AbstractVISIONS and VISIONS–OLYMPICS are European projects funded by the European Commission that aim to increase the European competitive advantage by tapping into the unspoiled/unbiased creative minds of the young generation. The main objectives are to offer out of the box concepts and ideas for the future of European maritime transport and develop these ideas within an environment where purpose driven innovation is cultivated and performed in a risk free environment. The objectives include building bridges and enhancing coordination between EU research networks and strengthen the partnership between research Universities and industry. The network also enhances the skills of future employees in a highly competitive environment and offers targeted dissemination to industry. The paper offers an overview on the results of the student competition which was an integral part of both projects for the past 5 years and demonstrates how the new generation of Engineers and Naval Architects with the support of the European Commission may have inspired the industry in adopting visionary concepts for future vessels and floating structures

The Impact of Brexit Related Events on European and US Exchange Rates

On June 23rd, 2016, the British public voted to leave the European-Union in a highly contested referendum. The purpose of this thesis is to gain an understanding of whether ‘Brexit’ associated events and announcements had an impact on the US Dollar/Euro, British Pound/Euro and US Dollar/British Pound exchange rates. 69 Brexit associated events or announcements were identified for the study from 1st January 2013 to 31st December 2017. Using a univariate analysis (two-sample t-test in combination with a Levene-test of equal variance) as well as a multivariate analysis (OLS regression), the study examines exchange rate changes during a three-day window surrounding the Brexit events: the event day (day (0)), one day prior to the event (day (-1)), and one day after the event (day (+1)). The results of the univariate analysis show that the referendum day had a statistically significant impact on the exchange rates. The multivariate analysis, which controls for interest rates as well as stock market returns in the domestic and foreign country, provides some statistically significant evidence that the Brexit events impacted the US Dollar/Euro exchange rate as well as the British Pound/Euro exchange rate. However, when removing the referendum day from the other event days, we find that the Brexit events had only a statistically significant impact on the British Pound/Euro exchange rate, while the actual referendum had a statistically significant impact on all three exchange rates

ABSTRACT The study was designed to evaluate the effects of pathological ludomania to gambling on Nigerian youth. The study looked at how get-rich-quick mentality, access to gaming, and poverty can lead to gambling ludomania in young people. The Social Learning and Differential Association Theories were debated and chosen as the theoretical framework for the study. A questionnaire created to represent the study\u27s research topics was utilized to collect the study\u27s data. A structured questionnaire was sent to two hundred (200) respondents, who were chosen using a multi-stage sampling procedure. The data were analyzed using simple percentage, descriptive, and chi-square statistical techniques. Findings showed that the main remote causes of young people\u27s gambling ludomania/addiction were poverty, the availability of gaming possibilities, and the get-rich-quick mentality. The researchers suggested that secondary schools, both private and public, should inform their students/pupils about the risks associated with gambling addiction. To stop teenage gambling addiction, the National Lottery Regulatory Commission should ask the National Assembly to raise the legal gaming age from 18 to 25 years. Implications Statement Problems with gambling are a widespread current concern that can have a variety of unfavorable effects. Consequently upon this, there are not many research on the topic as it applies to Bonny youths. The study offers an update on the prevalence, impact on crime-related issues connected to gambling/gaming

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE IN THE CONTEXT OF KNOWLEDGE SOCIETIES AS A TOOL FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

A society properly rooted in indigenous knowledge system can easily pave way for sustainable development. Indigenous knowledge is a local knowledge that is peculiar to a particular society. It is referred to as folk knowledge, people\u27s knowledge, traditional science or traditional wisdom. Over time, indigenous knowledge is usually generated and transmitted by communities, in an attempt to solve their own societal challenges such as ecological and socio-economic problems. Indigenous knowledge is passed from generation to generation, usually by word of mouth and cultural rituals, and has been the basis for agriculture, food preparation and conservation, health care, education, and the wide range of other activities that sustain a society and its environment in different parts of the world for many centuries. This realization that true development cannot take place without member of the society being able to have equal access to knowledge gave birth to the idea of the knowledge society for a sustainable development. Sustainable development emphasized the development in all aspects of human life affecting sustenance. It means resolving the conflict between the various competing goals and the simultaneous pursuit of economic prosperity, environmental quality and social equity with progress as the major objective. The paper also identified the challenges of indigenous knowledge to include funding, time requirement, labour requirement, ICTs etc. Finally, the paper highlighted the strategies to mitigate these challenges; Nigeria libraries should make effort to persuade traditional institutions and elderly who are resource persons in local communities to share their indigenous knowledge with librarians for proper documentation, preservation and accessibility; Libraries should as a matter of urgency repackage the documented indigenous knowledge in different languages for easy access

BACKGROUND: The existence and magnitude of socio-economic inequalities in health-seeking behaviours for child curative care in Egypt and mechanisms underlying these associations have not been comprehensively assessed. This study examined whether socio-economic position (SEP) was associated with health-seeking behaviours for diarrhoea and acute respiratory infection (ARI) in children and explored potential mechanisms underlying these associations using mediation analysis. METHODS: Children aged under-five years living with their mothers sampled by the 2008 Egypt Demographic and Health Survey were used to estimate the prevalence of diarrhoea and ARI in the two-week period preceding the survey. If either illness was reported, three dimensions of health-seeking were examined in adjusted mediation models, separately by illness: whether medical care was sought, whether such care was timely (within one day of symptom onset), and whether it was sought from private providers. Latent variables of parental socio-cultural capital and household-level economic capital were the main exposures of interest. RESULTS: In the sample of 10,006 children, 8.4% had diarrhoea and 7.6% had ARI. Care was sought for 62.0% of children with diarrhoea and 78.5% with ARI; two-thirds of care-seeking for both illnesses was timely. More than 7 in 10 children who sought care were taken to private providers. Socio-cultural capital or economic capital were not independently associated with seeking care for either illness. Socio-cultural capital was positively associated with timely care-seeking, and economic capital was positively associated with private provider use in adjusted analyses for both illnesses. CONCLUSIONS: SEP was not a strong determinant of care-seeking for diarrhoea or ARI, but there was a modest positive effect of SEP on timely receipt of care and private provider use. Further research is needed to explore perceptions of illness severity and the availability and quality of care from public and private providers

Radium-223 chloride: a potential new treatment for castration-resistant prostate cancer patients with metastatic bone disease

Michael R Harrison, Terence Z Wong, Andrew J Armstrong, Daniel J GeorgeDuke Cancer Institute, Durham, NC, USABackground: Radium-223 chloride (223Ra; Alpharadin) is an alpha-emitting radioisotope that targets areas of osteoblastic metastasis and is excreted by the small intestine. When compared with beta-emitters (eg, strontium-89, samarium-153), 223Ra delivers a high quantity of energy per track length with short tissue penetration. Objective: This review describes the mechanism, radiobiology, and preclinical development of 223Ra and discusses the clinical data currently available regarding its safety and efficacy profile. Methods: Data from clinical trials including abstracts were collected and reviewed using the PubMed Database, as well as the American Society of Clinical Oncology abstract database. Conclusion: Current bone-targeted therapies fall into two main categories: antiresorptive agents (eg, zoledronic acid, denosumab), which have been shown to delay skeletal-related events, and radiopharmaceuticals (eg, samarium-153), which may have a role in pain palliation. Historically, neither antiresorptive agents nor radiopharmaceuticals have shown definitive evidence of improved overall survival or other antitumor effects in metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Radiopharmaceuticals are limited by myelosuppresion, thrombocytopenia, and renal excretion. In a recently reported randomized Phase III trial in men with symptomatic bone-metastatic CRPC who had received or were ineligible for docetaxel chemotherapy, 223Ra treatment resulted in improved overall survival and delayed skeletal-related events. Toxicity consisted of minor gastrointestinal side effects and mild neutropenia and thrombocytopenia that were rarely severe. Pending regulatory approval, 223Ra may represent a unique and distinct option for an important subgroup of patients with mCRPC; future trials should address its use in combination or in sequence with existing and novel agents. Keywords: Alpharadin, 223Ra, radium-223, radionuclide therapy, metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer, bone metastase

High Illusion of Control Adolescents: A moderated mediation Analyses of the Effects of Forms of Counterfactual Thinking and Gender in Problem Gambling and Gaming

Abstract Three studies (Study 1, N = 322 male adolescents, Study 2, N = 401 male and female adolescents, and Study 3, longitudinal, N = 56 male and female adolescents) analyzed the effects cognitive and psychographic variables in the relationships among illusion of control (IC), problem gambling and problem gaming. Moderated mediation analyses results using PROCESS macro in the three studies confirmed: (1) the positive mediating effect of upward CFT in the association between IC and problem gambling and problem gaming; (2) the negative mediating effect of downward CFT in the association between IC and problem gambling and problem gaming; and (3) the moderating effect of gender in confirmed mediations. The results highlighted that (1) high levels of IC act as risk factors for problem gambling and gaming that may be boosted by increased upward CFT, and (2) gender and downward CFR act as protective factors, highlighting the protective effect of downward CFT because it buffers the negative effects of IC on adolescent problem gambling and gaming; and (3) problem gambling and problem gaming appears to be similar in manifestation among Nigerian adolescents. Implication statement The finding lend support to the faulty cognition model of problem gambling and gaming, pioneered the moderated-mediation model of problem gambling/gaming correlates in sub-Saharan Africa, and highlight the need for cognitive-based problem gambling/gaming treatment plan focused on checkmating of faulty gambling/gaming cognitions as means of controlling problem gambling/gaming
