbe transcriptomes simultaneously is a valuable means to accessing unique information on host pathogen interactions. Our results also underline the extraordinary plasticity of host cell and pathogen responses to infection, and provide a solid framework to further understand the complex mechanisms involved in immunity to M. tuberculosis and in mycobacterial adaptation to different intracellular environments
Depleted 15N in hydrolysable-N of arctic soils and its implication for mycorrhizal fungi–plant interaction

total N supply to many vascular plants. Using stable isotope ratios (δ15N) and the mass balance
among N pools of plants, fungal tissues, and soils, a number of efforts have been made in recent
years to quantify the flux of N from mycorrhizal fungi to host plants. Current estimates of this
flux for arctic tundra ecosystems rely on the untested assumption that the δ15N of labile organic
N taken up by the fungi is approximately the same as the δ15N of bulk soil. We report here
hydrolysable amino acids are more depleted in 15N relative to hydrolysable ammonium and
amino sugars in arctic tundra soils near Toolik Lake, Alaska, USA. We demonstrate, using a
case study, that recognizing the depletion in 15N for hydrolysable amino acids (δ15N = -5.6 ‰ on
average) would alter recent estimates of N flux between mycorrhizal fungi and host plants in an

The effects of size of opening in vegetation and litter cover on seedling establishment of goldenrods ( Solidago spp.)
We investigated the effects of size of opening in the vegetation and litter cover on seedling establishment of two species of goldenrods ( Solidago spp.) in an abandoned field in southwestern Michigan, U.S.A. Seeds of S. canadensis and S. juncea were sown into clipped plots, ranging from 0 cm (control, unclipped) to 100 cm in diameter, with and without litter. Seedling emergence, survival and growth were followed for one year. Soil moisture was not significantly different among the opening sizes, but, within a size, tended to be lower when litter was removed. Light intensity at the soil surface was positively related to opening size early in the growing season, but later in the growing season reached a maximum in intermediate-sized openings and then leveled off.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47747/1/442_2004_Article_BF00379516.pd
