Chern-Simons number diffusion in (1+1)-dimensional Higgs theory
We study the Chern-Simons number diffusion rate in the (1+1)-dimensional
latticeAbelian Higgs model at temperatures much higher than, as well as
comparable to, the sphaleron energy. It is found that in the high-temperature
limit the rate is likely to grow as power 2/3 of the temperature. In the
intermediate-temperature regime, our numerical simulations show that very weak
temperature dependence of the rate, found in previous work, persists at smaller
lattice spacings. We discuss possibilities of relating the observed behavior of
the rate to static finite-temperature properties of the model.Comment: 9 pages, LATeX + 4 figures included as postscript files, to be

Coupled-channels effects in elastic scattering and near-barrier fusion induced by weakly bound nuclei and exotic halo nuclei
The influence on fusion of coupling to the breakup process is investigated
for reactions where at least one of the colliding nuclei has a sufficiently low
binding energy for breakup to become an important process. Elastic scattering,
excitation functions for sub-and near-barrier fusion cross sections, and
breakup yields are analyzed for Li+Co. Continuum-Discretized
Coupled-Channels (CDCC) calculations describe well the data at and above the
barrier. Elastic scattering with Li (as compared to Li) indicates
the significant role of breakup for weakly bound projectiles. A study of
He induced fusion reactions with a three-body CDCC method for the
He halo nucleus is presented. The relative importance of breakup and
bound-state structure effects on total fusion is discussed.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure
NonQCD contributions to heavy quark masses and sensitivity to Higgs mass
We find that if the Higgs mass is close to its present experimental lower
limit (100 GeV),Yukawa interactions in the quark-Higgs sector can make
substantial contributions to the heavy quark MS masses.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure. Fixed a few typos (eqs (7),(34)
1RXS J232953.9+062814: A Dwarf Nova with a 64-minute Orbital Period and a Conspicuous Secondary Star
We present spectroscopy and time-series photometry of the newly discovered
dwarf nova 1RXS J232953.9+062814. Photometry in superoutburst reveals a
superhump with a period of 66.06(6) minutes. The low state spectrum shows
Balmer and HeI emission on a blue continuum, and in addition shows a rich
absorption spectrum of type K4 +- 2. The absorption velocity is modulated
sinusoidally at P_orb = 64.176(5) min, with semi-amplitude K = 348(4) km/s. The
low-state light curve is double-humped at this period, and phased as expected
for ellipsoidal variations. The absorption strength does not vary appreciably
around the orbit. The orbital period is shorter than any other cataclysmic
variable save for a handful of helium-star systems and V485 Centauri (59
minutes). The secondary is much hotter than main sequence stars of similar
mass, but is well-matched by helium-enriched models, indicating that the
secondary evolved from a more massive progenitor. A preliminary calculation in
which a 1.2 solar-mass star begins mass transfer near the end of H burning
matches this system's characteristics remarkably well.Comment: accepted to Astrophysical Journal Letters; 14 pages, 3 eps figures +

Sphaleron Transition Rate in Presence of Dynamical Fermions
We investigate the effect of dynamical fermions on the sphaleron transition
rate at finite temperature for the Abelian Higgs model in one spatial
dimension. The fermion degrees of freedom are included through bosonization.
Using a numerical simulation, we find that massless fermions do not change the
rate within the measurement accuracy. Surprisingly, the exponential dependence
of the sphaleron energy on the Yukawa coupling is not borne out by the
transition rate, which shows a very weak dependence on the fermion mass.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX, psfi
Long-term variability of the optical spectra of NGC 4151: I. Light curves and flux correlations
Results of a long-term spectral monitoring of the active galactic nucleus of
NGC 4151 are presented (11 years, from 1996 to 2006). High quality spectra
(S/N>50 in the continuum near Halpha and Hbeta) were obtained in the spectral
range ~4000 to 7500 \AA, with a resolution between 5 and 15 A, using the 6-m
and the 1-m SAO's telescopes (Russia), the GHAO's 2.1-m telescope (Cananea,
Mexico), and the OAN-SPM's 2.1-m telescope (San-Pedro, Mexico). The observed
fluxes of the Halpha, Hbeta, Hgamma and HeII emission lines and of the
continuum at the observed wavelength 5117 A, were corrected for the position
angle, the seeing and the aperture effects.
We found that the continuum and line fluxes varied strongly (up to a factor
6) during the monitoring period. The emission was maximum in 1996-1998, and
there were two minima, in 2001 and in 2005. The Halpha, Hgamma and He II fluxes
were well correlated with the Hbeta flux. We considered three characteristic
periods during which the Hbeta and Halpha profiles were similar: 1996-1999,
2000-2001 and 2002-2006. The line to continuum flux ratios were different; in
particular during the first period, the lines were not correlated with the
continuum and saturated at high fluxes. In the second and third period, where
the continuum flux was small, the Halpha and Hbeta fluxes were well correlated
to the continuum flux, meaning that the ionizing continuum was a good
extrapolation of the optical continuum. The CCFs are often asymmetrical and the
time lags between the lines and the continuum are badly defined indicating the
presence of a complex BLR, with dimensions from 1 to 50 light-days.Comment: A&A, accepte
Spectral optical monitoring of the double peaked emission line AGN Arp 102B: II. Variability of the broad line properties
We investigate a long-term (26 years, from 1987 to 2013) variability in the
broad spectral line properties of the radio galaxy Arp 102B, an active galaxy
with broad double-peaked emission lines. We use observations presented in Paper
I (Shapovalova et al. 2013) in the period from 1987 to 2011, and a new set of
observations performed in 2012--2013. To explore the BLR geometry, and clarify
some contradictions about the nature of the BLR in Arp 102B we explore
variations in the H and H line parameters during the monitored
period. We fit the broad lines with three broad Gaussian functions finding the
positions and intensities of the blue and red peaks in H and H.
Additionally we fit averaged line profiles with the disc model. We find that
the broad line profiles are double-peaked and have not been changed
significantly in shapes, beside an additional small peak that, from time to
time can be seen in the blue part of the H line. The positions of the
blue and red peaks { have not changed significantly during the monitored
period. The H line is broader than H line in the monitored
period. The disc model is able to reproduce the H and H broad
line profiles, however, observed variability in the line parameters are not in
a good agreement with the emission disc hypothesis. It seems that the BLR of
Arp 102B has a disc-like geometry, but the role of an outflow can also play an
important role in observed variation of the broad line properties.Comment: 17 pages, Accepted for publication in A&
New broad 8Be nuclear resonances
Energies, total and partial widths, and reduced width amplitudes of 8Be
resonances up to an excitation energy of 26 MeV are extracted from a coupled
channel analysis of experimental data. The presence of an extremely broad J^pi
= 2^+ ``intruder'' resonance is confirmed, while a new 1^+ and very broad 4^+
resonance are discovered. A previously known 22 MeV 2^+ resonance is likely
resolved into two resonances. The experimental J^pi T = 3^(+)? resonance at 22
MeV is determined to be 3^-0, and the experimental 1^-? (at 19 MeV) and 4^-?
resonances to be isospin 0.Comment: 16 pages, LaTe
Superhumps in Cataclysmic Binaries. XXII. 1RXS J232953.9+062814
We report photometry of 1RXS J232953.9+062814, a recently discovered dwarf
nova with a remarkably short 64.2-minute orbital period. In quiescence, the
star's light curve is that of a double sinusoid, arising from the "ellipsoidal"
distortion of the Roche-lobe-filling secondary. During superoutburst, common
superhumps develop with a period 3-4% longer than P_orb. This indicates a mass
ratio M_2/M_1=0.19+-0.02, a surprisingly large value in so compact a binary.
This implies that the secondary star has a density 2-3 times higher than that
of other short-period dwarf novae, suggesting a secondary enriched by H-burning
prior to the common-envelope phase of evolution. We estimate i=50+-5 deg,
M_1=0.63 (+0.12, -0.09) M_sol, M_2=0.12 (+0.03, -0.02) M_sol, R_2=0.121
(+0.010, -0.007) R_sol, and a distance to the binary of 180+-40 pc.Comment: PDF, 17 pages, 3 tables, 5 figures; accepted, in press, to appear
