Star-forming galaxies at very high redshifts
Analysis of the deepest available images of the sky, obtained by the Hubble
Space Telescope, reveals a large number of candidate high-redshift galaxies. A
catalogue of 1,683 objects is presented, with estimated redshifts ranging from
to . The high-redshift objects are interpreted as regions of star
formation associated with the progenitors of present-day normal galaxies at

Derrick's theorem beyond a potential
Scalar field theories with derivative interactions are known to possess
solitonic excitations, but such solitons are generally unsatisfactory because
the effective theory fails precisely where nonlinearities responsible for the
solitons are important. A new class of theories possessing (internal) galilean
invariance can in principle bypass this difficulty. Here, we show that these
galileon theories do not possess stable solitonic solutions. As a by-product,
we show that no stable solitons exist for a different class of derivatively
coupled theories, describing for instance the infrared dynamics of superfluids,
fluids, solids and some k-essence models.Comment: 4 page
Easing Legal News Monitoring with Learning to Rank and BERT
While ranking approaches have made rapid advances in the Web search, systems that cater to the complex information needs in professional search tasks are not widely developed, common issues and solutions typically rely on dedicated search strategies backed by ad-hoc retrieval models. In this paper we present a legal search problem where professionals monitor news articles with constant queries on a periodic basis. Firstly, we demonstrate the effectiveness of using traditional retrieval models against the Boolean search of documents in chronological order. In an attempt to capture the complex information needs of users, a learning to rank approach is adopted with user specified relevance criteria as features. This approach, however, only achieves mediocre results compared to the traditional models. However, we find that by fine-tuning a contextualised language model (e.g. BERT), significantly improved retrieval performance can be achieved, providing a flexible solution to satisfying complex information needs without explicit feature engineering
Changing situational contexts present a constant challenge to software developers.
A software process can take many forms and its optimality demands that it should be harmonised with the needs of the given software development situational context. This theoretical proposition is reasonably clear. However, the finer details of the interaction between the software process and the factors of the situational context are much less obvious. In previously published research, the authors have elaborated a reference framework that identifies the factors of a situational context that affect the software process [1]. In this paper, we report on the application of our reference framework in an examination of the changing nature of software development situational contexts. Our corresponding study of fifteen software development companies indicates that certain factors appear more subject to change than others. This finding is a potentially important insight that can help us with the recurring challenge of adapting the software process to changing circumstances

Maintenance treatment with interferon for advanced ovarian cancer: results of the Northern and Yorkshire gynaecology group randomised phase III study
A randomised phase III trial was conducted to assess the role of interferon-alpha (INFα) 2a as maintenance therapy following surgery and/or chemotherapy in patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma. Patients were randomised following initial surgery/chemotherapy to interferon-alpha 2a as 4.5 mega-units subcutaneously 3 days per week or to no further treatment. A total of 300 patients were randomised within the study between February 1990 and July 1997. No benefit for interferon maintenance was seen in terms of either overall or clinical event-free survival. We conclude that INF-α is not effective as a maintenance therapy in the management of women with ovarian cancer. The need for novel therapeutics or strategies to prevent the almost inevitable relapse of patients despite increasingly effective surgery and chemotherapy remains
ReadNet: A Hierarchical Transformer Framework for Web Article Readability Analysis
Analyzing the readability of articles has been an important sociolinguistic
task. Addressing this task is necessary to the automatic recommendation of
appropriate articles to readers with different comprehension abilities, and it
further benefits education systems, web information systems, and digital
libraries. Current methods for assessing readability employ empirical measures
or statistical learning techniques that are limited by their ability to
characterize complex patterns such as article structures and semantic meanings
of sentences. In this paper, we propose a new and comprehensive framework which
uses a hierarchical self-attention model to analyze document readability. In
this model, measurements of sentence-level difficulty are captured along with
the semantic meanings of each sentence. Additionally, the sentence-level
features are incorporated to characterize the overall readability of an article
with consideration of article structures. We evaluate our proposed approach on
three widely-used benchmark datasets against several strong baseline
approaches. Experimental results show that our proposed method achieves the
state-of-the-art performance on estimating the readability for various web

Elongation, rooting and acclimatization of micropropagated shoots from mature material of hybrid larch
Factors were defined for elongation, rooting and acclimatization of micropropagated shoots of Larix x eurolepis Henry initiated from short shoot buds of plagiotropic stecklings serially propagated for 9 years from an 8-year-old tree. Initiation and multiplication were on Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) medium supplemented with 5 μM 6-benzyladenine (BA) and 1 μM indole-butyric acid (IBA). Stem elongation was obtained in 36% of the shoots on SH medium containing 0.5 μM BA and 63% of the remaining non-elongated shoots initiated stem elongation after transfer on SH medium devoid of growth regulators. Rooting involved 2 steps: root induction on Campbell and Durzan mineral salts and Murashige and Skoog organic elements, both half-strength (CD-MS/2), supplemented with 1 μM of both naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and IBA, and root elongation following transfer to CD-MS/2 medium devoid of growth regulators. Repeating this 2-step sequence yielded up to 67% rooted shoots. Acclimatization of plantlets ranged from 83% to 100%.
