The Horizontal Component of Photospheric Plasma Flows During the Emergence of Active Regions on the Sun
The dynamics of horizontal plasma flows during the first hours of the
emergence of active region magnetic flux in the solar photosphere have been
analyzed using SOHO/MDI data. Four active regions emerging near the solar limb
have been considered. It has been found that extended regions of Doppler
velocities with different signs are formed in the first hours of the magnetic
flux emergence in the horizontal velocity field. The flows observed are
directly connected with the emerging magnetic flux; they form at the beginning
of the emergence of active regions and are present for a few hours. The Doppler
velocities of flows observed increase gradually and reach their peak values
4-12 hours after the start of the magnetic flux emergence. The peak values of
the mean (inside the +/-500 m/s isolines) and maximum Doppler velocities are
800-970 m/s and 1410-1700 m/s, respectively. The Doppler velocities observed
substantially exceed the separation velocities of the photospheric magnetic
flux outer boundaries. The asymmetry was detected between velocity structures
of leading and following polarities. Doppler velocity structures located in a
region of leading magnetic polarity are more powerful and exist longer than
those in regions of following polarity. The Doppler velocity asymmetry between
the velocity structures of opposite sign reaches its peak values soon after the
emergence begins and then gradually drops within 7-12 hours. The peak values of
asymmetry for the mean and maximal Doppler velocities reach 240-460 m/s and
710-940 m/s, respectively. An interpretation of the observable flow of

Mutant screen reveals the Piccolo's control over depression and brain-gonad crosstalk
Successful sexual reproduction involves a highly complex, genetically encoded interplay between animal physiology and behavior. Here we developed a screen to identify genes essential for rat reproduction based on an unbiased methodology involving mutagenesis via the Sleeping Beauty transposon. As expected, our screen identified genes where reproductive failure was connected to gametogenesis (Btrc, Pan3, Spaca6, Ube2k) and embryogenesis (Alk3, Exoc6b, Slc1a3, Tmx4, Zmynd8). In addition, our screen identified Atg13 (longevity) Dlg1 and Pclo (neuronal disorders), previously not associated with reproduction. Dominant Pclo traits caused epileptiform activity and affected genes supporting GABAergic synaptic transmission (Gabra6, Gabrg3), and animals exhibited a compromised crosstalk between the brain and gonads via disturbed GnRH signaling. Recessive Pclo traits disrupted conspecific recognition required for courtship/mating and were mapped to allelic markers for major depressive disorder (Grm5, Htr2a, Sorcs3, Negr1, Drd2). Thus, Pclo-deficiency in rats link neural networks controlling sexual motivation to Pclo variants that have been associated with human neurological disorders
A Case-Based Approach to Cross Domain Sentiment Classification
This paper considers the task of sentiment classification of subjective text across many domains, in particular on scenarios where no in-domain data is available. Motivated by the more general applicability of such methods, we propose an extensible approach to sentiment classification that leverages sentiment lexicons and out-of-domain data to build a case-based system where solutions to past cases are reused to predict the sentiment of new documents from an unknown domain. In our approach the case representation uses a set of features based on document statistics, while the case solution stores sentiment lexicons employed on past predictions allowing for later retrieval and reuse on similar documents. The case-based nature of our approach also allows for future improvements since new lexicons and classification methods can be added to the case base as they become available. On a cross domain experiment our method has shown robust results when compared to a baseline single-lexicon classifier where the lexicon has to be pre-selected for the domain in question
Navier-Stokes transport coefficients of -dimensional granular binary mixtures at low density
The Navier-Stokes transport coefficients for binary mixtures of smooth
inelastic hard disks or spheres under gravity are determined from the Boltzmann
kinetic theory by application of the Chapman-Enskog method for states near the
local homogeneous cooling state. It is shown that the Navier-Stokes transport
coefficients are not affected by the presence of gravity. As in the elastic
case, the transport coefficients of the mixture verify a set of coupled linear
integral equations that are approximately solved by using the leading terms in
a Sonine polynomial expansion. The results reported here extend previous
calculations [V. Garz\'o and J. W. Dufty, Phys. Fluids {\bf 14}, 1476 (2002)]
to an arbitrary number of dimensions. To check the accuracy of the
Chapman-Enskog results, the inelastic Boltzmann equation is also numerically
solved by means of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method to evaluate the
diffusion and shear viscosity coefficients for hard disks. The comparison shows
a good agreement over a wide range of values of the coefficients of restitution

A Helicity-Based Method to Infer the CME Magnetic Field Magnitude in Sun and Geospace: Generalization and Extension to Sun-Like and M-Dwarf Stars and Implications for Exoplanet Habitability
Patsourakos et al. (Astrophys. J. 817, 14, 2016) and Patsourakos and
Georgoulis (Astron. Astrophys. 595, A121, 2016) introduced a method to infer
the axial magnetic field in flux-rope coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the
solar corona and farther away in the interplanetary medium. The method, based
on the conservation principle of magnetic helicity, uses the relative magnetic
helicity of the solar source region as input estimates, along with the radius
and length of the corresponding CME flux rope. The method was initially applied
to cylindrical force-free flux ropes, with encouraging results. We hereby
extend our framework along two distinct lines. First, we generalize our
formalism to several possible flux-rope configurations (linear and nonlinear
force-free, non-force-free, spheromak, and torus) to investigate the dependence
of the resulting CME axial magnetic field on input parameters and the employed
flux-rope configuration. Second, we generalize our framework to both Sun-like
and active M-dwarf stars hosting superflares. In a qualitative sense, we find
that Earth may not experience severe atmosphere-eroding magnetospheric
compression even for eruptive solar superflares with energies ~ 10^4 times
higher than those of the largest Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite (GOES) X-class flares currently observed. In addition, the two
recently discovered exoplanets with the highest Earth-similarity index, Kepler
438b and Proxima b, seem to lie in the prohibitive zone of atmospheric erosion
due to interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs), except when they possess planetary magnetic

Ação de fitoreguladores nos teores de macronutrientes em tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)
This research deals with the effects of exogenous growth regulators on mineral nutrition of the tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill, cv. 'Miguel Pereira'). To study the influence on mineral nutrition, (2-chloroethyl) trimethilammonium chloride (CCC), at concentration of 2,000 ppm, succinic acid-2,2-dimethylhydrazide (SADH) (4,000 ppm), gibberellic acid (GA) (100 ppm), (2-chloroethyl) phosphonic acid (CEPA) (200 ppm), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) (100 ppm), and 6-furfurylamino purine (FAP) (500 ppm) were applied. Higher levels of nitrogen, calcium and magnesium occurred in the stem of plants sprayed with CCC. Treatments with FAP. SADH and CEPA demonstrated an increase in nitrogen levels in the stem. CEPA also increased calcium contents in stems. Growth regulators used did not alter the levels of macronutrients in leaves of tomatoes in relation to check plants.Verificaram-se os efeitos da aplicação de reguladores vegetais na nutrição mineral do tomateiro. Para isto aplicaram-se, em plantas com 4 folhas, cloreto de (2-cloroetil) trimetilamônio (CCC) 2.000 ppm, ácido succínico-2,2-dimetilhidrazida (SADH) 4.000 ppm, ácido giberélico (GA) 100 ppm, ácido (2-cloroetil) fosfônico (CEPA) 200 ppm, ácido 3-indolacético (IAA) 100 ppm e 6-furfurilaminopurina (FAP) na concentração de 500 ppm. Níveis mais elevados de nitrogênio, cálcio e magnésio foram determinados nas hastes de plantas pulverizadas com CCC. Tratamento com CEPA promoveu aumento nos teores de nitrogênio e cálcio nas hastes de tomateiro. Níveis mais elevados de nitrogênio foram determinados nas hastes de plantas tratadas com SADH e FAP. Os reguladores de crescimento utilizados não afetaram os níveis de macronutrientes nas folhas do tomateiro com relação às controle
Young and Intermediate-age Distance Indicators
Distance measurements beyond geometrical and semi-geometrical methods, rely
mainly on standard candles. As the name suggests, these objects have known
luminosities by virtue of their intrinsic proprieties and play a major role in
our understanding of modern cosmology. The main caveats associated with
standard candles are their absolute calibration, contamination of the sample
from other sources and systematic uncertainties. The absolute calibration
mainly depends on their chemical composition and age. To understand the impact
of these effects on the distance scale, it is essential to develop methods
based on different sample of standard candles. Here we review the fundamental
properties of young and intermediate-age distance indicators such as Cepheids,
Mira variables and Red Clump stars and the recent developments in their
