Imaging Observations of Quasi-Periodic Pulsatory Non-Thermal Emission in Ribbon Solar Flares
Using RHESSI and some auxiliary observations we examine possible connections
between spatial and temporal morphology of the sources of non-thermal hard
X-ray (HXR) emission which revealed minute quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs)
during the two-ribbon flares on 2003 May 29 and 2005 January 19. Microwave
emission also reveals the same quasi-periodicity. The sources of non-thermal
HXR emission are situated mainly inside the footpoints of the flare arcade
loops observed by the TRACE and SOHO instruments. At least one of the sources
moves systematically both during the QPP-phase and after it in each flare that
allows to examine the sources velocities and the energy release rate via the
process of magnetic reconnection. The sources move predominantly parallel to
the magnetic inversion line or the appropriate flare ribbon during the
QPP-phase whereas the movement slightly changes to more perpendicular regime
after the QPPs. Each QPP is emitted from its own position. It is also seen that
the velocity and the energy release rate don't correlate well with the flux of
the HXR emission calculated from the sources. The sources of microwaves and
thermal HXRs are situated near the apex of the loop arcade and are not
stationary either. Almost all QPPs and some spikes of HXR emission during the
post-QPP-phase reveal the soft-hard-soft spectral behavior indicating separate
acts of electrons acceleration and injection, rather than modulation of
emission flux by some kinds of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations of
coronal loops. In all likelihood, the flare scenarios based on the successively
firing arcade loops are more preferable to interpret the observations, although
we can not conclude exactly what mechanism forces these loops to flare up.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figure
Prominence seismology using small amplitude oscillations
Quiescent prominences are thin slabs of cold, dense plasma embedded in the
much hotter and rarer solar corona. Although their global shape is rather
irregular, they are often characterised by an internal structure consisting of
a large number of thin, parallel threads piled together. Prominences often
display periodic disturbances mostly observed in the Doppler displacement of
spectral lines and with an amplitude typically of the order of or smaller than
2--3 km s, a value which seems to be much smaller than the
characteristic speeds of the prominence plasma (namely the Alfv\'en and sound
velocities). Two particular features of these small amplitude prominence
oscillations is that they seem to damp in a few periods and that they seem not
to affect the whole prominence structure. In addition, in high spatial
resolution observations, in which threads can be discerned, small amplitude
oscillations appear to be clearly associated to these fine structure
constituents. Prominence seismology tries to bring together the results from
these observations (e.g. periods, wavelengths, damping times) and their
theoretical modeling (by means of the magnetohydrodynamic theory) to gain
insight into physical properties of prominences that cannot be derived from
direct observation. In this paper we discuss works that have not been described
in previous reviews, namely the first seismological application to solar
prominences and theoretical advances on the attenuation of prominence
oscillations

The Hubble PanCET Program: A Featureless Transmission Spectrum for WASP-29b and Evidence of Enhanced Atmospheric Metallicity on WASP-80b
We present a uniform analysis of transit observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope of two warm gas giants orbiting K-type stars-WASP-29b and WASP-80b. The transmission spectra, which span 0.4-5.0 μm, are interpreted using a suite of chemical equilibrium PLATON atmospheric retrievals. Both planets show evidence of significant aerosol opacity along the day-night terminator. The spectrum of WASP-29b is flat throughout the visible and near-infrared, suggesting the presence of condensate clouds extending to low pressures. The lack of spectral features hinders our ability to constrain the atmospheric metallicity and C/O ratio. In contrast, WASP-80b shows a discernible, albeit muted H2O absorption feature at 1.4 μm, as well as a steep optical spectral slope that is caused by fine-particle aerosols and/or contamination from unocculted spots on the variable host star. WASP-80b joins the small number of gas-giant exoplanets that show evidence for enhanced atmospheric metallicity: The transmission spectrum is consistent with metallicities ranging from a1/430-100 times solar in the case of cloudy limbs to a few hundred times solar in the cloud-free scenario. In addition to the detection of water, we infer the presence of CO2 in the atmosphere of WASP-80b based on the enhanced transit depth in the Spitzer 4.5 μm bandpass. From a complementary analysis of Spitzer secondary eclipses, we find that the dayside emission from WASP-29b and WASP-80b is consistent with brightness temperatures of 937 ± 48 and 851 ± 14 K, respectively, indicating relatively weak day-night heat transport and low Bond albedo. © 2022. Can land use changes alter carbon, nitrogen and major ion transport in subtropical brazilian streams? Modificações no uso da terra podem alterar o transporte fluvial de carbono, nitrogênio e íons maiores?
Several studies in tropical watersheds have evaluated the impact of urbanization and agricultural practices on water quality. In Brazil, savannas (known regionally as Cerrados) represent 23% of the country's surface, representing an important share to the national primary growth product, especially due to intense agriculture. The purpose of this study is to present a comprehensive evaluation, on a yearly basis, of carbon, nitrogen and major ion fluxes in streams crossing areas under different land use (natural vegetation, sugar cane and eucalyptus) in a savanna region of SE Brazil. Eucalyptus and sugar cane alter the transport of the investigated elements in small watersheds. The highest concentration of all parameters (abiotic parameters, ions, dissolved organic carbon DOC - and dissolved inorganic carbon - DIC) were found in Sugar Cane Watersheds (SCW). The observed concentrations of major cations in Eucalyptus Watersheds (EW) (Mg, Ca, K, Na), as well as DIN and DOC, were found frequently to be intermediate values between those of Savanna Watersheds (SW) and SCW, suggesting a moderate impact of eucalyptus plantations on the streamwater. Same trends were found in relation to ion and nutrient fluxes, where the higher values corresponded to SCW. It is suggested that sugar cane plantations might be playing an important role in altering the chemistry of water bodies.<br>Diversos estudos têm sido desenvolvidos em bacias de drenagem tropicais no intuito de avaliar o impacto da urbanização e das práticas agrícolas na qualidade dos corpos d'água. No Brasil, as savanas (conhecidas regionalmente como Cerrado) representam 23% do território brasileiro, sendo uma região importante no crescimento nacional, especialmente devido às intensas atividades agrícolas. A finalidade deste trabalho é apresentar uma avaliação dos fluxos de carbono, nitrogênio e principais íons em córregos com diferentes usos do solo (vegetação, cana de açúcar e eucalipto) em uma região de Cerrado, SE Brasil. A cana de açúcar e o eucalipto alteram o transporte dos elementos investigados nessas pequenas bacias de drenagem. As concentrações mais elevadas de todos os parâmetros analisados (parâmetros abióticos, íons, carbono orgânico dissolvido e carbono inorgânico dissolvido) foram encontradas na bacia de cana de açúcar (SCW). As concentrações observadas para os cátions na bacia do eucalipto (EW) (Mg, Ca, K, Na), assim como Carbono Inorgânico Dissolvido (CID) e Carbono Orgânico Dissolvido (COD), apresentaram valores intermediários entre as bacias do Cerrado e da cana de açúcar, sugerindo um impacto moderado dessa plantação aos corpos d'água. Mesma tendência foi observada para os fluxos de íons e nutrientes, sendo, novamente, os maiores valores encontrados na bacia de cana-de-açúcar.
