Objective: This study aimed to compare the various anthropometric and body composition parameters based on the ethnicity and the absence or presence of menarche.Design: A cross-sectional study with incomplete sampling, using the subject as the evaluation unit.Subjects: the final sample of 550 subjects was composed of 122 Japanese and 179 Caucasian premenarcheal adolescents, and 72 Japanese and 177 Caucasian postmenarcheal adolescents. Methods: the variables of body composition were measured through the following methods: bioelectrical impedance analysis, near-infrared interactance (NIR), Slaughter cutaneous skinfold equations and body mass index. Weight, height and sitting height were also evaluated. Results: the Japanese pre- and postmenarcheal girls presented lower weight and height values when compared with the Caucasian girls. in general, the Japanese premenarcheal girls presented less fat and fat-free mass than the premenarcheal Caucasian girls. This fact was demonstrated through NIR results. Conversely, the Japanese postmenarcheal adolescents accumulated more fat than their Caucasian counterparts. However, significant differences were solely encountered in the values of cutaneous skinfold percent body fat. With regard to menarche, it was verified that, regardless of ethnicity, all the anthropometric and body composition variables reached higher values among postmenarcheal adolescents when compared with premenarcheal adolescents. Conclusion: Different results of weight and height between the ethnic groups may bring back the discussion concerning separate growth curves for different ethnic groups. the results of the body composition analysis indicated high adiposity levels among postmenarcheal adolescents.Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Postgrad Nutr, BR-04020060 São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Prevent Med, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Postgrad Nutr, BR-04020060 São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Prevent Med, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

Causes, consequences and biomarkers of stress in swine: an update

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: In recent decades there has been a growing concern about animal stress on intensive pig farms due to the undesirable consequences that stress produces in the normal physiology of pigs and its effects on their welfare and general productive performance. This review analyses the most important types of stress (social, environmental, metabolic, immunological and due to human handling), and their biological consequences for pigs. The physio-pathological changes associated with stress are described, as well as the negative effects of stress on pig production. In addition an update of the different biomarkers used for the evaluation of stress is provided. These biomarkers can be classified into four groups according to the physiological system or axis evaluated: sympathetic nervous system, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and immune system. CONCLUSIONS: Stress it is a process with multifactorial causes and produces an organic response that generates negative effects on animal health and production. Ideally, a panel of various biomarkers should be used to assess and evaluate the stress resulting from diverse causes and the different physiological systems involved in the stress response. We hope that this review will increase the understanding of the stress process, contribute to a better control and reduction of potential stressful stimuli in pigs and, finally, encourage future studies and developments to better monitor, detect and manage stress on pig farms

No Grupo 3, a avaliação histológica evidenciou fibrose subcapsular e intersticial e regeneração tubular.

Características cefalométricas do padrão face longa Cephalometric characteristics assessment of long face pattern

This study aimed to determine cephalometric characteristics of long face pattern patients in comparison to Class I pattern patients. A total of 73 lateral norm telerradiographs, 34 long face pattern and 39 Class I pattern individuals, were selected and compared with regards to facial morphology, not considering occlusal and sagital relationships. Additionally, evaluations were also made on facial growth pattern, anterior and posterior facial heights, maxillary-mandibular relationship, as well as apical bases relationship and dental characteristics. In short, long face pattern individuals presented a large number of deviations compared to Class I pattern individuals, dysplasia being due to a disproportion among vertical components. It was observed that the values of variables TAFH, LAFH, TAFHperp, LAFHperp, 1-PP, 6-PP, 1-MP, SNB, ANB, goniac angle, mandibular plane angle, and the proportions among the facial heights were significantly altered in long face pattern individuals. Based on the results obtained from the present study, it has been verified that those individuals were characterized by the vertical growth pattern and by an increase of anterior and inferior facial height, the deformity being located below the palatal plane. It was also possible to verify a maxillary and mandibular retrognathism, as well as the presence of anterior (upper and lower) and posterosuperior dental extrusion, with apical incisors in apical base, and linguoclinated lower incisors
