Production of a pion in association with a high-Q2 dilepton pair in antiproton-proton annihilation at GSI-FAIR

We evaluate the cross section for anti-p p -> l+ l- pi0 in the forward direction and for large lepton pair invariant mass. In this kinematical region, the leading-twist amplitude factorises into a short-distance matrix element, long-distance dominated antiproton Distribution Amplitudes and proton to pion Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA). Using a modelling inspired from the chiral limit for these TDAs, we obtain a first estimate of this cross section, thus demonstrating that this process can be measured at GSI-FAIR.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, 3 figure

    u-Channel Color Transparency Observables

We propose to study the onset of color transparency in hard exclusive reactions in the backward regime. Guided by the encouraging JLab results on backward pion and omega electro-production data at moderate Q^2, which may be interpreted as the signal of an early scaling regime where the scattering amplitude factorizes in a hard coefficient function convoluted with nucleon to meson transition distribution amplitudes, we show that the study of these channels on nuclear targets opens a new opportunity to test the appearance of nuclear color transparency for a fast moving nucleon

Exclusive diffractive photoproduction of dileptons by timelike Compton scattering

We derive the forward photoproduction amplitude for the diffractive Îłp→l+l−p\gamma p \to l^+ l^- p reaction in the momentum space. within the formalism of k⊄k_\perp- factorization. Predictions for the Îłp→l+l−p\gamma p \to l^+ l^- p reaction are given using unintegrated gluon distribution from the literature. We calculate the total cross section as a function of photon-proton center of mass energy and the invariant mass distribution of the lepton pair. We also discuss whether the production of timelike virtual photons can be approximated by continuing to the spacelike domain q2<0 q^2 < 0. The present calculation provides an input for future predictions for exclusive hadroproduction in the pp→pl+l−pp p \to p l^+ l^- p reaction.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

Off-Forward Parton Distributions in 1+1 Dimensional QCD

We use two-dimensional QCD as a toy laboratory to study off-forward parton distributions (OFPDs) in a covariant field theory. Exact expressions (to leading order in 1/NC1/N_C) are presented for OFPDs in this model and are evaluated for some specific numerical examples. Special emphasis is put on comparing the x>ζx>\zeta and x<ζx<\zeta regimes as well as on analyzing the implications for the light-cone description of form factors.Comment: Revtex, 6 pages, 4 figure

Hadron Helicity Violation in Exclusive Processes: Quantitative Calculations in Leading Order QCD

We study a new mechanism for hadronic helicity flip in high energy hard exclusive reactions. The mechanism proceeds in the limit of perfect chiral symmetry, namely without any need to flip a quark helicity. The fundamental feature of the new mechanism is the breaking of rotational symmetry of the hard collision by a scattering plane in processes involving independent quark scattering. We show that in the impulse approximation there is no evidence for of the helicity violating process as the energy or momentum transfer Q2Q^2 is increased over the region 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. In the asymptotic region Q^2> 1000 GeV^2, a saddle point approximation with doubly logarithmic accuracy yields suppression by a fraction of power of Q^2. ``Chirally--odd" exclusive wave functions which carry non--zero orbital angular momentum and yet are leading order in the high energy limit, play an important role.Comment: uuencoded LaTeX file (21 pages) and PostScript figure

Wide-angle elastic scattering and color randomization

    Get PDF
Baryon-baryon elastic scattering is considered in the independent scattering (Landshoff) mechanism. It is suggested that for scattering at moderate energies, direct and interchange quark channels contribute with equal color coefficients because the quark color is randomized by soft gluon exchange during the hadronization stage. With this assumption, it is shown that the ratio of cross sections Rp‟p/ppR_{\overline{p} p/ p p} at CM angle Ξ=900\theta = 90^0 decreases from a high energy value of R_{\pbar p / pp} \approx 1/2.7, down to R_{\pbar p / pp} \approx 1/28, compatible with experimental data at moderate energies. This sizable fall in the ratio seems to be characteristic of the Landshoff mechanism, in which changes at the quark level have a strong effect precisely because the hadronic process occurs via multiple quark scatterings. The effect of color randomization on the angular distribution of proton-proton elastic scattering and the cross section ratio Rnp/ppR_{np/pp} is also discussed.Comment: 18 pages, latex2e, 4 uuencoded figures, include

Positivity bounds on generalized parton distributions in impact parameter representation

New positivity bounds are derived for generalized (off-forward) parton distributions using the impact parameter representation. These inequalities are stable under the evolution to higher normalization points. The full set of inequalities is infinite. Several particular cases are considered explicitly.Comment: 8 page

Probing partonic structure in gamma* gamma -> pi pi near threshold

Hadron pair production gamma* gamma -> h hbar in the region where the c.m. energy is much smaller than the photon virtuality can be described in a factorized form, as the convolution of a partonic handbag diagram and generalized distribution amplitudes which are new non-perturbative functions describing the exclusive fragmentation of a quark-antiquark pair into two hadrons. Scaling behavior and a selection rule on photon helicity are signatures of this mechanism. The case where h is a pion is emphasized.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX2

The Proton Electromagnetic Form Factor F2F_2 and Quark Orbital Angular Momentum

We analyze the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio R(Q2)=QF2(Q2)/F1(Q2)R(Q^{2})=QF_2(Q^{2})/F_1(Q^{2}) as a function of momentum transfer Q2Q^{2} within perturbative QCD. We find that the prediction for R(Q2)R(Q^{2}) at large momentum transfer QQ depends on the exclusive quark wave functions, which are unknown. For a wide range of wave functions we find that $ QF_2/F_1 \sim\ const$ at large momentum transfer, in agreement with recent JLAB data.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Hard Exclusive Pion Electroproduction at Backward Angles With CLAS

    Get PDF
We report on the first measurement of cross sections for exclusive deeply virtual pion electroproduction off the proton, ep → e\u27nπ+, above the resonance region at backward pion center-of-mass angles. The ϕ∗ π-dependent cross sections were measured, from which we extracted three combinations of structure functions of the proton. Our results are compatible with calculations based on nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs). These non-perturbative objects are defined as matrix elements of threequark-light-cone-operators and characterize partonic correlations with a particular emphasis on baryon charge distribution inside a nucleon
