    Structural properties of crumpled cream layers

    The cream layer is a complex heterogeneous material of biological origin which forms spontaneously at the air-milk interface. Here, it is studied the crumpling of a single cream layer packing under its own weight at room temperature in three-dimensional space. The structure obtained in these circumstances has low volume fraction and anomalous fractal dimensions.     The meat market in Brazil: an econometric approach.

    We describe the relative participation of the meat market (beef, pork and chicken) in Brazil in the total agribusiness and in total country?s exports. An analysis of the world meat market is carried out from the point of view of the values of consumption, production, exports and imports. A multi-criteria DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) approach is then used to generate world market classifications. Particularly, the Brazilian insertion in the world market is viewed from these perspectives. A partial equilibrium model for the meat market is fit to Brazilian data by three stages least squares. The model is consistent with the data and is used for simulation purposes.     Universal Power Law in the Noise from a Crumpled Elastic Sheet

    Using high-resolution digital recordings, we study the crackling sound emitted from crumpled sheets of mylar as they are strained. These sheets possess many of the qualitative features of traditional disordered systems including frustration and discrete memory. The sound can be resolved into discrete clicks, emitted during rapid changes in the rough conformation of the sheet. Observed click energies range over six orders of magnitude. The measured energy autocorrelation function for the sound is consistent with a stretched exponential C(t) ~ exp(-(t/T)^{b}) with b = .35. The probability distribution of click energies has a power law regime p(E) ~ E^{-a} where a = 1.     Gravity localization on thick branes: a numerical approach

    We introduce a numerical procedure to investigate the spectrum of massive modes and its contribution for gravity localization on thick branes. After considering a model with an analytically known Schroedinger potential, we present the method and discuss its applicability. With this procedure we can study several models even when the Schroedinger potential is not known analytically. We discuss both the occurrence of localization of gravity and the correction to the Newtonian potential given by the massive modes.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure

    An Efficient Local Search for Partial Latin Square Extension Problem

    A partial Latin square (PLS) is a partial assignment of n symbols to an nxn grid such that, in each row and in each column, each symbol appears at most once. The partial Latin square extension problem is an NP-hard problem that asks for a largest extension of a given PLS. In this paper we propose an efficient local search for this problem. We focus on the local search such that the neighborhood is defined by (p,q)-swap, i.e., removing exactly p symbols and then assigning symbols to at most q empty cells. For p in {1,2,3}, our neighborhood search algorithm finds an improved solution or concludes that no such solution exists in O(n^{p+1}) time. We also propose a novel swap operation, Trellis-swap, which is a generalization of (1,q)-swap and (2,q)-swap. Our Trellis-neighborhood search algorithm takes O(n^{3.5}) time to do the same thing. Using these neighborhood search algorithms, we design a prototype iterated local search algorithm and show its effectiveness in comparison with state-of-the-art optimization solvers such as IBM ILOG CPLEX and LocalSolver.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    Corporate social responsibility, job satisfaction, and customer orientation in Angola

    This study sought to examine the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on employees' costumer orientation through the mediating role of job satisfaction for a sample of tourism and hospitality employees in Angola. Data were collected from 125 respondents using anonymously completed structured questionnaires. Perceived CSR was assessed by the scale developed by Martínez et al. (2013), which includes social, economic and environmental issues. Job satisfaction was measured using Lima et al.'s (1994) job-facet scale, while customer orientation was evaluated using a reduced version of Saxe and Weitz's (1982) customer-orientation scale. The three dimensions of CSR in question have dissimilar levels of association with customer orientation. Only perceptions of company engagement in social CSR practices explain employees' customer orientation, and the relationship is partially mediated by job satisfaction.     We demonstrate that an array of optical antennas may render a thin layer of randomly oriented semiconductor nanocrystals into an enhanced and highly directional source of polarized light. The array sustains collective plasmonic lattice resonances which are in spectral overlap with the emission of the nanocrystals over narrow angular regions.     Non-cooperative game theory is at its heart a theory of cognition, specifically a theory of how decisions are made. Game theory\u27s leverage is that we can design different payoffs, settings, player arrays, action possibilities, and information structures, and that these differences lead to different strategies, outcomes, and equilibria. It is well-known that, in experimental settings, people do not adopt the predicted strategies, outcomes, and equilibria. The standard response to this mismatch of prediction and observation is to add various psychological axioms to the game-theoretic framework. Regardless of the differing specific proposals and results, game theory uniformly makes certain cognitive assumptions that seem rarely to be acknowledged, much less interrogated. Indeed, it is not widely understood that game theory is essentially a cognitive theory. Here, we interrogate those cognitive assumptions. We do more than reject specific predictions from specific games. More broadly, we reject the underlying cognitive model implicitly assumed by game theory
