    Interplanetary navigation using pulsating radio sources

    Radio beacons with distinguishing signatures exist in nature as pulsating radio sources (pulsars). These objects radiate well determined pulse trains over hundreds of megahertz of bandwidth at radio frequencies. Since they are at known positions, they can also be used as navigation beacons in interplanetary space. Pulsar signals are weak and dispersive when viewed from earth. If an omnidirectional antenna is connected to a wideband receiver (200 MHz bandwidth centered at 200 MHz) in which dispersion effects are removed, nominal spacecraft position errors of 1500 km can be obtained after 24 h of signal integration. An antenna gain of 10 db would produce errors as low as 150 km. Since the spacecraft position is determined from the measurement of the phase of a periodic signal, ambiguities occur in the position measurement. Simultaneous use of current spacecraft navigation schemes eliminates these ambiguities

    Techniques used in the ground based observations of pulsars are described, many of them applicable in a navigation scheme. The arrival times of the pulses intercepting Earth are measured at time intervals from a few days to a few months. Low noise, wide band receivers, amplify signals intercepted by 26 m, 34, and 64 m antennas. Digital recordings of total received signal power versus time are cross correlated with the appropriate pulse template

    The 1971/1973 Mars data set acquired by the Goldstone Solar System Radar was analyzed. It was established that the seasonal variations in radar reflectivity thought to occur in only one locality on the planet (the Solis Lacus radar anomaly) occur, in fact, over the entire subequatorial belt observed by the Goldstone radar. Since liquid water appears to be the most likely cause of the reflectivity excursions, a permanent, year-round presence of subsurface water (frozen or thawed) in the Martian tropics can be inferred

    A procedure used for a ground truth study of a land use map of North Alabama generated from LANDSAT data

    A land use map of a five county area in North Alabama was generated from LANDSAT data using a supervised classification algorithm. There was good overall agreement between the land use designated and known conditions, but there were also obvious discrepancies. In ground checking the map, two types of errors were encountered - shift and misclassification - and a method was developed to eliminate or greatly reduce the errors. Randomly selected study areas containing 2,525 pixels were analyzed. Overall, 76.3 percent of the pixels were correctly classified. A contingency coefficient of correlation was calculated to be 0.7 which is significant at the alpha = 0.01 level. The land use maps generated by computers from LANDSAT data are useful for overall land use by regional agencies. However, care must be used when making detailed analysis of small areas.     A proposed approach to monitor private-sector policies and practices related to food environments, obesity and non-communicable disease prevention

    Private-sector organizations play a critical role in shaping the food environments of individuals and populations. However, there is currently very limited independent monitoring of private-sector actions related to food environments. This paper reviews previous efforts to monitor the private sector in this area, and outlines a proposed approach to monitor private-sector policies and practices related to food environments, and their influence on obesity and non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention. A step-wise approach to data collection is recommended, in which the first (‘minimal’) step is the collation of publicly available food and nutrition-related policies of selected private-sector organizations. The second (‘expanded’) step assesses the nutritional composition of each organization’s products, their promotions to children, their labelling practices, and the accessibility, availability and affordability of their products. The third (‘optimal’) step includes data on other commercial activities that may influence food environments, such as political lobbying and corporate philanthropy. The proposed approach will be further developed and piloted in countries of varying size and income levels. There is potential for this approach to enable national and international benchmarking of private-sector policies and practices, and to inform efforts to hold the private sector to account for their role in obesity and NCD prevention

    Ab initio studies of phonon softening and high pressure phase transitions of alpha-quartz SiO2

    Density functional perturbation theory calculations of alpha-quartz using extended norm conserving pseudopotentials have been used to study the elastic properties and phonon dispersion relations along various high symmetry directions as a function of bulk, uniaxial and non-hydrostatic pressure. The computed equation of state, elastic constants and phonon frequencies are found to be in good agreement with available experimental data. A zone boundary (1/3, 1/3, 0) K-point phonon mode becomes soft for pressures above P=32 GPa. Around the same pressure, studies of the Born stability criteria reveal that the structure is mechanically unstable. The phonon and elastic softening are related to the high pressure phase transitions and amorphization of quartz and these studies suggest that the mean transition pressure is lowered under non-hydrostatic conditions. Application of uniaxial pressure, results in a post-quartz crystalline monoclinic C2 structural transition in the vicinity of the K-point instability. This structure, intermediate between quartz and stishovite has two-thirds of the silicon atoms in octahedral coordination while the remaining silicon atoms remain tetrahedrally coordinated. This novel monoclinic C2 polymorph of silica, which is found to be metastable under ambient conditions, is possibly one of the several competing dense forms of silica containing octahedrally coordinated silicon. The possible role of high pressure ferroelastic phases in causing pressure induced amorphization in silica are discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figs., 8 Table

    There is variability in the attainment of developmental milestones in the CDKL5 disorder

    Background: Individuals with the CDKL5 disorder have been described as having severely impaired development. A few individuals have been reported having attained more milestones including walking and running. Our aim was to investigate variation in attainment of developmental milestones and associations with underlying genotype. Methods: Data was sourced from the International CDKL5 Disorder Database, and individuals were included if they had a pathogenic or probably pathogenic CDKL5 mutation and information on early development. Kaplan-Meier time-to-event analyses investigated the occurrence of developmental milestones. Mutations were grouped by their structural/functional consequence, and Cox regression was used to investigate the relationship between genotype and milestone attainment. Results: The study included 109 females and 18 males. By 5 years of age, only 75% of the females had attained independent sitting and 25% independent walking whilst a quarter of the males could sit independently by 1 year 3 months. Only one boy could walk independently. No clear relationship between mutation group and milestone attainment was present, although females with a late truncating mutation attained the most milestones. Conclusion: Attainment of developmental milestones is severely impaired in the CDKL5 disorder, with the majority who did attain skills attaining them at a late age. It appears as though males are more severely impaired than the females. Larger studies are needed to further investigate the role of genotype on clinical variability
