    Matroid Online Bipartite Matching and Vertex Cover

    The Adwords and Online Bipartite Matching problems have enjoyed a renewed attention over the past decade due to their connection to Internet advertising. Our community has contributed, among other things, new models (notably stochastic) and extensions to the classical formulations to address the issues that arise from practical needs. In this paper, we propose a new generalization based on matroids and show that many of the previous results extend to this more general setting. Because of the rich structures and expressive power of matroids, our new setting is potentially of interest both in theory and in practice. In the classical version of the problem, the offline side of a bipartite graph is known initially while vertices from the online side arrive one at a time along with their incident edges. The objective is to maintain a decent approximate matching from which no edge can be removed. Our generalization, called Matroid Online Bipartite Matching, additionally requires that the set of matched offline vertices be independent in a given matroid. In particular, the case of partition matroids corresponds to the natural scenario where each advertiser manages multiple ads with a fixed total budget. Our algorithms attain the same performance as the classical version of the problems considered, which are often provably the best possible. We present 1−1/e1-1/e-competitive algorithms for Matroid Online Bipartite Matching under the small bid assumption, as well as a 1−1/e1-1/e-competitive algorithm for Matroid Online Bipartite Matching in the random arrival model. A key technical ingredient of our results is a carefully designed primal-dual waterfilling procedure that accommodates for matroid constraints.     Research on Temperature Field of the Support Structure for the Independent LNG Tank

    The independent LNG (Liquified Nature Gas) containment is widely used for small or medium-sized LNG carrier and ship using LNG as fuels. The common tank pattern includes single-spherical-cylindrical tank and double-spherical-cylindrical tank, which is the key to design the hull structure and its support. The support is designed to connect the hull structure and LNG tank. Its main functions are heat transferring and force loading. This paper focus on the temperature field distribution of hull and its support structure. The thermal boundary conditions are simulated according to the heat transfer action, such as thermal convection, heat conduction and thermal radiation. The method on how to carry out thermal analysis is presented for an independent LNG containment. The case study is carried out with two typical independent LNG tanks. One is a tank with double spherical cylindrical in the LNG carrier, and the other is a tank with single spherical cylindrical on the deck of the ship using LNG as fuels. The result shows the method presented in this paper is a good reference for the structural design with independent LNG containment

    A Group-1 Grass Pollen Allergen Influences the Outcome of Pollen Competition in Maize

    Worldwide, 400 million people suffer from hay fever and seasonal asthma. The major causative agents of these allergies are pollen specific proteins called the group-1 grass pollen allergens. Although details of their antigenicity have been studied for 40 years with an eye towards immunotherapy, their function in the plant has drawn scant attention. Zea m 1 constitutes a class of abundant grass pollen allergens coded for by several genes that loosen the walls of grass cells, including the maize stigma and style. We have examined the impact of a transposon insertion into one of these genes (EXPB1, the most abundant isoform of Zea m 1) on the production of Zea m 1 protein, pollen viability, and pollen tube growth, both in vitro and in vivo. We also examined the effect of the insertional mutation on the competitive ability of the pollen by experimentally varying the sizes of the pollen load deposited onto stigmas using pollen from heterozygous plants and then screening the progeny for the presence of the transposon using PCR. We found that the insertional mutation reduced the levels of Zea m 1 in maize pollen, but had no effect on pollen viability, in vitro pollen tube growth or the proportion of progeny sired when small pollen loads are deposited onto stigmas. However, when large pollen loads are deposited onto the stigmas, the transposon mutation is vastly underrepresented in the progeny, indicating that this major pollen allergen has a large effect on pollen tube growth rates in vivo, and plays an important role in determining the outcome of the pollen-pollen competition for access to the ovules. We propose that the extraordinary abundance (4% of the extractable protein in maize pollen) of this major pollen allergen is the result of selection for a trait that functions primarily in providing differential access to ovules

    Functional Remodeling of Benign Human Prostatic Tissues In Vivo by Spontaneously Immortalized Progenitor and Intermediate Cells

    Tissue remodeling or regeneration is believed to initiate from multipotent stem and progenitor cells. We report here the establishment of two spontaneously immortalized adult non-tumorigenic human prostate epithelial cell lines, NHPrE1 and BHPrE1. NHPrE1 (CD133high/CD44high/OCT4high/PTENhigh) was characterized as a putative progenitor cell, and BHPrE1 (p63high/p53high/p21(WAF1)high/RBhigh) was characterized as a putative epithelial intermediate cell. Genomic analysis demonstrated an abnormal karyotype with genomic rearrangements including PTEN amplification in NHPrE1 and CTNNB1 (β-catenin) amplification in BHPrE1 cells. Embedded three-dimensional culture of NHPrE1 showed greater branching than BHPrE1. A tissue recombination-xenografting model was utilized to compare remodeling of human prostatic tissues in vivo. A series of tissue recombinants, made by mixing different ratios of human prostatic epithelial cells and inductive rat urogenital sinus mesenchyme, were grafted to the renal capsule of severe combined immunodeficient mice. Both cell lines were able to regenerate benign secretory ductal-acinar architecture in vivo, containing intact basal and luminal epithelial layers confirmed by the expression of appropriate CK profiles. Prostate-specific antigen, 15-lipoxygenase-2, androgen receptor, and NKX3.1 proteins were appropriately expressed in the regenerated epithelia. Regeneration of benign prostatic glandular structures could be achieved using as few as 10 NHPrE1 cells, whereas 200,000 BHPrE1 cells were required to achieve prostatic architecture. This suggests a greater proportion of progenitor/stem cells in NHPrE1 than in BHPrE1. These cell lines provide important data on progenitor and intermediate cell phenotypes and represent significant new tools for the elucidation of molecular mechanisms of human prostatic regeneration, pathogenesis, and carcinogenesis

    Maternal Pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index Categories and Infant Birth Outcomes: A Population-Based Study of 9 Million Mother-Infant Pairs

    Background and aims: Infant adverse birth outcomes have been suggested to contribute to neonatal morbidity and mortality and may cause long-term health consequences. Although evidence suggests maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) categories associate with some birth outcomes, there is no consensus on these associations. We aimed to examine the associations of maternal prepregnancy BMI categories with a wide range of adverse birth outcomes.Methods: Data were from a population-based retrospective cohort study of 9,282,486 eligible mother-infant pairs in the U.S. between 2016 and 2018. Maternal prepregnancy BMI was classified as: underweight (2); normal weight (18.5-24.9 kg/m2); overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2); obesity grade 1 (30-34.9 kg/m2); obesity grade 2 (35.0-39.9 kg/m2); and obesity grade 3 (≥40 kg/m2). A total of six birth outcomes of the newborn included preterm birth, low birthweight, macrosomia, small for gestational age (SGA), large for gestational age (LGA), and low Apgar score (5-min score Results: Maternal prepregnancy overweight and obesity increased the likelihood of infant preterm birth, with odds ratios (ORs) (95% CIs) of 1.04 (1.04-1.05) for overweight, 1.18 (1.17-1.19) for obesity grade 1, 1.31 (1.29-1.32) for obesity grade 2, and 1.47 (1.45-1.48) for obesity grade 3, and also for prepregnancy underweight (OR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.30-1.34) after adjusting for all potential covariates. Prepregnancy overweight and obesity were associated with higher odds of macrosomia, with ORs (95% CIs) of 1.53 (1.52-1.54) for overweight, 1.92 (1.90-1.93) for obesity grade 1, 2.33 (2.31-2.35) for obesity grade 2, and 2.87 (2.84-2.90) for obesity grade 3. Prepregnancy overweight and obesity was associated with higher odds of LGA, with ORs (95% CIs) of 1.58 (1.57-1.59) for overweight, 2.05 (2.03-2.06) for obesity grade 1, 2.54 (2.52-2.56) for obesity grade 2, and 3.17 (3.14-3.21) for obesity grade 3. Prepregnancy overweight and obesity were also associated with higher odds of low Apgar score, with ORs (95% CIs) of 1.12 (1.11-1.14) for overweight, 1.21 (1.19-1.23) for obesity grade 1, 1.34 (1.31-1.36) for obesity grade 2, and 1.55 (1.51-1.58) for obesity grade 3.Conclusion: Our findings suggest maintaining or obtaining a healthy body weight for prepregnancy women could substantially reduce the likelihood of important infant adverse birth outcomes.</p
