    Nanoengineered magnetic-field-induced superconductivity

    The perpendicular critical fields of a superconducting film have been strongly enhanced by using a nanoengineered lattice of magnetic dots (dipoles) on top of the film. Magnetic-field-induced superconductivity is observed in these hybrid superconductor / ferromagnet systems due to the compensation of the applied field between the dots by the stray field of the dipole array. By switching between different magnetic states of the nanoengineered field compensator, the critical parameters of the superconductor can be effectively controlled.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Geosynthetic landfill cap stability: comparison of limit equilibrium, computational limit analysis and finite-element analyses

    The stability of the veneer cover soil (landfill cap) is an important issue in landfill design. Incorrect design of the landfill cap can lead to failure, which may result in the veneer cover soil sliding on an underlying geosynthetic layer, or in tension failure of the geosynthetic itself. Previous limit equilibrium (LE) analyses of veneer cover layer stability presented in the literature have generally considered whole-slope failure. In this paper, modified LE equations are proposed that (a) encompass more critical cases of localised slope failure for specific cases, and (b) are calibrated against two other methods: 2-D computational limit analysis (CLA) using LimitState:GEO and 2-D elasto-plastic finite-element (FE) analysis using PLAXIS. The scenarios examined encompass a cover of uniform thickness, a buttressed cover, a cover of tapered thickness, the effects of seepage forces, and the effects of construction equipment. It is shown that the LE method provides a reasonable estimate of veneer cover layer stability for most cases examined, although it is in general non-conservative, relative to the CLA and FE analyses. Local failure was found to be critical in the case of the construction equipment, buttress and horizontal seepage scenarios. In the latter case the LE equations previously presented in the literature significantly overestimate stability compared with the LE, CLA and FE analyses considered in this paper

    Superconducting crossed correlations in ferromagnets: implications for thermodynamics and quantum transport

    It is demonstrated that non local Cooper pairs can propagate in ferromagnetic electrodes having an opposite spin orientation. In the presence of such crossed correlations, the superconducting gap is found to depend explicitly on the relative orientation of the ferromagnetic electrodes. Non local Cooper pairs can in principle be probed with dc-transport. With two ferromagnetic electrodes, we propose a ``quantum switch'' that can be used to detect correlated pairs of electrons. With three or more ferromagnetic electrodes, the Cooper pair-like state is a linear superposition of Cooper pairs which could be detected in dc-transport. The effect also induces an enhancement of the ferromagnetic proximity effect on the basis of crossed superconducting correlations propagating along domain walls.Comment: 4 pages, RevTe

We apply the description to two possible experiments: (i) to a device containing a large quantum dot inserted in a crossed Andreev reflection circuit.     Torpor and hibernation are powerful strategies enabling animals to survive periods of low resource availability. The state of torpor results from an active and drastic reduction of an individual's metabolic rate (MR) associated with a relatively pronounced decrease in body temperature. To date, several forms of torpor have been described in all three mammalian subclasses, i.e., monotremes, marsupials, and placentals, as well as in a few avian orders. This review highlights some of the characteristics, from the whole organism down to cellular and molecular aspects, associated with the torpor phenotype. The first part of this review focuses on the specific metabolic adaptations of torpor, as it is used by many species from temperate zones. This notably includes the endocrine changes involved in fat- and food-storing hibernating species, explaining biomedical implications of MR depression. We further compare adaptive mechanisms occurring in opportunistic vs. seasonal heterotherms, such as tropical and sub-tropical species. Such comparisons bring new insights into the metabolic origins of hibernation among tropical species, including resistance mechanisms to oxidative stress. The second section of this review emphasizes the mechanisms enabling heterotherms to protect their key organs against potential threats, such as reactive oxygen species, associated with the torpid state. We notably address the mechanisms of cellular rehabilitation and protection during torpor and hibernation, with an emphasis on the brain, a central organ requiring protection during torpor and recovery. Also, a special focus is given to the role of an ubiquitous and readily-diffusing molecule, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), in protecting against ischemia-reperfusion damage in various organs over the torpor-arousal cycle and during the torpid state. We conclude that (i) the flexibility of torpor use as an adaptive strategy enables different heterothermic species to substantially suppress their energy needs during periods of severely reduced food availability, (ii) the torpor phenotype implies marked metabolic adaptations from the whole organism down to cellular and molecular levels, and (iii) the torpid state is associated with highly efficient rehabilitation and protective mechanisms ensuring the continuity of proper bodily functions. Comparison of mechanisms in monotremes and marsupials is warranted for understanding the origin and evolution of mammalian torpor

    Spin accumulation induced resistance in mesoscopic ferromagnet/ superconductor junctions

    We present a description of spin-polarized transport in mesoscopic ferromagnet-superconductor (F/S) systems, where the transport is diffusive, and the interfaces are transparent. It is shown that the spin reversal associated with Andreev reflection generates an excess spin density close to the F/S interface, which leads to a spin contact resistance. Expressions for the contact resistance are given for two terminal and four terminal geometries.     Drug vaping applied to cannabis: Is "Cannavaping" a therapeutic alternative to marijuana?

    Therapeutic cannabis administration is increasingly used in Western countries due to its positive role in several pathologies. Dronabinol or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) pills, ethanolic cannabis tinctures, oromucosal sprays or table vaporizing devices are available but other cannabinoids forms can be used. Inspired by the illegal practice of dabbing of butane hashish oil (BHO), cannabinoids from cannabis were extracted with butane gas, and the resulting concentrate (BHO) was atomized with specific vaporizing devices. The efficiency of "cannavaping," defined as the "vaping" of liquid refills for e-cigarettes enriched with cannabinoids, including BHO, was studied as an alternative route of administration for therapeutic cannabinoids. The results showed that illegal cannavaping would be subjected to marginal development due to the poor solubility of BHO in commercial liquid refills (especially those with high glycerin content). This prevents the manufacture of liquid refills with high BHO concentrations adopted by most recreational users of cannabis to feel the psychoactive effects more rapidly and extensively. Conversely, "therapeutic cannavaping" could be an efficient route for cannabinoids administration because less concentrated cannabinoids-enriched liquid refills are required. However, the electronic device marketed for therapeutic cannavaping should be carefully designed to minimize potential overheating and contaminant generation

    Neural correlates of lexical stress processing in a foreign free-stress language

    Introduction The paper examines the discrimination of lexical stress contrasts in a foreign language from a neural perspective. The aim of the study was to identify the areas associated with word stress processing (in comparison with vowel processing), when listeners of a fixed-stress language have to process stress in a foreign free-stress language. Methods We asked French-speaking participants to process stress and vowel contrasts in Spanish, a foreign language that the participants did not know. Participants performed a discrimination task on Spanish word pairs differing either with respect to word stress (penultimate or final stressed word) or with respect to the final vowel while functional magnetic resonance imaging data was acquired. Results Behavioral results showed lower accuracy and longer reaction times for discriminating stress contrasts than vowel contrasts. The contrast Stress > Vowel revealed an increased bilateral activation of regions shown to be associated with stress processing (i.e., supplementary motor area, insula, middle/superior temporal gyrus), as well as a stronger involvement of areas related to more domain-general cognitive control functions (i.e., bilateral inferior frontal gyrus). The contrast Vowel > Stress showed an increased activation in regions typically associated with the default mode network (known for decreasing its activity during attentionally more demanding tasks). Conclusion When processing Spanish stress contrasts as compared to processing vowel contrasts, native listeners of French activated to a higher degree anterior networks including regions related to cognitive control. They also show a decrease in regions related to the default mode network. These findings, together with the behavioral results, reflect the higher cognitive demand, and therefore, the larger difficulties, for French-speaking listeners during stress processing as compared to vowel processing
