Species diversity of the deep-water gulper sharks (Squaliformes: Centrophoridae: Centrophorus) in North Atlantic waters - current status and taxonomic issues
The gulper sharks (genus Centrophorus) are a group of deep-water benthopelagic sharks with a worldwide distribution. The alpha taxonomy of the group has historically been problematic and the number of species included in the genus has varied considerably over the years and is still under debate. Gulper sharks are routinely caught in mid- and deep-water fisheries worldwide and some have shown a considerable decline in abundance in the last few decades. Clear and consistent species discrimination of Centrophorus is essential for an efficient and sustainable management of these fisheries resources. Our study used molecular cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences and morphometric data to re-evaluate the diversity of Centrophorus in North Atlantic waters, including the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean Seas. Molecular data separated North Atlantic Centrophorus into five well-supported groups whereas morphometric data separated these same five groups and suggested three additional groups for which no molecular data were available. Four of the five groups identified in the North Atlantic also occur in the Indian and/or Pacific Oceans, thus extending the reported range of some species considerably. A species identification key for North Atlantic Centrophorus is provided based on our findings. (c) 2014 The Linnean Society of Londo

Practices participating in a dental PBRN have substantial and advantageous diversity even though as a group they have much in common with dentists at large
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Practice-based research networks offer important opportunities to move recent advances into routine clinical practice. If their findings are not only generalizable to dental practices at large, but can also elucidate how practice characteristics are related to treatment outcome, their importance is even further elevated. Our objective was to determine whether we met a key objective for The Dental Practice-Based Research Network (DPBRN): to recruit a diverse range of practitioner-investigators interested in doing DPBRN studies.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>DPBRN participants completed an enrollment questionnaire about their practices and themselves. To date, more than 1100 practitioners from the five participating regions have completed the questionnaire. The regions consist of: Alabama/Mississippi, Florida/Georgia, Minnesota, Permanente Dental Associates, and Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden). We tested the hypothesis that there are statistically significant differences in key characteristics among DPBRN practices, based on responses from dentists who participated in DPBRN's first network-wide study (n = 546).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were statistically significant, substantive regional differences among DPBRN-participating dentists, their practices, and their patient populations.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although as a group, participants have much in common with practices at large; their substantial diversity offers important advantages, such as being able to evaluate how practice differences may affect treatment outcomes, while simultaneously offering generalizability to dentists at large. This should help foster knowledge transfer in both the research-to-practice and practice-to-research directions.</p

Fluoroquinolones and isoniazid-resistant tuberculosis: implications for the 2018 WHO guidance.
INTRODUCTION: 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the treatment of isoniazid (H)-resistant (Hr) tuberculosis recommend a four-drug regimen: rifampicin (R), ethambutol (E), pyrazinamide (Z) and levofloxacin (Lfx), with or without H ([H]RZE-Lfx). This is used once Hr is known, such that patients complete 6 months of Lfx (≥6[H]RZE-6Lfx). This cohort study assessed the impact of fluoroquinolones (Fq) on treatment effectiveness, accounting for Hr mutations and degree of phenotypic resistance. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 626 Hr tuberculosis patients notified in London, 2009-2013. Regimens were described and logistic regression undertaken of the association between regimen and negative regimen-specific outcomes (broadly, death due to tuberculosis, treatment failure or disease recurrence). RESULTS: Of 594 individuals with regimen information, 330 (55.6%) were treated with (H)RfZE (Rf=rifamycins) and 211 (35.5%) with (H)RfZE-Fq. The median overall treatment period was 11.9 months and median Z duration 2.1 months. In a univariable logistic regression model comparing (H)RfZE with and without Fqs, there was no difference in the odds of a negative regimen-specific outcome (baseline (H)RfZE, cluster-specific odds ratio 1.05 (95% CI 0.60-1.82), p=0.87; cluster NHS trust). Results varied minimally in a multivariable model. This odds ratio dropped (0.57, 95% CI 0.14-2.28) when Hr genotype was included, but this analysis lacked power (p=0.42). CONCLUSIONS: In a high-income setting, we found a 12-month (H)RfZE regimen with a short Z duration to be similarly effective for Hr tuberculosis with or without a Fq. This regimen may result in fewer adverse events than the WHO recommendations
Cosmology of the selfaccelerating third order Galileon
In this paper we start from the original formulation of the galileon model
with the original choice for couplings to gravity. Within this framework we
find that there is still a subset of possible Lagrangians that give
selfaccelerating solutions with stable spherically symmetric solutions. This is
a certain constrained subset of the third order galileon which has not been
explored before. We develop and explore the background cosmological evolution
of this model drawing intuition from other even more restricted galileon
models. The numerical results confirm the presence of selfacceleration, but
also reveals a possible instability with respect to galileon perturbations.Comment: 30 pages, 24 figure
Shark Attacks in Dakar and the Cap Vert Peninsula, Senegal: Low Incidence despite High Occurrence of Potentially Dangerous Species
The International Shark Attack File mentions only four unprovoked shark attacks on the coast of West Africa during the period 1828–2004, an area where high concentrations of sharks and 17 species potentially dangerous to man have been observed. To investigate if the frequency of shark attacks could be really low and not just under-reported and whether there are potentially sharks that might attack in the area, a study was carried out in Dakar and the Cap Vert peninsula, Senegal. and 3 with unidentified sharks.These findings suggest that the frequency of shark attacks on the coast of West Africa is underestimated. However, they also indicate that the risk is very low despite the abundance of sharks. In Dakar area, most encounters along the coastline with potentially dangerous species do not result in an attack. Compared to other causes of water related deaths, the incidence of shark attack appears negligible, at least one thousand fold lower
Galileon Higgs vortices
Vortex solutions are topologically stable field configurations that can play
an important role in condensed matter, field theory, and cosmology. We
investigate vortex configuration in a 2+1 dimensional Abelian Higgs theory
supplemented by higher order derivative self-interactions, related with
Galileons. Our vortex solutions have features that make them qualitatively
different from well-known Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen configurations, since the
derivative interactions turn on gauge invariant field profiles that break axial
symmetry. By promoting the system to a 3+1 dimensional string configuration, we
study its gravitational backreaction. Our results are all derived within a
specific, analytically manageable system, and might offer indications for
understanding Galileonic interactions and screening mechanisms around
configurations that are not spherically symmetric, but only at most
