In the Romanesque basilica S. Michele in Pavia there is a silver foil Crucifix that dates back to the XII century. During a precise restoration work carried out in 2003 the material was analyzed in order to obtain more precise information. In particular the analysis focused on the filling materials under the silver foil and on the characterization of their resins, which, according to the results, are colophony and beeswax. The filling material for the head is very probably the original one and its binder is wax, the filler of the body is different and very probably it was reintroduced during one of the previous restoration works on the crucifix, of which unfortunately we know nothing

Fucino palaeo-lake: Towards the Palaeoenvironmental history of the last 430 Ka

© 2010 AIQUA - Associazione Italiana per lo Studio del Quaternario e EMMEVI - Servizio Congressi SPA. The sedimentary succession deposited in Fucino palaeo-lake potentially records the environmental history of the Central Mediterranean Region continuously since the early Pleistocene and up to recent historical times. Fucino palaeo-lake sediments are interbedded with numerous volcanic ash layers which allow the reconstruction a robust and independent chronological framework of past environment changes. This framework is a fundamental tool to synchronise different archives at a regional and extra-regional scale and to better understand the spatio-temporal climate variability in the Quaternary at the orbital and millennial-scales. Here we present new preliminary data for the last five glacial to interglacial cycles

    The italian quaternary volcanism

The peninsular and insular Italy are punctuated by Quaternary volcanoes and their rocks constitute an important aliquot of the Italian Quaternary sedimentary successions. Also away from volcanoes themselves, volcanic ash layers are a common and frequent feature of the Quaternary records, which provide us with potential relevant stratigraphic and chronological markers at service of a wide array of the Quaternary science issues. In this paper, a broad representation of the Italian volcano logical community has joined to provide an updated comprehensive state of art of the Italian Quaternary volcanism. The eruptive history, style and dynamics and, in some cases, the hazard assessment of about thirty Quaternary volcanoes, from the north ernmost Mt. Amiata, in Tuscany, to the southernmost Pantelleria and Linosa, in Sicily Channel, are here reviewed in the light of the substantial improving of the methodological approaches and the overall knowledge achieved in the last decades in the vol canological field study. We hope that the present review can represent a useful and agile document summarising the knowledege on the Italian volcanism at the service of the Quaternary community operating in central Mediterranean area

    Simulation of Human Edonic Choiches

Using neural networls we have simulated a human subjective choice of taste employing as input chemical data and as output the taster's choice of a panel test about the quality of wines and oils. The nets, after training cycles with a few examples, were able to give responses to the quality of all samples with little percentage judgement difference compared to each taster and related to the average Panel's judgement. The nets worked out sets of weights that give out new information showing and quantifying the relevance of each set of input data for the individual taster's choice
