Myers' type theorems and some related oscillation results
In this paper we study the behavior of solutions of a second order
differential equation. The existence of a zero and its localization allow us to
get some compactness results. In particular we obtain a Myers' type theorem
even in the presence of an amount of negative curvature. The technique we use
also applies to the study of spectral properties of Schroedinger operators on
complete manifolds.Comment: 16 page

<![CDATA[Within the genus Listeria, the species L. monocytogenes most frequently causes disease in animals and humans. L. Seeligeri, a species recently described, has been considered experimentally nonpathogenic so far. The authors report the first case of human infection in a previously healthy adult presenting with acute purulent meningitis due to L. seeligeri. The patient recovered promptly after a course of ampicillin and gentamicin, but developed severe neurological sequelae (epilepsy, hydrocephalus) one year after the acute episode. The pathogenic properties of this isolate were investigated in two experimental animal models and the results were as follows. The clinical isolate of L. seeligeri was able to colonize the spleens of adult mice without bacterial multiplication, in contrast to the type strain of L. seeligeri (no colonization) and to a L. monocytogenes strain (colonization and multiplication). Previous infection of adult mice with the clinical L. seeligeri isolate protected moderately against spleen colonization and bacterial multiplication after challenge with L. monocytogenes. No lethal effect was observed after inoculation of suckling mice with the clinical L. seeligeri isolate, in contrast to L. monocytogenes strains. Thus, L. seeligeri, previously described as experimentally nonpathogenic for mice, may in fact be a heterogeneous species regarding its pathogenicity, and include strains that may cause life-threatening diseases in humans
Further restrictions on the topology of stationary black holes in five dimensions
We place further restriction on the possible topology of stationary
asymptotically flat vacuum black holes in 5 spacetime dimensions. We prove that
the horizon manifold can be either a connected sum of Lens spaces and "handles"
, or the quotient of by certain finite groups of
isometries (with no "handles"). The resulting horizon topologies include Prism
manifolds and quotients of the Poincare homology sphere. We also show that the
topology of the domain of outer communication is a cartesian product of the
time direction with a finite connected sum of 's
and 's, minus the black hole itself. We do not assume the existence of
any Killing vector beside the asymptotically timelike one required by

A Higher Dimensional Stationary Rotating Black Hole Must be Axisymmetric
A key result in the proof of black hole uniqueness in 4-dimensions is that a
stationary black hole that is ``rotating''--i.e., is such that the stationary
Killing field is not everywhere normal to the horizon--must be axisymmetric.
The proof of this result in 4-dimensions relies on the fact that the orbits of
the stationary Killing field on the horizon have the property that they must
return to the same null geodesic generator of the horizon after a certain
period, . This latter property follows, in turn, from the fact that the
cross-sections of the horizon are two-dimensional spheres. However, in
spacetimes of dimension greater than 4, it is no longer true that the orbits of
the stationary Killing field on the horizon must return to the same null
geodesic generator. In this paper, we prove that, nevertheless, a higher
dimensional stationary black hole that is rotating must be axisymmetric. No
assumptions are made concerning the topology of the horizon cross-sections
other than that they are compact. However, we assume that the horizon is
non-degenerate and, as in the 4-dimensional proof, that the spacetime is

On the `Stationary Implies Axisymmetric' Theorem for Extremal Black Holes in Higher Dimensions
All known stationary black hole solutions in higher dimensions possess
additional rotational symmetries in addition to the stationary Killing field.
Also, for all known stationary solutions, the event horizon is a Killing
horizon, and the surface gravity is constant. In the case of non-degenerate
horizons (non-extremal black holes), a general theorem was previously
established [gr-qc/0605106] proving that these statements are in fact generally
true under the assumption that the spacetime is analytic, and that the metric
satisfies Einstein's equation. Here, we extend the analysis to the case of
degenerate (extremal) black holes. It is shown that the theorem still holds
true if the vector of angular velocities of the horizon satisfies a certain
"diophantine condition," which holds except for a set of measure zero.Comment: 30pp, Latex, no figure
A realisation of Lorentz algebra in Lorentz violating theory
A Lorentz non-invariant higher derivative effective action in flat spacetime,
characterised by a constant vector, can be made invariant under infinitesimal
Lorentz transformations by restricting the allowed field configurations. These
restricted fields are defined as functions of the background vector in such a
way that background dependance of the dynamics of the physical system is no
longer manifest. We show here that they also provide a field basis for the
realisation of Lorentz algebra and allow the construction of a Poincar\'e

Thermodynamic and gravitational instability on hyperbolic spaces
We study the properties of anti--de Sitter black holes with a Gauss-Bonnet
term for various horizon topologies (k=0, \pm 1) and for various dimensions,
with emphasis on the less well understood k=-1 solution. We find that the zero
temperature (and zero energy density) extremal states are the local minima of
the energy for AdS black holes with hyperbolic event horizons. The hyperbolic
AdS black hole may be stable thermodynamically if the background is defined by
an extremal solution and the extremal entropy is non-negative. We also
investigate the gravitational stability of AdS spacetimes of dimensions D>4
against linear perturbations and find that the extremal states are still the
local minima of the energy. For a spherically symmetric AdS black hole
solution, the gravitational potential is positive and bounded, with or without
the Gauss-Bonnet type corrections, while, when k=-1, a small Gauss-Bonnet
coupling, namely, \alpha << {l}^2 (where l is the curvature radius of AdS
space), is found useful to keep the potential bounded from below, as required

G\"odel Incompleteness and the Black Hole Information Paradox
Semiclassical reasoning suggests that the process by which an object
collapses into a black hole and then evaporates by emitting Hawking radiation
may destroy information, a problem often referred to as the black hole
information paradox. Further, there seems to be no unique prediction of where
the information about the collapsing body is localized. We propose that the
latter aspect of the paradox may be a manifestation of an inconsistent
self-reference in the semiclassical theory of black hole evolution. This
suggests the inadequacy of the semiclassical approach or, at worst, that
standard quantum mechanics and general relavity are fundamentally incompatible.
One option for the resolution for the paradox in the localization is to
identify the G\"odel-like incompleteness that corresponds to an imposition of
consistency, and introduce possibly new physics that supplies this
incompleteness. Another option is to modify the theory in such a way as to
prohibit self-reference. We discuss various possible scenarios to implement
these options, including eternally collapsing objects, black hole remnants,
black hole final states, and simple variants of semiclassical quantum gravity.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures; revised according to journal requirement
Mass Parameterizations and Predictions of Isotopic Observables
We discuss the accuracy of mass models for extrapolating to very asymmetric
nuclei and the impact of such extrapolations on the predictions of isotopic
observables in multifragmentation. We obtain improved mass predictions by
incorporating measured masses and extrapolating to unmeasured masses with a
mass formula that includes surface symmetry and Coulomb terms. We find that
using accurate masses has a significant impact on the predicted isotopic

Comparisons of Statistical Multifragmentation and Evaporation Models for Heavy Ion Collisions
The results from ten statistical multifragmentation models have been compared
with each other using selected experimental observables. Even though details in
any single observable may differ, the general trends among models are similar.
Thus these models and similar ones are very good in providing important physics
insights especially for general properties of the primary fragments and the
multifragmentation process. Mean values and ratios of observables are also less
sensitive to individual differences in the models. In addition to
multifragmentation models, we have compared results from five commonly used
evaporation codes. The fluctuations in isotope yield ratios are found to be a
good indicator to evaluate the sequential decay implementation in the code. The
systems and the observables studied here can be used as benchmarks for the
