A combined statistical and dynamical approach for downscaling large-scale footprints of European windstorms
The occurrence of mid-latitude windstorms is related to strong socio-economic effects. For detailed and reliable regional impact studies, large datasets of high-resolution wind fields are required. In this study, a statistical downscaling approach in combination with dynamical downscaling is introduced to derive storm related gust speeds on a high-resolution grid over Europe. Multiple linear regression models are trained using reanalysis data and wind gusts from regional climate model simulations for a sample of 100 top ranking windstorm events. The method is computationally inexpensive and reproduces individual windstorm footprints adequately. Compared to observations, the results for Germany are at least as good as pure dynamical downscaling. This new tool can be easily applied to large ensembles of general circulation model simulations and thus contribute to a better understanding of the regional impact of windstorms based on decadal and climate change projections
‘Mild mannered’? Protest and mobilisation in Portugal under austerity, 2010–2013
Anti-austerity mobilisations in Southern Europe since 2010 have been widely debated in recent times. Commentators have emphasised the emergence of new political subjects such as the ‘precariat’ organised into loose, IT-connected movements. To what extent do these portrayals reflect the underlying dynamics of this protest cycle, and how do these movements interact with traditional political actors? Using Portugal as a case study, this article maps the cycle of anti-austerity contention between 2010 and 2013 to reveal a more complex picture, where traditional actors, including labour unions and left-wing political parties, emerge as key actors, facilitating and sustaining the discontinuous mobilisation of new forms of activism, while seeking to gain access to new constituencies through them.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Ketogenic diet-induced weight loss is associated with an increase in vitamin d levels in obese adults
Vitamin D is an important micronutrient involved in several processes. Evidence has shown a strong association between hypovitaminosis D and cardio-metabolic diseases, including obesity. A ketogenic diet has proven to be very effective for weight loss, especially in reducing fat mass while preserving fat-free mass. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a ketogenic diet-induced weight loss on vitamin D status in a population of obese adults. We enrolled 56 obese outpatients, prescribed with either traditional standard hypocaloric Mediterranean diet (SHMD) or very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD). Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured by chemiluminescence. The mean value of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations in the whole population at baseline was 17.8 +/- 5.6 ng/mL, without differences between groups. After 12 months of dietetic treatment, in VLCKD patients serum 25(OH)D concentrations increased from 18.4 +/- 5.9 to 29.3 +/- 6.8 ng/mL (p < 0.0001), vs 17.5 +/- 6.1 to 21.3 +/- 7.6 ng/mL (p = 0.067) in the SHMD group (for each kilogram of weight loss, 25(OH)D concentration increased 0.39 and 0.13 ng/mL in the VLCKD and in the SHMD groups, respectively). In the VLCKD group, the increase in serum 25(OH)D concentrations was strongly associated with body mass index, waist circumference, and fatty mass variation. In a multiple regression analysis, fatty mass was the strongest independent predictor of serum 25(OH)D concentration, explaining 15.6%, 3.3%, and 9.4% of its variation in the whole population, in SHMD, and VLCKD groups, respectively. We also observed a greater reduction of inflammation (evaluated by high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) values) and a greater improvement in glucose homeostasis, confirmed by a reduction of HOMA values, in the VLCKD versus the SHMD group. Taken together, all these data suggest that a dietetic regimen, which implies a great reduction of fat mass, can improve vitamin D status in the obese
A 'p-n' diode with hole and electron-doped lanthanum manganite
The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite
La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above
which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated
an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is
an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it
exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode.
The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low
temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best of our
knowledge, this is the first report of such a p-n diode, using the polaronic

Inverse Symmetry Breaking in Multi-Scalar Field Theories
We review how the phenomena of inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry
nonrestoration) may arise in the context of relativistic as well as
nonrelativistic multi-scalar field theories. We discuss how the consideration
of thermal effects on the couplings produce different transition patterns for
both theories. For the relativistic case, these effects allow the appearance of
inverse symmetry breaking (and symmetry nonrestoration) at arbitrarily large
temperatures. On the other hand, the same phenomena are suppressed in the
nonrelativistic case, which is relevant for condensed matter physics. In this
case, symmetry nonrestoration does not happen while inverse symmetry is allowed
only to be followed by symmetry restoration characterizing a reentrant phase.
The aim of this paper is to give more insight concerning the, qualitatively
correct, results obtained by using one loop perturbation theory in the

Noncommutative Geometry and Cosmology
We study some consequences of noncommutativity to homogeneous cosmologies by
introducing a deformation of the commutation relation between the
minisuperspace variables. The investigation is carried out for the
Kantowski-Sachs model by means of a comparative study of the universe evolution
in four different scenarios: the classical commutative, classical
noncommutative, quantum commutative, and quantum noncommutative. The comparison
is rendered transparent by the use of the Bohmian formalism of quantum
trajectories. As a result of our analysis, we found that noncommutativity can
modify significantly the universe evolution, but cannot alter its singular
behavior in the classical context. Quantum effects, on the other hand, can
originate non-singular periodic universes in both commutative and
noncommutative cases. The quantum noncommutative model is shown to present
interesting properties, as the capability to give rise to non-trivial dynamics

Concept for a Time-of-Flight Small Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument at the European Spallation Source
A new Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument is proposed for the European
Spallation Source. The pulsed source requires a time-of-flight analysis of the
gathered neutrons at the detector. The optimal instrument length is found to be
rather large, which allows for a polarizer and a versatile collimation. The
polarizer allows for studying magnetic samples and incoherent background
subtraction. The wide collimation will host VSANS and SESANS options that
increase the resolution of the instrument towards um and tens of um,
respectively. Two 1m2 area detectors will cover a large solid angle
simultaneously. The expected gains for this new instrument will lie in the
range between 20 and 36, depending on the assessment criteria, when compared to
up-to-date reactor based instruments. This will open new perspectives for fast
kinetics, weakly scattering samples, and multi-dimensional contrast variation
