On the Special Significance of the Latest PAMELA Results in Astroparticle Physics
In continuation of their earlier measurements, the PAMELA group reported data
on antiproton flux and ratios in 2010 at much higher energies. In
past we had dealt with these specific aspects of PAMELA data in great detail
and each time we captured the contemporary data-trends quite successfully with
the help of a multiple production model of secondary antiprotons with some
non-standard ilk and with some other absolutely standard assumptions and
approximations. In this work we aim at presenting a comprehensive and valid
description of all the available data on antiproton flux and the nature of
ratios at the highest energies reported so far by the PAMELA
experiment in 2010. The main physical implication of all this would, in the
end, be highlighted.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Topological invariants for spin-orbit coupled superconductor nanowires
We show that a spin-orbit coupled semiconductor nanowire with Zeeman
splitting and s-wave superconductivity is in symmetry class BDI (not D as is
commonly thought) of the topological classification of band Hamiltonians. The
class BDI allows for an integer Z topological invariant equal to the number of
Majorana fermion (MF) modes at each end of the quantum wire protected by the
chirality symmetry (reality of the Hamiltonian). Thus it is possible for this
system (and all other d=1 models related to it by symmetry) to have an
arbitrary integer number, not just 0 or 1 as is commonly assumed, of MFs
localized at each end of the wire. The integer counting the number of MFs at
each end reduces to 0 or 1, and the class BDI reduces to D, in the presence of
terms in the Hamiltonian that break the chirality symmetry.Comment: 4+ pages, no figure
Diamagnetic susceptibility obtained from the six-vertex model and its implications for the high-temperature diamagnetic state of cuprate superconductors
We study the diamagnetism of the 6-vertex model with the arrows as directed
bond currents. To our knowledge, this is the first study of the diamagnetism of
this model. A special version of this model, called F model, describes the
thermal disordering transition of an orbital antiferromagnet, known as
d-density wave (DDW), a proposed state for the pseudogap phase of the high-Tc
cuprates. We find that the F model is strongly diamagnetic and the
susceptibility may diverge in the high temperature critical phase with power
law arrow correlations. These results may explain the surprising recent
observation of a diverging low-field diamagnetic susceptibility seen in some
optimally doped cuprates within the DDW model of the pseudogap phase.Comment: 4.5 pages, 2 figures, revised version accepted in Phys. Rev. Let
Letrozole treatment of pubertal female mice results in activational effects on reproduction, metabolism and the gut microbiome.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in reproductive-aged women that is comprised of two out of the following three features: hyperandrogenism, oligo- or amenorrhea, or polycystic ovaries. In addition to infertility, many women with PCOS have metabolic dysregulation that increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Changes in the gut microbiome are associated with PCOS and gut microbes may be involved in the pathology of this disorder. Since PCOS often manifests in the early reproductive years, puberty is considered to be a critical time period for the development of PCOS. Exposure to sex steroid hormones during development results in permanent, organizational effects, while activational effects are transient and require the continued presence of the hormone. Androgens exert organizational effects during prenatal or early post-natal development, but it is unclear whether androgen excess results in organizational or activational effects during puberty. We recently developed a letrozole-induced PCOS mouse model that recapitulates both reproductive and metabolic phenotypes of PCOS. In this study, we investigated whether letrozole treatment of pubertal female mice exerts organizational or activational effects on host physiology and the gut microbiome. Two months after letrozole removal, we observed recovery of reproductive and metabolic parameters, as well as diversity and composition of the gut microbiome, indicating that letrozole treatment of female mice during puberty resulted in predominantly activational effects. These results suggest that if exposure to excess androgens during puberty leads to the development of PCOS, reduction of androgen levels during this time may improve reproductive and metabolic phenotypes in women with PCOS. These results also imply that continuous letrozole exposure is required to model PCOS in pubertal female mice since letrozole exerts activational rather than organizational effects during puberty
Integro-differential diffusion equation for continuous time random walk
In this paper we present an integro-differential diffusion equation for
continuous time random walk that is valid for a generic waiting time
probability density function. Using this equation we also study diffusion
behaviors for a couple of specific waiting time probability density functions
such as exponential, and a combination of power law and generalized
Mittag-Leffler function. We show that for the case of the exponential waiting
time probability density function a normal diffusion is generated and the
probability density function is Gaussian distribution. In the case of the
combination of a power-law and generalized Mittag-Leffler waiting probability
density function we obtain the subdiffusive behavior for all the time regions
from small to large times, and probability density function is non-Gaussian
distribution.Comment: 12 page
Phase diagram and excitations of a Shiba molecule
We analyze the phase diagram associated with a pair of magnetic impurities
trapped in a superconducting host. The natural interplay between Kondo
screening, superconductivity and exchange interactions leads to a rich array of
competing phases, whose transitions are characterized by discontinuous changes
of the total spin. Our analysis is based on a combination of numerical
renormalization group techniques as well as semi-classical analytics. In
addition to the expected screened and unscreened phases, we observe a new
molecular doublet phase where the impurity spins are only partially screened by
a single extended quasiparticle. Direct signatures of the various Shiba
molecule states can be observed via RF spectroscopy.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
