    NeuralStory: an Interactive Multimedia System for Video Indexing and Re-use

    In the last years video has been swamping the Internet: websites, social networks, and business multimedia systems are adopting video as the most important form of communication and information. Video are normally accessed as a whole and are not indexed in the visual content. Thus, they are often uploaded as short, manually cut clips with user-provided annotations, keywords and tags for retrieval. In this paper, we propose a prototype multimedia system which addresses these two limitations: it overcomes the need of human intervention in the video setting, thanks to fully deep learning-based solutions, and decomposes the storytelling structure of the video into coherent parts. These parts can be shots, key-frames, scenes and semantically related stories, and are exploited to provide an automatic annotation of the visual content, so that parts of video can be easily retrieved. This also allows a principled re-use of the video itself: users of the platform can indeed produce new storytelling by means of multi-modal presentations, add text and other media, and propose a different visual organization of the content.     Cataloging Existing Hearing Loss Cohort Data to Guide the Development of Precision Medicine for Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Systematic Review of Hearing Repositories

    Recent breakthroughs in our understanding of sensorineural hearing loss etiology have encouraged the identification of novel hearing therapeutics, paving the way for precision hearing medicine. Critical to this field is the curation of health resources on hearing data. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to map existing (inter)national and regional datasets that include hearing data to inform the development of future hearing repositories. Systematic literature review was performed adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and MetaAnalysis recommendations. Databases, including those from gray literature, were searched to identify publications reporting on phenotypic and/ or genotypic hearing data in May 2019. The databases reviewed were Medline, PubMed, Embase databases, and Google Scholar. Publications on local datasets were excluded. All hearing datasets identified in the screening process were noted. For each dataset, geography, context, objective, period of time run, numbers and demographics of participants, genomic data, hearing measures and instruments used were extracted and cataloged. One hundred and eighty-eight datasets were identified, containing hearing data on populations ranging from 100 to 1.39 million individuals, and all extracted data have been cataloged. This searchable resource has been made accessible online. This unique catalog provides an overview of existing datasets that contain valuable information on hearing. This can be used to inform the development of national and international patient data repositories for hearing loss and guide strategic collaboration between key stakeholder groups, pivotal to the delivery and development of sensorineural hearing loss precision diagnostics and treatments

    Measurement of GEp/GMp in ep -> ep to Q2 = 5.6 GeV2

    The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton, GEp/GMp, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic epep\vec ep \to e\vec p reaction. The new data presented in this article span the range 3.5 < Q2 < 5.6 GeV2 and are well described by a linear Q2 fit.     (Micro)evolutionary changes and the evolutionary potential of bird migration

    Seasonal migration is the yearly long-distance movement of individuals between their breeding and wintering grounds. Individuals from nearly every animal group exhibit this behavior, but probably the most iconic migration is carried out by birds, from the classic V-shape formation of geese on migration to the amazing nonstop long-distance flights undertaken by Arctic Terns Sterna paradisaea. In this chapter, we discuss how seasonal migration has shaped the field of evolution. First, this behavior is known to turn on and off quite rapidly, but controversy remains concerning where this behavior first evolved geographically and whether the ancestral state was sedentary or migratory (Fig. 7.1d, e). We review recent work using new analytical techniques to provide insight into this topic. Second, it is widely accepted that there is a large genetic basis to this trait, especially in groups like songbirds that migrate alone and at night precluding any opportunity for learning. Key hypotheses on this topic include shared genetic variation used by different populations to migrate and only few genes being involved in its control. We summarize recent work using new techniques for both phenotype and genotype characterization to evaluate and challenge these hypotheses. Finally, one topic that has received less attention is the role these differences in migratory phenotype could play in the process of speciation. Specifically, many populations breed next to one another but take drastically different routes on migration (Fig. 7.2). This difference could play an important role in reducing gene flow between populations, but our inability to track most birds on migration has so far precluded evaluations of this hypothesis. The advent of new tracking techniques means we can track many more birds with increasing accuracy on migration, and this work has provided important insight into migration's role in speciation that we will review here

    Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome: Chest X-ray or lung ultrasound? A systematic review

    Background and aim: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) is a leading cause of morbidity in preterm new-born babies (< 37 weeks gestation age [GA]). The current diagnostic reference standard includes clinical testing and chest radiography (CXR) with associated exposure to ionising radiation. The aim of this review was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of lung ultrasound (LUS) against the reference standard in symptomatic neonates of ≤ 42 weeks GA. Methods: A systematic search of literature published between 1990 and 2016 identified 803 potentially relevant studies. Six studies met the review inclusion criteria and were retrieved for analysis. Quality assessment was performed before data extraction and meta-analysis. Results: Four prospective cohort studies and two case control studies included 480 neonates. All studies were of moderate methodological quality although heterogeneity was evident across the studies. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of LUS were 97% (95% confidence interval [CI] 94%-99%) and 91% (CI: 86%-95%) respectively. False positive diagnoses were made in sixteen cases due to pneumonia (n=8), transient tachypnoea (n=3), pneumothorax (n=1) and meconium aspiration syndrome (n=1); the diagnoses of the remaining three false positive results were not specified. False negatives diagnoses occurred in nine cases, only two were specified as air-leak syndromes. Conclusions: LUS was highly sensitive for the detection of NRDS although there is potential to miss co-morbid air-leak syndromes (ALS). Further research into LUS diagnostic accuracy for neonatal ALS and economic modelling for service integration is required before LUS can replace CXR as the imaging component of the reference standard

    Effects of Thyroxine Exposure on Osteogenesis in Mouse Calvarial Pre-Osteoblasts

    The incidence of craniosynostosis is one in every 1,800-2500 births. The gene-environment model proposes that if a genetic predisposition is coupled with environmental exposures, the effects can be multiplicative resulting in severely abnormal phenotypes. At present, very little is known about the role of gene-environment interactions in modulating craniosynostosis phenotypes, but prior evidence suggests a role for endocrine factors. Here we provide a report of the effects of thyroid hormone exposure on murine calvaria cells. Murine derived calvaria cells were exposed to critical doses of pharmaceutical thyroxine and analyzed after 3 and 7 days of treatment. Endpoint assays were designed to determine the effects of the hormone exposure on markers of osteogenesis and included, proliferation assay, quantitative ALP activity assay, targeted qPCR for mRNA expression of Runx2, Alp, Ocn, and Twist1, genechip array for 28,853 targets, and targeted osteogenic microarray with qPCR confirmations. Exposure to thyroxine stimulated the cells to express ALP in a dose dependent manner. There were no patterns of difference observed for proliferation. Targeted RNA expression data confirmed expression increases for Alp and Ocn at 7 days in culture. The genechip array suggests substantive expression differences for 46 gene targets and the targeted osteogenesis microarray indicated 23 targets with substantive differences. 11 gene targets were chosen for qPCR confirmation because of their known association with bone or craniosynostosis (Col2a1, Dmp1, Fgf1, 2, Igf1, Mmp9, Phex, Tnf, Htra1, Por, and Dcn). We confirmed substantive increases in mRNA for Phex, FGF1, 2, Tnf, Dmp1, Htra1, Por, Igf1 and Mmp9, and substantive decreases for Dcn. It appears thyroid hormone may exert its effects through increasing osteogenesis. Targets isolated suggest a possible interaction for those gene products associated with calvarial suture growth and homeostasis as well as craniosynostosis. © 2013 Cray et al

    An examination of the temporal and geographical patterns of psychiatric emergency service use by multiple visit patients as a means for their early detection

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background:</p> <p>Frequent users of the psychiatric emergency service (PES) place a heavy burden upon the mental health care delivery system. The aim of this study was to identify distinct temporal or geographical patterns of PES use by these patients as potential markers for their early detection.</p> <p>Methods:</p> <p>Diagnostic profiles were obtained for patients making an intermediate (4 to 10) or a high (11 or more) number of visits to a general hospital PES in Montreal (Canada) between 1985 and 2004. Between-group comparisons were made with regards to several parameters. These included the time intervals between consecutive visits, visit clustering (single, repeating, and the time interval to the first cluster) and visits made to three other services where data was similarly acquired from 2002 to 2004.</p> <p>Results:</p> <p>The two multiple visit groups differed with regards to diagnostic profiles and actual time between consecutive visits (significantly shorter in patients with 11 or more visits). Patients with 11 or more visits were more likely to have a single cluster (3 or more visits/3 months) or repeating clusters (4 visits/3 months) in their patterns of use. Personality disorders were more prevalent in patients with single clusters as they were, along with schizophrenia, in those with repeating clusters. In addition, clusters were found to occur sufficiently early so as to be potentially useful as markers for early detection. Ten percent of those with 11 or more visits and 16% of those with an intermediate number of visits frequented at least one other PES. A small number of patients, primarily those with substance abuse, made over 50% of their visits to other services.</p> <p>Conclusion:</p> <p>Temporal and geographical patterns of use differed significantly between the multiple visit groups. These patterns, combined with distinct diagnostic profiles, could potentially lead to the more rapid identification and treatment of specific sub-groups of multiple visit patients.</p

    New Measurement of Parity Violation in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering and Implications for Strange Form Factors

    We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from the proton. The result is A = -15.05 +- 0.98(stat) +- 0.56(syst) ppm at the kinematic point theta_lab = 12.3 degrees and Q^2 = 0.477 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement implies that the value for the strange form factor (G_E^s + 0.392 G_M^s) = 0.025 +- 0.020 +- 0.014, where the first error is experimental and the second arises from the uncertainties in electromagnetic form factors. This measurement is the first fixed-target parity violation experiment that used either a `strained' GaAs photocathode to produce highly polarized electrons or a Compton polarimeter to continuously monitor the electron beam polarization.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Tex, elsart.cls; revised version as accepted for Phys.     Phenotypic Variation and Bistable Switching in Bacteria

    Microbial research generally focuses on clonal populations. However, bacterial cells with identical genotypes frequently display different phenotypes under identical conditions. This microbial cell individuality is receiving increasing attention in the literature because of its impact on cellular differentiation, survival under selective conditions, and the interaction of pathogens with their hosts. It is becoming clear that stochasticity in gene expression in conjunction with the architecture of the gene network that underlies the cellular processes can generate phenotypic variation. An important regulatory mechanism is the so-called positive feedback, in which a system reinforces its own response, for instance by stimulating the production of an activator. Bistability is an interesting and relevant phenomenon, in which two distinct subpopulations of cells showing discrete levels of gene expression coexist in a single culture. In this chapter, we address techniques and approaches used to establish phenotypic variation, and relate three well-characterized examples of bistability to the molecular mechanisms that govern these processes, with a focus on positive feedback.
