Quaternionic factorization of the Schroedinger operator and its applications to some first order systems of mathematical physics
We consider the following first order systems of mathematical physics.
1.The Dirac equation with scalar potential. 2.The Dirac equation with
electric potential. 3.The Dirac equation with pseudoscalar potential. 4.The
system describing non-linear force free magnetic fields or Beltrami fields with
nonconstant proportionality factor. 5.The Maxwell equations for slowly changing
media. 6.The static Maxwell system.
We show that all this variety of first order systems reduces to a single
quaternionic equation the analysis of which in its turn reduces to the solution
of a Schroedinger equation with biquaternionic potential. In some important
situations the biquaternionic potential can be diagonalized and converted into
scalar potentials
Instability of the Two-Dimensional Metallic Phase to Parallel Magnetic Field
We report on magnetotransport studies of the unusual two-dimensional metallic
phase in high mobility Si-MOS structures. We have observed that the magnetic
field applied in the 2D plane suppresses the metallic state, causing the
resistivity to increase dramatically by more than 30 times. Over the total
existence range of the metallic state, we have found three distinct types of
the magnetoresistance, related to the corresponding quantum corrections to the
conductivity. Our data suggest that the unusual metallic state is a consequence
of both spin- and Coulomb-interaction effects.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, 4 ps fig
On the Klein-Gordon equation and hyperbolic pseudoanalytic function theory
Elliptic pseudoanalytic function theory was considered independently by Bers
and Vekua decades ago. In this paper we develop a hyperbolic analogue of
pseudoanalytic function theory using the algebra of hyperbolic numbers. We
consider the Klein-Gordon equation with a potential. With the aid of one
particular solution we factorize the Klein-Gordon operator in terms of two
Vekua-type operators. We show that real parts of the solutions of one of these
Vekua-type operators are solutions of the considered Klein-Gordon equation.
Using hyperbolic pseudoanalytic function theory, we then obtain explicit
construction of infinite systems of solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation with
potential. Finally, we give some examples of application of the proposed
procedure
Weak Field Hall Resistance and Effective Carrier Density Through Metal-Insulator Transition in Si-MOS Structures
We studied the weak field Hall voltage in 2D electron layers in Si-MOS
structures with different mobilities, through the metal-insulator transition.
In the vicinity of the critical density on the metallic side of the transition,
we have found weak deviations (about 6-20 %) of the Hall voltage from its
classical value. The deviations do not correlate with the strong temperature
dependence of the diagonal resistivity rho_{xx}(T). The smallest deviation in
R_{xy} was found in the highest mobility sample exhibiting the largest
variation in the diagonal resistivity \rho_{xx} with temperature (by a factor
of 5).Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTe
Flow diagram of the metal-insulator transition in two dimensions
The discovery of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in two-dimensional (2D)
electron systems challenged the veracity of one of the most influential
conjectures in the physics of disordered electrons, which states that `in two
dimensions, there is no true metallic behaviour'; no matter how weak the
disorder, electrons would be trapped and unable to conduct a current. However,
that theory did not account for interactions between the electrons. Here we
investigate the interplay between the electron-electron interactions and
disorder near the MIT using simultaneous measurements of electrical resistivity
and magnetoconductance. We show that both the resistance and interaction
amplitude exhibit a fan-like spread as the MIT is crossed. From these data we
construct a resistance-interaction flow diagram of the MIT that clearly reveals
a quantum critical point, as predicted by the two-parameter scaling theory
(Punnoose and Finkel'stein, Science 310, 289 (2005)). The metallic side of this
diagram is accurately described by the renormalization group theory without any
fitting parameters. In particular, the metallic temperature dependence of the
resistance sets in when the interaction amplitude reaches gamma_2 = 0.45 - a
value in remarkable agreement with the one predicted by the theory.Comment: as publishe
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) has been increasing steadily all over the world. A large number of medicinal plants that have the hypoglycemic effect are known, but, unfortunately, currently there is very limited choice of antidiabetic herbal medicines.Aim. To design the experiment in order to study the hypoglycemic effect of polyphenolic extracts from bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) leaves under the experimental insulin resistance (IR) in rats.Materials and methods. The experimental IR was induced by dexamethasone injections (Dex) and feeding with a high-fructose diet (HFD). Male outbred albino rats were randomized depending on the purpose of the experiment. As the study objects 50 % ethanolic polyphenol extracts obtained from bearberry leaves with addition of arginine (PE50_arg) and cysteine (PE50_cys) were selected. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed in all experimental groups of animals.Results. Dex had a more pronounced effect on tolerance to glucose compared to the HFD. It was shown that PE50_arg and PE50_cys after two weeks of administration revealed the ability to decrease the blood glucose level in rats, as well as reduce IR development and improve tolerance to glucose under the experimental IR. The hypoglycemic activity found did not much differ from the action of Metformin, but exceeded the activity of Arphazetin. These results can be the evidence of activation of glucose utilization processes, and it, in turn, indicates the insulin sensitivity improvement due to the action of the extracts studied. The data obtained indicate that the corrective effect of arginine and cysteine on signal transduction processes in insulin target cells plays an important role in the IR treatment.Conclusions. Bearberry leaves are the promising raw material for creating an anti-diabetic drug. Thus, it is necessary to further study the mechanisms of regulation of metabolic disorders when introducing new polyphenolic extracts.
Metal-insulator transition in a 2D electron gas: Equivalence of two approaches for determining the critical point
The critical electron density for the metal-insulator transition in a
two-dimensional electron gas can be determined by two distinct methods: (i) a
sign change of the temperature derivative of the resistance, and (ii) vanishing
activation energy and vanishing nonlinearity of current-voltage characteristics
as extrapolated from the insulating side. We find that in zero magnetic field
(but not in the presence of a parallel magnetic field), both methods give
equivalent results, adding support to the existence of a true zero-field
metal-insulator transition.Comment: As publishe
Ground state properties of the 2D disordered Hubbard model
We study the ground state of the two-dimensional (2D) disordered Hubbard
model by means of the projector quantum Monte Carlo (PQMC) method. This
approach allows us to investigate the ground state properties of this model for
lattice sizes up to , at quarter filling, for a broad range of
interaction and disorder strengths. Our results show that the ground state of
this system of spin-1/2 fermions remains localised in the presence of the
short-ranged Hubbard interaction.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
Possible Metal/Insulator Transition at B=0 in Two Dimensions
We have studied the zero magnetic field resistivity of unique high- mobility
two-dimensional electron system in silicon. At very low electron density (but
higher than some sample-dependent critical value,
cm), CONVENTIONAL WEAK LOCALIZATION IS OVERPOWERED BY A SHARP DROP OF
RESISTIVITY BY AN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE with decreasing temperature below 1--2 K.
No further evidence for electron localization is seen down to at least 20 mK.
For , the sample is insulating. The resistivity is empirically
found to SCALE WITH TEMPERATURE BOTH BELOW AND ABOVE WITH A SINGLE
PARAMETER which approaches zero at suggesting a metal/ insulator
phase transition.Comment: 10 pages; REVTeX v3.0; 3 POSTSCRIPT figures available upon request;
