The "red shelf" of the Hb line in the Seyfert 1 galaxies RXS J01177+3637 and HS 0328+05
A few Seyfert 1s have a Hb profile with a red wing usually called the "red
shelf". The most popular interpretation of this feature is that it is due to
broad redshifted lines of Hb and [OIII]4959,5007; we have observed two Seyfert
1s displaying a "red shelf" and showed that in these two objects the main
contributor is most probably the HeI 4922,5016 lines having the velocity and
width of the broad Hb component. There is no evidence for the presence of a
broad redshifted component of Hb or [OIII] in any of these two objects.Comment: LaTeX file (uses AA vers. 5.1 class, enclosed), 8 pages, 9 figures.

Miscellaneous observations of active galactic nuclei. II
We observed 37 AGN candidates and classified them on the basis of their
spectroscopic properties; three are confirmed QSOs, one is a BL Lac object,
nine are Seyfert 1 galaxies, four Seyfert 2s, while twenty are HII regions.Comment: LaTeX 2e, 15 pages (4 tables and 9 .eps figures included in text).

A spectrophotometric atlas of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies
We have compiled a list of 83 objects classified as Narrow-Line Seyfert 1
galaxies (NLS1s) or known to have a broad Balmer component narrower than 2000
km/s. Out of these, 19 turned out to have been spectroscopically misidentified
in previous studies; only 64 of the selected objects are genuine NLS1s. We have
spectroscopically observed 59 of them and tried to characterize their Narrow
and Broad-Line Regions (NLR and BLR) by fitting the emission-lines with
Gaussian and/or Lorentzian profiles. In most cases, the broad Balmer components
are well fitted by a single Lorentzian profile. This has consequences
concerning their FWHMs and line ratios: when the broad Balmer components are
fitted with a Lorentzian, most narrow line regions have line ratios typical of
Seyfert 2s while, when a Gaussian profile isused for fitting the broad Balmer
components, the line ratios are widely scattered in the usual diagnostic
diagrams (Veilleux & Osterbrock 1987). We find that, in general, the [O III]
lines have a relatively narrow Gaussian profile (~ 200-500 km/s FWHM) with
often, in addition, a second broad (~ 500-1800 km/s FWHM), blueshifted Gaussian
component. We do not confirm that the [O III] lines are weak in NLS1s. As
previously suggested, there is a continuous transition of all properties
between NLS1s and classical Broad-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (BLS1s) and the limit
of 2000 km/s used to separate the two species is arbitrary; R_4570, the ratio
of the Fe II to the H_beta fluxes, could be a physically more meaningful

Determinant Line Bundles and Topological Invariants of Hyperbolic Geometry - Expository Remarks
We give some remarks on twisted determinant line bundles and Chern-Simons
topological invariants associated with real hyperbolic manifolds. Index of a
twisted Dirac operator is derived. We discuss briefly application of obtained

The puzzle of the soft X-ray excess in AGN: absorption or reflection?
The 2-10 keV continuum of AGN is generally well represented by a single power
law. However, at smaller energies the continuum displays an excess with respect
to the extrapolation of this power law, called the ''soft X-ray excess''. Until
now this soft X-ray excess was attributed, either to reflection of the hard
X-ray source by the accretion disk, or to the presence of an additional
comptonizing medium, giving a steep spectrum. An alternative solution proposed
by Gierlinski and Done (2004) is that a single power law well represents both
the soft and the hard X-ray emission and the impression of the soft X-ray
excess is due to absorption of a primary power law by a relativistic wind. We
examine the advantages and drawbacks of reflection versus absorption models,
and we conclude that the observed spectra can be well modeled, either by
absorption (for a strong excess), or by reflection (for a weak excess). However
the physical conditions required by the absorption models do not seem very

Signals for New Spin-1 Resonances in Electroweak Gauge Boson Pair Production at the LHC
The mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) will be directly
scrutinized soon at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We analyze the LHC
potential to look for new vector bosons associated with the EWSB sector. We
present a possible model independent approach to search for these new spin--1
resonances. We show that the analyses of the processes pp --> l^+ l^- Emiss_T,
l^\pm j j Emiss_T, l^\pm l^+ l^- Emiss_T, and l^+ l^- j j (with l=e or \mu and
j=jet) have a large reach at the LHC and can lead to the discovery or exclusion
of many EWSB scenarios such as Higgsless models.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
The 12 prophets dataset
The "Ajeijadinho 3D" project is an initiative supported by the University of
S\~ao Paulo (Museum of Science and Dean of Culture and Extension), which
involves the 3D digitization of art works of Brazilian sculptor Antonio
Francisco Lisboa, better known as Aleijadinho. The project made use of advanced
acquisition and processing of 3D meshes for preservation and dissemination of
the cultural heritage. The dissemination occurs through a Web portal, so that
the population has the opportunity to meet the art works in detail using 3D
visualization and interaction. The portal address is
http://www.aleijadinho3d.icmc.usp.br. The 3D acquisitions were conducted over a
week at the end of July 2013 in the cities of Ouro Preto, MG, Brazil and
Congonhas do Campo, MG, Brazil. The scanning was done with a special equipment
supplied by company Leica Geosystems, which allowed the work to take place at
distances between 10 and 30 meters, defining a non-invasive procedure,
simplified logistics, and without the need for preparation or isolation of the
sites. In Ouro Preto, we digitized the churches of Francisco of Assis, Our Lady
of Carmo, and Our Lady of Mercy; in Congonhas do Campo we scanned the entire
Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos and his 12 prophets. Once scanned, the art
works went through a long process of preparation, which required careful
handling of meshes done by experts from the University of S\~ao Paulo in

IFNAR1 Controls Progression to Cerebral Malaria in Children and CD8+ T Cell Brain Pathology in Plasmodium berghei-Infected Mice

There is no public supplementary material available.Development of cerebral malaria (CM), a severe and fatal form of clinical Plasmodium falciparum infection, results from a damaging cascade of vascular, inflammatory, and immunological host responses that leads to brain injury. Progression to CM can be modified by host genetic factors. Our case-control study in Angolan children aimed at highlighting the role of IFN (α, β) receptor 1 (IFNAR1) in progression to CM. We report a robust association between IFNAR1 and CM protection, as well as detailed studies showing analogous protection from experimental CM in Ifnar1(-/-) mice infected with P. berghei ANKA. We developed a novel cell-transfer protocol that enables spleen cell priming in the absence of disease. This led to the discovery that IFNAR1 expression in CD8(+) T cells is crucial and can abrogate resistance to experimental CM in Ifnar1(-/-) mice. Splenic CD8(+) T cells from Ifnar1(-/-) mice are functionally activated upon infection, yet are unable to mediate experimental CM development within the brain tissue. Our findings prove that IFNAR1 signaling unleashes CD8(+) T cell effector capacity, which is vital for CM, and raises the hypothesis that the cohesive role of IFNAR1 in both human and mouse CM operates through CD8(+) T cell triggering.FCT fellowships: (SFRH/BD/33564/2008, SFRH/BPD/29354/2006)
