Objective: The workload and working hours of healthcare professionals have increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to evaluate how COVID-19 outbreak restrictions affect dietary habits among healthcare professionals. Material and Method: The study population was 239 adults aged between 18-65 years. An online survey including questions about demographic variables, health information, lifestyle behaviors, and dietary habits were sent via an online platform. Self-reported weight, and height before and during the pandemic were also collected. Results: The percentage of those who skip the main meals during the lockdown (48.1%) has increased compared to before the lockdown (43.9%). The most skipped main meal and snack were breakfast and mid-morning, respectively. Among the study population, 48.1% reported that they increased their vegetable-fruit consumption, 38.1% reported increased water intake and 45.6% reported consuming more home-cooked food. The most preferred snacks were fruits-vegetables (62.3%), and nuts (55.6%). Approximately half of the participants (46.0%) reported an increased appetite and 50.6% of the participants stated an increase in body weight during COVID-19. The weight gain of the 51-64 age group (3.73±4.13 kg) was statistically significantly higher than the 18-50 age group (0.43±4.51 kg) (p=0.014). The rate of those who reported doing at least 150 minutes of exercise per week before COVID-19 (43.9%) decreased during the pandemic (30.5%). Conclusion: Body weight, appetite, some dietary habits, and physical activities were generally adversely affected among healthcare workers during the pandemic. Older groups are most prone to weight gain during the lockdown. This research was funded by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) 2209-A Projects Funding Program, grant number: 1919B01200108

Objective: This research was conducted to examine the purchasing behavior and food label reading habits of individuals with type 2 diabetes. Material and Method: A total of 162 individuals with type 2 diabetes, who are aged 18 and over and admitted to a public hospital in İzmir, were included in the study. Information on socio-demographic variables, purchasing behavior, and food label reading habits of individuals were collected using a questionnaire. Findings: The mean age of individuals is 60.35±11.26 years. 37.7% of the respondents are men and 62.3% are women. Price (44.5%), previous experiences with the product/brand (28.4%), and manufacturer’s company and brand name (11.7%) are the most influential factors on individuals’ purchasing behavior. The study shows that 72.2% of the individuals never examined the ‘energy and nutrients’ tables on the food labels. Moreover, the majority of diabetics did not know what information should be on the food label (80.9%) and how to use the information on the label (82.1%). The study found that the components that affect individuals’ purchasing behavior most were high sugar content (10.5%), corn syrup glucose syrup content (8.6%) and fructose content (6.8%). Conclusion: The results indicate that most of the diabetic individuals do not read and understand the information on the food labels. Food labels should be understood clearly for their effective use in diabetes management. For this reason, efforts are needed to educate diabetic individuals on the importance of reading food labels

The aim of this review was to assess the effectiveness of specific exercise types on pulmonary functions, aerobic and functional capacity in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). A systematic search of Cochrane Database of Systematic Review, MEDLINE (EBSCO), Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), CINAHL (EBSCO), PUBMED, AMED, EMBASE (OVID) was conducted in January 2016. The outcome measures were spirometric measurements, chest expansion, 6 minute walk distance (6MWD), pVO(2), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI). The search strategy was applied with limitation of date and language and this initial electronic search resulted in 143 relevant studies. After duplicates were removed, the titles and abstracts of 52 articles were screened. Of these, 14 full-text articles met initial criteria and were retrieved for review, with eight studies meeting final inclusion criteria. Both specific and conventional exercise groups showed significant improvements in BASDAI and BASFI scores (p 0.05). Specific exercises are an effective adjuvant therapy to enhance cardiopulmonary functions in patients with AS; therefore, it is assumed that in addition to the medical treatments, specific exercise therapy might reduce the cardiopulmonary complications related with AS

In recent years, the rapidly growing environmental pollution resulting from industrialization and heavy metal derivatives, both in Turkey has started to become the world's common problems. Scientists, who searched for various solutions to solve this problem, have made many studies in terms of removing contamination by developing various membrane processes. In this study, voltage power was utilized and the extraction of ions was ensured thanks to the electrodialytical approach called electromembrane extraction (EME) using a supported liquid membrane (SLM). Celgard 2500 was absorbed into the commercial membrane, Aliquat 336, the quaternary ammonium salt as phase transfer catalyst, and consists of the donor phase K2Cr2O7 (containing 2x10-4 M and 0.1 M HCl) with prepared SLM (containing 2x10-4 M and 0.1 M HCl). Chromium (VI) transport to 0,01 M NaOH solution was examined. The optimum value for chromium (VI) transport is determined as 50 volts 0.3 amperes for 100 minutes of work under 10V - 20V - 30V - 40V - 50V and 60V and 0.3 amperes, respectively. In addition, the same process was applied to Celgard 2400 commercial membrane at 50 volts 0.3 amperes and the experimental data were compared. As a result, the efficiency of Celgard 2500 supported membrane was calculated as 54,73% and the efficiency of Celgard 2400 membrane was found as 34,29%
