A high-performance data structure for mobile information systems
Mobile information systems can now be provided on small form-factor computers. Dictionary-based data compression extends the capabilities of systems with limited processing and memory to enable data intensive applications to be supported in such environments. The nature of judicial sentencing decisions requires that a support system provides accurate and up-to-date data and is compatible with the professional working experience of a judge. The difficulties caused by mobility and the data dependence of the decision-making process are addressed by an Internet-based architecture for collecting and distributing system data.We describe an approach to dictionary-based data compression and the structure of an information system that makes use of this technology

Intra- and Extra-articular Features of Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis in the Cat (Felis catus).
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is an uncommon clinical entity in human and veterinary medicine. However, the condition is severely debilitating and is life-limiting if not treated. This study sought to characterize the intra- and extra-articular features of naturally occurring TMJ ankylosis in cats. TMJs from client-owned cats (n = 5) that underwent bilateral TMJ gap arthroplasty were examined and compared with TMJs from healthy, age-matched feline cadavers (n = 2) by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), micro-computed tomography (μCT) and histologically. Features of bilateral intra- and extra-articular ankylosis compounded by degenerative joint lesions were identified radiographically and histologically in all affected cats. Features of TMJ 'true' ankylosis included variable intracapsular fibro-osseous bridging, degeneration of the disc and the articular surfaces, narrowing of the joint space and flattening of the condylar process of the mandible. Extra-articular features of TMJ ankylosis included periarticular bone formation and fibro-osseous bridging between the mandible, zygomatic arch and coronoid process. In addition, subchondral bone loss or sclerosis, irregular and altered joint contours and irregularly increased density of the medullary bone characterized the degenerative changes of the osseous components of the TMJ. Complex radiological and histological features of both ankylosis and pseudoankylosis were identified that clinically manifested in complete inability to open the mouth

Spin fluctuations with two-dimensional XY behavior in a frustrated S = 1/2 square-lattice ferromagnet
The spin dynamics of the layered square-lattice vanadate Pb2VO(PO4)2 is
investigated by electron spin resonance at various magnetic fields and at
temperatures above magnetic ordering. The linewidth divergence towards low
temperatures seems to agree with isotropic Heisenberg-type spin exchange
suggesting that the spin relaxation in this quasi-two dimensional compound is
governed by low-dimensional quantum fluctuations. However, a weak easy- plane
anisotropy of the g factor points to the presence of a planar XY type of
exchange. Indeed, we found that the linewidth divergence is described best by
XY-like spin fluctuations which requires a single parameter only. Therefore,
ESR-probed spin dynamics could establish Pb2VO(PO4)2 as the first frustrated
square lattice system with XY-inherent spin topological fluctuations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
IR diagnostics of embedded jets: velocity resolved observations of the HH34 and HH1 jets
We present VLT-ISAAC medium resolution spectroscopy of the HH34 and HH1 jets.
Our aim is to derive the kinematics and the physical parameters and to study
how they vary with jet velocity. We use several important diagnostic lines such
as [FeII] 1.644um, 1.600um and H2 2.122um. In the inner jet region of HH34 we
find that both the atomic and molecular gas present two components at high and
low velocity. The [FeII] LVC in HH34 is detected up to large distances from the
source (>1000 AU), at variance with TTauri jets. In H2 2.122um, the LVC and HVC
are spatially separated. We detect, for the first time, the fainter red-shifted
counterpart down to the central source. In HH1, we trace the jet down to ~1"
from the VLA1 driving source: the kinematics of this inner region is again
characterised by the presence of two velocity components, one blue-shifted and
one red-shifted with respect to the source LSR velocity. In the inner HH34 jet
region, ne increases with decreasing velocity. Up to ~10" from the driving
source, and along the whole HH1 jet an opposite behaviour is observed instead,
with ne increasing with velocity. In both jets the mass flux is carried mainly
by the high-velocity gas. A comparison between the position velocity diagrams
and derived electron densities with models for MHD jet launching mechanisms has
been performed for HH34. While the kinematical characteristics of the line
emission at the jet base can be, at least qualitatively, reproduced by both
X-winds and disc-wind models, none of these models can explain the extent of
the LVC and the dependence of electron density with velocity that we observe.
It is possible that the LVC in HH34 represents gas not directly ejected in the
jet but instead denser ambient gas entrained by the high velocity collimated
jet.Comment: A&A accepte
