    Improved leave scheduling algorithm for improved service delivery in the Nigerian university system

    This work presents a leave management solution where leave requests by University academic staff are processed with service delivery centered yardsticks like staff mix by rank and lecturer-to-student ratio. This leave management solution is intended to interface with a staff database, course registration system and a staff appraisal system. In working mechanism, it is an algorithm that assesses leave requests and schedules the leave requested for periods having least impact on staff mix by rank and lecturer-to-students ratio. In the Nigerian university system, leave can be managed to avail academic staff for training, research and even rest. In pursuance of these, human resource planners may overcommit staff to it, leaving the system understaffed at key moments, or under commit to it and lose out on the benefits. Either way, service delivery is adversely affected. The algorithm was developed following iterative incremental process model, in three increments, each executing their corresponding set of requirements. The algorithm was implemented using MATLAB. The work features generation of sample data of academic staff in a particular engineering degree program, sorting of that data into staff mix by rank, and then computation of available and recommended staff mix by rank given the number of students the engineering program has. The algorithm schedules leave for periods of least impact on service delivery of University academic staff by picking the year with the least shortfall in available staff mix considering the recommended staff mix.Keywords: Staff mix by rank, Leave management, Lecturer-to-students ratio, Human Resource Plannin

    A novel bifunctional oxygen GDE for alkaline secondary batteries

    AbstractThis paper describes a novel procedure for the fabrication of a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) suitable for use as a bifunctional oxygen electrode in alkaline secondary batteries. The electrode is fabricated by pre-forming a PTFE-bonded nickel powder layer on a nickel foam substrate followed by deposition of NiCo2O4 spinel electrocatalyst by dip coating in a nitrate solution and thermal decomposition. The carbon-free composition avoids concerns over carbon corrosion at the potentials for oxygen evolution. The electrode shows acceptable overpotentials for both oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction at current densities up to 100mAcm−2. Stable performance during >100 successive, 1h oxygen reduction/evolution cycles at a current density of 20mAcm−2 in 8M NaOH at 333K was achieved

    A methodology for the measurement of radiated noise from marine piling

    This paper describes a methodology that has been developed for measuring marine piling noise, which is designed to record the temporal, spatial and spectral characteristics of the radiated sound field. Results are presented for measurements of two pile diameters, 2m and 4.74m, in a shallow water site off the east coast of the UK. Measurements of the entire piling sequence for several piles were conducted at ranges from 10 m to 22 km for piles in 10-20 m water depth. To assess variations in the temporal, spatial and spectral characteristics, a number of recording systems were simultaneously deployed at various ranges and depths, allowing the full piling sequence to be measured. This allowed assessment of source level variation at fixed locations, and the effect of propagation within the water column

    Iberian late-Variscan granitoids: Some considerations on crustal sources and the significance of “mantle extraction ages

    A suite of post-tectonic granitoids (mostly peraluminous, broadly I-type granodiorites and monzogranites) and mafic rocks from NWIberia with crystallization ages between ca. 309 and 290 Ma has been investigated for Sm–Nd isotopes and inherited zircon content in order to constrain the nature of their source rocks. εNd values (at 300 Ma) vary from −0.2 to −5.9 and TDM values range from 1.01 to 1.58 Ga. Inherited (xenocrystic) zircons yielded ages ranging from 458 to 676 Ma, with 90% of data between 490 and 646 Ma, corresponding to Neoproterozoic(mostly Ediacaran), Cambrian andOrdovician ages. Only three highlydiscordant analyses yielded ages older than 650 Ma. Based on the data reported herein and relevant data fromthe literaturewe contend that post-tectonic granitoids of the Iberian Variscan Belt (with exception of the scarce anatectic S-type granitoids) were derived mostly from metaigneous lower crustal sources which in turn were ultimately derived from a subcontinental lithospheric mantle enriched between ca. 0.9 and 1.1 Ga. I-type granitoids and mantle-derived mafic rocks both underwent varying degrees of contamination by ametasedimentary lower crust depleted in pre-650 Ma zircon (through previousmelting episodes) with a time-integrated Sm–Nd evolution different to that of the metaigneous lower crust. Participation of this metasedimentary crust in the genesis of these granitoids may account for Nd isotopic variability and Nd model ages well in excess of 1.2 Ga

    Randomized controlled trial of intravenous antivenom versus placebo for latrodectism: the second redback antivenom evaluation (RAVE- II) study.

    Objective: Latrodectism is the most important spider envenomation syndrome worldwide. There remains considerable controversy over antivenom treatment. We aimed to investigate whether antivenom resulted in resolution of pain and systemic effects in patients with latrodectism given standardized analgesia. Methods: In a multicentre randomized placebo-controlled trial of redback spider antivenom for latrodectism, 224 patients (>7yr) with a redback spider-bite and severe pain with or without systemic effects were randomized to receive normal saline (placebo) or antivenom, after receiving standardized analgesia. The primary outcome was a clinically significant reduction in pain 2 hours after trial medication compared to baseline. A second primary outcome for the subgroup with systemic features of envenomation was resolution of systemic features at 2 hours. Secondary outcomes were improved pain at 4 and 24 hours, resolution of systemic features at 4 hours, administration of opioid analgesics or unblinded antivenom after 2 hours and adverse reactions. Results: Two hours after treatment, 26/112 patients (23%) from the placebo arm had a clinically significant improvement in pain versus 38/112 (34%) from the antivenom arm (difference in favor of antivenom 10.7%;95%CI:−1.1% to +22.6%;p=0.10). Systemic 2 effects resolved after two hours in 9/41 patients (22%) in the placebo arm and 9/35 (26%) in the antivenom arm (difference 3.8%;95%CI:−15% to +23%;p=0.79). There was no significant difference in any secondary outcome between antivenom and placebo. Acute systemic hypersensitivity reactions occurred in 4/112 (3.6%) patients given antivenom. Conclusions: The addition of antivenom to standardized analgesia in patients with latrodectism, did not significantly improve pain or systemic effects.NHMRC 54522
