    The detection of gear noise computed by integrating the Fourier and Wavelet methods

    This paper presents a new gearbox noise detection algorithm based on analyzing specific points of vibration signals using the Wavelet Transform. The proposed algorithm is compared with a previouslydeveloped algorithm associated with the Fourier decomposition using Hanning windowing. Simulation carried on real data demonstrate that the WT algorithm achieves a comparable accuracy while having a lower computational cost. This makes the WT algorithm an appropriate candidate for fast processing of noise gear box

    A problem of emphasizing features of a surface roughness by means the Discrete Wavelet Transform

    When we are interested to the detection of the roughness features by means of the 3D reconstruction, based on photometric stereo techniques, an important problem is the elimination of the brightness variation due to different light conditions which can alter the response. This paper will concentrate on presenting results of a new method for eliminating this problem. Every pixel of a picture gives only one number: the brightness of the corresponding point on the object, whereas the surface orientation is described by a normal vector that has two degrees of freedom. The level of brightness depends on many factors as well as the homogeneity of reflection properties of the material or its physical continuity and the surface smoothness or roughness. In this work we will show how the application of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to the processing of some images, captured on different light conditions, permits to solve the problem of emphasizing roughness features of a metallic surface. Wavelet transforms can model irregular data patterns such as sharp changes, better than the Fourier transforms and standard statistical procedures (e.g., parametric and non-parametric regressions) and provide a multiresolution approximation to the data. Here we propose, also, a non-parametric method, based on the wavelet theory, for the estimation of the threshold level of a gray levels distribution, obtained from the intensity image matrix

    Advanced Image Analysis of Two-Phase Flow inside a Centrifugal Pump

    The analysis two-phase flow inside centrifugal pumps is a fundamental issue in several engineering applications. This often represents a bad working condition with respect to single phase one, causing head reduction, efficiency decrease, and higher operational costs in terms of energy and money. The paper reports a numerical analysis of bubbles behavior inside centrifugal pumps. Equations regulating the air bubble motion within the rotor of a centrifugal pump have been solved considering the effects of all forces acting. Coalescence phenomena have been investigated too, in order to identify how gas zone presence in the rotor can lead to anomalous working condition. Results are reported in graphs and diagrams varying bubble dimension and water flow rate. An experimental approach to visualize the two-phase flow field inside the impeller is presented too. Images have been acquired, elaborated, compared with numerical results, and discussed in order to understand the interaction between gas phase and liquid phase and to correlate this behavior with the energy dissipation phenomena for a centrifugal pump

    Clinical, immunological, and molecular features of typical and atypical severe combined immunodeficiency: Report of the italian primary immunodeficiency network

    Severe combined immunodeficiencies (SCIDs) are a group of inborn errors of the immune system, usually associated with severe or life-threatening infections. Due to the variability of clinical phenotypes, the diagnostic complexity and the heterogeneity of the genetic basis, they are often difficult to recognize, leading to a significant diagnostic delay (DD). Aim of this study is to define presenting signs and natural history of SCID in a large cohort of patients, prior to hematopoietic stem cell or gene therapies. To this purpose, we conducted a 30-year retro-prospective multicenter study within the Italian Primary Immunodeficiency Network. One hundred eleven patients, diagnosed as typical or atypical SCID according to the European Society for Immune Deficiencies criteria, were included. Patients were subsequently classified based on the genetic alteration, pathogenic mechanism and immunological classification. A positive relationship between the age at onset and the DD was found. SCID patients with later onset were identified only in the last decade of observation. Syndromic SCIDs represented 28% of the cohort. Eight percent of the subjects were diagnosed in Intensive Care Units. Fifty-three percent had an atypical phenotype and most of them exhibited a discordant genotype-immunophenotype. Pre-treatment mortality was higher in atypical and syndromic patients. Our study broadens the knowledge of clinical and laboratory manifestations and genotype/phenotype correlation in patients with SCID and may facilitate the diagnosis of both typical and atypical forms of the disease in countries where newborn screening programs have not yet been implemented

    Prognostic value of p27(Kip1 )expression in Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the larynx

    BACKGROUND: Very few reports have investigated the role of cell cycle regulators as biomarkers in Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BSCC) of the larynx, a definite morphologic, uncommon, very aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Lower expression of Ki67/Mib-1, a proliferation marker highly expressed in the majority of tumours, and p53, a tumour suppressor protein that can induce an arrest of the G1-S transition, was related to a better prognosis in laryngeal BSCC. In the head and neck, p27(kip1), a member of the Cip1/Kip1 family of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, has emerged as an independent prognostic factor, able to identify low-expressing tumours with unfavourable course. Up to date the role of this protein was never studied in BSCC. Aim of our study was to investigate the potential prognostic value of p27(kip1 )levels and their correlation with Ki67/Mib-1 and p53 expression in BSCC of the larynx. METHODS: The retrospective study group consisted of 15 male and 1 female patients, affected by laryngeal BSCC, ranging in age from 44 to 69 years (mean 58). The tumour originated from the supraglottis in thirtheen cases and from the glottis in the remaining three. Ten patients had metastatic cervical lymph nodes at presentation and were classified as N+. Post surgical stage was IV in four patients, III in nine, II in two cases and I in the remaining one. Follow-up ranged from a minimum of 5 months up to 9 years. Paraffin-embedded tissue sections of each laryngeal tumour were analyzed for p27(kip), Ki67/Mib-1 and p53 expression by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The immunohistochemical study showed p27(kip1 )expression in 40% of the patients with no evidence of disease (NED) and in none (0%) of the patients dead of disease (DOD), whilst p53 was expressed in 60% of patients in NED status and in 90% of patients in DOD status. Ki67/Mib-1 was positive in 80% of NED patients and in 100% of DOD patients. At multivariate analysis, performed by means of Discriminant analysis, low levels of p27(kip1 )expression significantly correlated with poor prognosis (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: p27(kip1 )protein has been shown to be a significant independent prognostic factor in laryngeal SCC. In our series of laryngeal BSCC the resulting data seem to confirm the clinical prognostic relevance of p27(kip1 )low expression, which directly correlated with biological aggressiveness and consequent shortened survival
