Progress towards an improved Precambrian seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve

The secular trend of seawater strontium isotope ratio (87Sr/86Sr) reflects changes in the relative contributions of continental versus mantle reservoirs to ocean composition, and informs global tectonic events, weathering rates and biogeochemical cycling through Earth history. However, the Precambrian seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve is known in far less detail than its Phanerozoic counterpart. For this study, we compiled 2249 strontium isotope ratios of Precambrian marine sedimentary rocks published since 2002, alongside previously compiled older data. Here we evaluate the uncertainty of all published data for constraining coeval seawater 87Sr/86Sr using four criteria (depositional environment, diagenetic alteration, age constraint and dissolution method). The resultant seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve uses mainly ‘high certainty’ data and shows an overall increasing trend from ~0.7005 at c. 3.5 Ga to ≥0.7089 towards the end of the Ediacaran Period. The improved curve shows an earlier deviation of seawater 87Sr/86Sr from the contemporaneous mantle by c. 3.5 Ga, which might reflect the first significant emergence of evolved continental crust related to nascent tectonics. Additionally, the updated curve records two major rises at 2.5-2.2 Ga and 1.9-1.7 Ga in addition to a well-established event at 0.8-0.5 Ga. Despite the relative scarcity of high-certainty data, these two increases are consistent with enhanced continental weathering following the onset of oxidative weathering and assembly of the supercontinent Nuna, respectively. Although confirmation of these two events awaits more high-certainty data, Precambrian seawater 87Sr/86Sr experienced stronger oscillations and better correspondence with supercontinent cycles than previously shown

A new rock-based definition for the Cryogenian Period (circa 720 - 635 Ma)

    Get PDF
The Cryogenian Period was first established in 1988 along with other Precambrian eon, era and period-level subdivisions that were defined numerically by Global Standard Stratigraphic Ages (GSSAs). As absolute age constraints have improved, some of these time intervals no longer bracket adequately the geological event(s), for which they were named. For example, the age discrepancy between the basal Cryogenian GSSA at 850 Ma and the onset of widespread glaciation ca. 717 Ma has rendered the 850 Ma boundary obsolete. The International Commission on Stratigraphy has now formally approved the removal of the Cryogenian GSSA from its International Chronostratigraphic Chart and supports its replacement with a rock-based Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP). The new Cryogenian GSSP will be placed at a globally correlative level that lies stratigraphically beneath the first appearance of widespread glaciation and is assigned in the interim a 'calibrated age' of circa 720 Ma. This new definition for the Tonian/Cryogenian boundary should be used in future publications until a formal Cryogenian GSSP can be ratified. The change marks progress towards establishment of a 'natural' (rock-based) scale for Precambrian time

The Ediacaran ‘Miaohe Member’ of South China: new insights from palaeoredox proxies and stable isotope data

Throughout the Ediacaran Period, variable water-column redox conditions persisted along productive ocean margins due to a complex interplay between nutrient supply and oceanographic restriction. These changing conditions are considered to have influenced early faunal evolution, with marine anoxia potentially inhibiting the development of the ecological niches necessary for aerobic life forms. To understand this link between oxygenation and evolution, the combined geochemical and palaeontological study of marine sediments is preferable. Located in the Yangtze Gorges region of southern China, lagoonal black shales at Miaohe preserve alga and putative metazoans, including Eoandromeda, a candidate total-group ctenophore, thereby providing one example of where integrated study is possible. We present a multi-proxy investigation into water-column redox variability during deposition of these shales (c. 560–551 Ma). For this interval, reactive iron partitioning indicates persistent water-column anoxia, while trace metal enrichments and other geochemical data suggest temporal fluctuations between ferruginous, euxinic and rare suboxic conditions. Although trace metal and total organic carbon values imply extensive basin restriction, sustained trace metal enrichment and δ15Nsed data indicate periodic access to open-ocean inventories across a shallow-marine sill. Lastly, δ13Corg values of between −35‰ and −40‰ allow at least partial correlation of the shales at Miaohe with Member IV of the Doushantuo Formation. This study provides evidence for fluctuating redox conditions in the lagoonal area of the Yangtze platform during late Ediacaran time. If these low-oxygen environments were regionally characteristic, then the restriction of aerobic fauna to isolated environments can be inferred

Stabilization of the coupled oxygen and phosphorus cycles by the evolution of bioturbation

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Nature Research via the DOI in this record Animal burrowing and sediment-mixing (bioturbation) began during the run up to the Ediacaran/Cambrian boundary, initiating a transition between the stratified Precambrian and more well-mixed Phanerozoic sedimentary records, against the backdrop of a variable global oxygen reservoir probably smaller in size than present. Phosphorus is the long-term limiting nutrient for oxygen production via burial of organic carbon, and its retention (relative to carbon) within organic matter in marine sediments is enhanced by bioturbation. Here we explore the biogeochemical implications of a bioturbation-induced organic phosphorus sink in a simple model. We show that increased bioturbation robustly triggers a net decrease in the size of the global oxygen reservoir - the magnitude of which is contingent upon the prescribed difference in carbon to phosphorus ratios between bioturbated and laminated sediments. Bioturbation also reduces steady-state marine phosphate levels, but this effect is offset by the decline in iron-adsorbed phosphate burial that results from a decrease in oxygen concentrations. The introduction of oxygen-sensitive bioturbation to dynamical model runs is sufficient to trigger a negative feedback loop: the intensity of bioturbation is limited by the oxygen decrease it initially causes. The onset of this feedback is consistent with redox variations observed during the early Cambrian rise of bioturbation, leading us to suggest that bioturbation helped to regulate early oxygen and phosphorus cycles. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited. Reconstructing Tonian seawater ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr using calcite microspar

The Tonian Period followed a long interval of relative stasis and led into the climatic extremes and biological radiations of multicellular life during the Cryogenian and Ediacaran Periods, respectively. However, despite its pivotal situation, it remains relatively understudied, in large part due to the lack of robust age constraints. A combination of fossil evidence, radiometric ages, and isotopic constraints reveal that carbonate strata on the North China craton were deposited between ca. 980 and ca. 920 Ma, thereby filling a gap in marine archives. Here we present 87Sr/86Sr data from selected calcite microspar cements, which filled early diagenetic “molar tooth” cracks, along with data from demonstrably well-preserved bulk carbonate samples. These new data show that seawater 87Sr/87Sr rose in stages from ~0.7052 at ca. 980 Ma to ~0.7063 by ca. 920 Ma, after which a return to low values coincided with the eruption of the Dashigou large igneous province across the North China craton. We also present a new Neoproterozoic seawater 87Sr/86Sr curve, which reveals that the general trend toward higher 87Sr/87Sr during the Tonian Period was checked repeatedly by the input of less-radiogenic strontium from a series of eruptive events, both coincident with and prior to the main breakup of Rodinia. The weathering of Tonian volcanic provinces has been linked to higher carbon burial, glaciation, and oxygenation due to the high phosphorus content of flood basalts. Here we show that the weathering of major volcanic provinces affected material fluxes and ocean chemistry much earlier than previously envisaged

Tonian-Cryogenian boundary sections of Argyll, Scotland

The Tonian-Cryogenian System boundary is to be defined at a GSSP (Global Boundary Stratigraphic Section and Point) beneath the first evidence of widespread glaciation. A candidate lies within the Dalradian Supergroup of Scotland and Ireland, which is least deformed and metamorphosed in Argyll, western Scotland. We present new stratigraphic profiles and interpretations from the Isle of Islay and the Garvellach Islands, update the chemostratigraphy of the Appin Group Tonian carbonates underlying the thick (ca. 1. km) glacigenic Port Askaig Formation (PAF) and demonstrate an environmental transition at the contact. The Appin Group forms a regionally extensive, > 4km-thick, succession of limestones, shales and sandstones deposited on a marine shelf. On Islay, the upper part of the lithostratigraphy has been clarified by measuring and correlating two sections containing distinctive stratigraphic levels including molar tooth structure, oolite, stromatolitic dolomite and intraclastic microbial mounds. Significantly deeper erosion at the unconformity at the base of the overlying PAF is demonstrated in the southern section. Carbonate facies show a gradual decline in δ 13 C VPDB from +5 to +2‰ upwards. In NE Garbh Eileach (Garvellach Islands), a continuously exposed section of Appin Group carbonates, 70m thick, here designated the Garbh Eileach Formation (GEF), lies conformably beneath the PAF. The GEF and the GEF-PAF boundary relationships are re-described with new sedimentological logs, petrological and stable isotope data. Interstratified limestone and dolomicrosparite with δ 13 C of -4 to -7‰ (a feature named the Garvellach anomaly, replacing the term Islay anomaly) are overlain by dolomite in which the isotope signature becomes weakly positive (up to +1‰) upwards. Shallow subtidal conditions become peritidal upwards, with evidence of wave and storm activity. Gypsum pseudomorphs and subaerial exposure surfaces are common near the top of the GEF. The basal diamictite (D1) of the PAF is rich in carbonate clasts similar to slightly deeper-water parts of the underlying succession. D1 is typically several metres thick with interstratified sandstone and conglomerate, but dies out laterally. Scattered siliciclastic coarse sandstone to pebble conglomerate with dropstones associated with soft-sediment deformation is interbedded with carbonate below and above D1. Dolomite beds with derived intraclasts and gypsum pseudomorphs are found above D1 (or equivalent position, where D1 is absent).Published and new Sr isotope studies, including successive leach data, demonstrate primary Tonian 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values of 0.7066-0.7069 on Islay, decreasing to 0.7064-0.7066 in the younger GEF limestones on the Garvellachs, with 1700-2700ppmSr. Other typically Tonian characteristics of the carbonates are the Sr-rich nature of limestones, molar tooth structure, and dolomitized peritidal facies with evidence of aridity. Seabed surveys suggesting uniformly-dipping strata and shallow borehole core material illustrate the potential for extending the Tonian record offshore of the Garvellachs.A candidate Tonian-Cryogenian GSSP is proposed on Garbh Eileach within the smooth δ 13 C profile at the cross-over to positive δ 13 C signatures, 4m below the first occurrence of ice-rafted sediment and 9m below the first diamictite. Although lacking radiometric constraints or stratigraphically significant biotas or biomarkers, the Scottish succession has a thick and relatively complete sedimentary record of glaciation, coherent carbon and strontium chemostratigraphy, lateral continuity of outcrops and 100% exposure at the proposed boundary interval

Selenium isotope evidence for progressive oxidation of the Neoproterozoic biosphere

    Get PDF
Neoproterozoic (1,000–542 Myr ago) Earth experienced profound environmental change, including ‘snowball’ glaciations, oxygenation and the appearance of animals. However, an integrated understanding of these events remains elusive, partly because proxies that track subtle oceanic or atmospheric redox trends are lacking. Here we utilize selenium (Se) isotopes as a tracer of Earth redox conditions. We find temporal trends towards lower δ82/76Se values in shales before and after all Neoproterozoic glaciations, which we interpret as incomplete reduction of Se oxyanions. Trends suggest that deep-ocean Se oxyanion concentrations increased because of progressive atmospheric and deep-ocean oxidation. Immediately after the Marinoan glaciation, higher δ82/76Se values superpose the general decline. This may indicate less oxic conditions with lower availability of oxyanions or increased bioproductivity along continental margins that captured heavy seawater δ82/76Se into buried organics. Overall, increased ocean oxidation and atmospheric O2 extended over at least 100 million years, setting the stage for early animal evolution

Expression of IMP1 Enhances Production of Murine Leukemia Virus Vector by Facilitating Viral Genomic RNA Packaging

    Get PDF
Murine leukemia virus (MLV)-based retroviral vector is widely used for gene transfer. Efficient packaging of the genomic RNA is critical for production of high-titer virus. Here, we report that expression of the insulin-like growth factor II mRNA binding protein 1 (IMP1) enhanced the production of infectious MLV vector. Overexpression of IMP1 increased the stability of viral genomic RNA in virus producer cells and packaging of the RNA into progeny virus in a dose-dependent manner. Downregulation of IMP1 in virus producer cells resulted in reduced production of the retroviral vector. These results indicate that IMP1 plays a role in regulating the packaging of MLV genomic RNA and can be used for improving production of retroviral vectors

Association between XPF Polymorphisms and Cancer Risk: A Meta-Analysis

    Get PDF
Background: Xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group F (XPF or ERCC4) plays a key role in DNA repair that protects against genetic instability and carcinogenesis. A series of epidemiological studies have examined associations between XPF polymorphisms and cancer risk, but the findings remain inconclusive. Methodology/Principal Findings: In this meta-analysis of 47,639 cancer cases and 51,915 controls, by searching three electronic databases (i.e., MEDLINE, EMBASE and CNKI), we summarized 43 case-control studies from 29 publications on four commonly studied polymorphisms of XPF (i.e., rs1800067, rs1799801, rs2020955 and rs744154), and we did not find statistical evidence of any significant association with overall cancer risk. However, in stratification analyses, we found a significant association of XPF-rs1799801 with a reduced cancer risk in Caucasian populations (4,845 cases and 5,556 controls; recessive model: OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.76–1.00, P = 0.049, P = 0.723 for heterogeneity test, I2 = 0). Further genotype-phenotype correlation analysis showed that the homozygous variant CC genotype carriers had higher XPF expression levels than that of the TT genotype carriers (Student’s t test for a recessive model: P = 0.046). No publication bias was found by using the funnel plot and Egger’s test. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggests a lack of statistical evidence for the association between the four XPF SNPs and overall risk of cancers. However, XPF-rs1799801 may be associated with cancer risk in Caucasian populations, which needs to be further validated in single large, well-designed prospective studies
