Modelling the influence of personality and culture on affect and enjoyment in multimedia
Affect is evoked through an intricate relationship between the characteristics of stimuli, individuals, and systems of perception. While affect is widely researched, few studies consider the combination of multimedia system characteristics and human factors together. As such, this paper explores the influence of personality (Five-Factor Model) and cultural traits (Hofstede Model) on the intensity of multimedia-evoked positive and negative affects (emotions). A set of 144 video sequences (from 12 short movie clips) were evaluated by 114 participants from a cross-cultural population, producing 1232 ratings. On this data, three multilevel regression models are compared: a baseline model that only considers system factors; an extended model that includes personality and culture; and an optimistic model in which each participant is modelled. An analysis shows that personal and cultural traits represent 5.6% of the variance in positive affect and 13.6% of the variance in negative affect. In addition, the affect-enjoyment correlation varied across the clips. This suggests that personality and culture play a key role in predicting the intensity of negative affect and whether or not it is enjoyed, but a more sophisticated set of predictors is needed to model positive affect with the same efficacy
Aerodynamic shape optimization of arbitrary hypersonic vehicles
A new method was developed to optimize, in terms of aerodynamic wave drag minimization, arbitrary (nonaxisymmetric) hypersonic vehicles in modified Newtonian flow, while maintaining the initial volume and length of the vehicle. This new method uses either a surface fitted Fourier series to represent the vehicle's geometry or an independent point motion algorithm. In either case, the coefficients of the Fourier series or the spatial locations of the points defining each cross section were varied and a numerical optimization algorithm based on a quasi-Newton gradient search concept was used to determine the new optimal configuration. Results indicate a significant decrease in aerodynamic wave drag for simple and complex geometries at relatively low CPU costs. In the case of a cone, the results agreed well with known analytical optimum ogive shapes. The procedure is capable of accepting more complex flow field analysis codes
AIROscope: Ames infrared balloon-borne telescope
A balloon-borne telescope system designed for astronomical observations at infrared wavelengths is discussed. The telescope is gyro-stabilized with updated pointing information derived from television, star tracker, or ground commands. The television system furnishes both course and fine acquisition after initial orientation using a pair of fluxgate servo compasses. Command and control is by a UHF link with 256 commands available. Scientific and engineering data are telemetered to the ground station via narrow band F.M. in the L band. The ground station displays all scientific, engineering and status information during the flights and records the command and telemetry digital bit stream for detailed analysis. The AIROscope telescope has a 28-inch diameter primary mirror and Dall-Kirkham optics. The beam is modulated by oscillating a secondary mirror at 11 or 25 Hz with provision for left or right beam fixed positions by command
Start-Up Costs in American Research Universities
Our report briefly summarizes findings from the 2002 Cornell Higher Education Research Institute survey of start-up costs at the over 220 universities classified as Research and Doctoral universities by the Carnegie Foundation in 1994. It reports the mean start-up cost packages across institutions for new assistant professors and senior faculty, broken down by institutional type (public/private), Carnegie classification and field (biology, chemistry, engineering, physics and astronomy) and also discuses the sources of funding for start-up costs
SATMC: Spectral Energy Distribution Analysis Through Markov Chains
We present the general purpose spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting
tool SED Analysis Through Markov Chains (SATMC). Utilizing Monte Carlo Markov
Chain (MCMC) algorithms, SATMC fits an observed SED to SED templates or models
of the user's choice to infer intrinsic parameters, generate confidence levels
and produce the posterior parameter distribution. Here we describe the key
features of SATMC from the underlying MCMC engine to specific features for
handling SED fitting. We detail several test cases of SATMC, comparing results
obtained to traditional least-squares methods, which highlight its accuracy,
robustness and wide range of possible applications. We also present a sample of
submillimetre galaxies that have been fitted using the SED synthesis routine
GRASIL as input. In general, these SMGs are shown to occupy a large volume of
parameter space, particularly in regards to their star formation rates which
range from ~30-3000 M_sun yr^-1 and stellar masses which range from
~10^10-10^12 M_sun. Taking advantage of the Bayesian formalism inherent to
SATMC, we also show how the fitting results may change under different
parametrizations (i.e., different initial mass functions) and through
additional or improved photometry, the latter being crucial to the study of
high-redshift galaxies.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepte
Integrated-light Two Micron All Sky Survey infrared photometry of Galactic globular clusters
We have mosaicked Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) images to derive surface brightness profiles in J, H, and K_s for 104 Galactic globular clusters. We fit these with King profiles and show that the core radii are identical to within the errors for each of these IR colors and are identical to the core radii at V in essentially all cases. We derive integrated-light colors V-J, V-H, V-K_s, J-H, and J-Ks for these globular clusters. Each color shows a reasonably tight relation between the dereddened colors and metallicity. Fits to these are given for each color. The IR-IR colors have very small errors, due largely to the all-sky photometric calibration of the 2MASS survey, while the V-IR colors have substantially larger uncertainties. We find fairly good agreement with measurements of integrated-light colors for a smaller sample of Galactic globular clusters by M. Aaronson, M. Malkan, and D. Kleinmann from 1977. Our results provide a calibration for the integrated light of distant single-burst old stellar populations from very low to solar metallicities. A comparison of our dereddened measured colors with predictions from several models of the integrated light of single-burst old populations shows good agreement in the low-metallicity domain for V-K_s colors but also shows an offset at a fixed [Fe/H] of ~0.1 mag in J-K_s, which we ascribe to photometric system transformation issues. Some of the models fail to reproduce the behavior of the integrated-light colors of the Galactic globular clusters near solar metallicity
