Two ways to solve ASEP
The purpose of this article is to describe the two approaches to compute
exact formulas (which are amenable to asymptotic analysis) for the probability
distribution of the current of particles past a given site in the asymmetric
simple exclusion process (ASEP) with step initial data. The first approach is
via a variant of the coordinate Bethe ansatz and was developed in work of Tracy
and Widom in 2008-2009, while the second approach is via a rigorous version of
the replica trick and was developed in work of Borodin, Sasamoto and the author

Appointments, pay and performance in UK boardrooms by gender
This article uses UK data to examine issues regarding the scarcity of women in boardroom positions. The article examines appointments, pay and any associated productivity effects deriving from increased diversity. Evidence of gender-bias in the appointment of women as non-executive directors is found together with mixed evidence of discrimination in wages or fees paid. However, the article finds no support for the argument that gender diverse boards enhance corporate performance. Proposals in favour of greater board diversity may be best structured around the moral value of diversity, rather than with reference to an expectation of improved company performance
Metal enrichment processes
There are many processes that can transport gas from the galaxies to their
environment and enrich the environment in this way with metals. These metal
enrichment processes have a large influence on the evolution of both the
galaxies and their environment. Various processes can contribute to the gas
transfer: ram-pressure stripping, galactic winds, AGN outflows, galaxy-galaxy
interactions and others. We review their observational evidence, corresponding
simulations, their efficiencies, and their time scales as far as they are known
to date. It seems that all processes can contribute to the enrichment. There is
not a single process that always dominates the enrichment, because the
efficiencies of the processes vary strongly with galaxy and environmental

Cold Gas in Cluster Cores
I review the literature's census of the cold gas in clusters of galaxies.
Cold gas here is defined as the gas that is cooler than X-ray emitting
temperatures (~10^7 K) and is not in stars. I present new Spitzer IRAC and MIPS
observations of Abell 2597 (PI: Sparks) that reveal significant amounts of warm
dust and star formation at the level of 5 solar masses per year. This rate is
inconsistent with the mass cooling rate of 20 +/- 5 solar masses per year
inferred from a FUSE [OVI] detection.Comment: 10 pages, conference proceeding
Modeling Adaptation Effects in fMRI Analysis
The standard general linear model (GLM) for rapid event-related fMRI design protocols typically ignores reduction in hemodynamic responses in successive stimuli in a train due to incomplete recovery from the preceding stimuli. To capture this adaptation effect, we incorporate a region-specific adaptation model into GLM. The model quantifies the rate of adaptation across brain regions, which is of interest in neuroscience. Empirical evaluation of the proposed model demonstrates its potential to improve detection sensitivity. In the fMRI experiments using visual and auditory stimuli, we observed that the adaptation effect is significantly stronger in the visual area than in the auditory area, suggesting that we must account for this effect to avoid bias in fMRI detection
