This study was aimed at: (1) investigating the improvement of students' conceptual understanding of mathematics, (2) investigating the improvement of students' academic language of mathematics, and (3) investigating the response of students toward the implementation of SIOP Model. This research was a classroom action research which was accomplished in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps namely planning, acting, observing and evaluating, and reflecting. The subjects of this research were the tenth-grade students in bilingual class namely X MIA 2 of SMA Negeri Bali Mandara on the second semester of academic year 2016/2017. Data of students' conceptual understanding and academic language of mathematics were collected by conceptual understanding of mathematics tests using essay test on the end of each cycle, while data of students' response toward the implementation of SIOP Model were obtained by questionnaire. Data that had been collected therefore were analyzed descriptively. The results show that students' conceptual understanding and academic language of mathematics improves on each cycle. Students' response toward the implementation of SIOP Model in learning mathematics is on the positive category. This study concludes that the implementation of SIOP Model could improve students' conceptual understanding and students' academic language of mathematics

On the weakly nonlinear, transversal vibrations of a conveyor belt with a low and time-varying velocity

In this paper the weakly nonlinear, transversal vibrations of a conveyor belt will be considered. The belt is assumed to move with a low and time-varying speed. Using Kirchhoff's approach a single equation of motion will be derived from a coupled system of partial differential equations describing the longitudinal and transversal vibrations of the belt. A two time-scales perturbation method is then applied to approximate the solutions of the problem. It will turn out that the frequencies of the belt speed fluctuations play an important role in the dynamic behaviour of the belt. It is well-known in linear systems that instabilities can occur if the frequency of the belt speed uctuations is the sum of two natural frequencies. However, in the weakly nonlinear case as considered in this paper this is no longer true. It turns out that the weak nonlinearity stabilizes the system.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

On the transversal vibrations of a conveyor belt with a low and time-varying velocity: Part I: the string-like case

In this paper initial-boundary value problems for a linear wave (string) equation are considered. These problems can be used as simple models to describe the vertical vibrations of a conveyor belt, for which the velocity is small with respect to the wave speed. In this paper the belt is assumed to move with a time-varying speed. Formal asymptotic approximations of the solutions are constructed to show the complicated dynamical behavior of the conveyor belt. It also will be shown that the truncation method can not be applied to this problem in order to obtain approximations valid on long time scales.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

This study was aimed at : (1) developing an instructional multimedia design for teaching line and angle to the seventh grade students of junior high school; (2) describing  the result of the implementation of the multimedia using GeoGebra as media of  exploration, Camtasia Studio as an application for sound and  video editing, Lectora Inspire as the application for making layout and quiz;(3) finding out the validity of the multimedia for teaching line and angle to the seventh grade students of junior high school. The study used DDD-E model that consists of deciding, design, develop, and evaluate stages. The product was tried out in several stages which were done by instructional materials experts, and students at different schools and used qualitative and descriptive quantitative data analysis techniques.  The result showed that the multimedia for teaching line and angle could be accepted as instructional media with the average score of  43.5 from the instructional material experts falling into valid criterion, and the mean score given by the material experts  was17 falling into valid criterion. The multimedia that has been developed also got a very good response from the students with the average score of 47.63. Based on the result that has been obtained, the multimedia that has been developed as a good qualification and is good for use in the process of teaching the topics of line and angle

This study aims to examine the effect of applying the Concrete Representational Abstract (CRA) approach to mathematical literacy ability in the one variable linear equations system in terms of students' cognitive styles. The data methods were test and questionnaire, test of mathematical literacy ability is used to collect students' mathematical literacy ability and the VVQ questionnaire is used to collect students' cognitive style. Furthermore, the data were analysed with two-way analysis of variance. The results of the analysis showed that the learning approach and cognitive style simultaneously had influenced the students' mathematical literacy. Mathematical literacy ability of students with verbalizer and visualizer cognitive style who followed learning with CRA learning approach were significantly higher than the mathematical literacy ability of students who followed conventional learning. In term of cognitive style, students with verbalizer cognitive style who followed learning with CRA learning approach had higher mathematical literacy ability than students with cognitive visualizer style who followed conventional learning.
