Detection of HIV-1 infection in dried blood spots from a 12-year-old ABO bedside test card
Background and Objectives: We tested dried blood from an ABO bedside test card which had been stored at room temperature for 12 years, to prove that a patient with HIV-1 infection had been infected by blood transfusion. Materials and Methods: Immunoblots for HIV-1 antibodies and threefold PCRs with half-nested primers for the HIV-1 integrase gene were done with eluates from the dried blood spots. Results: HIV-1 antibodies and HIV-1 DNA could be detected in the sample from one unit of blood, but not from the two other units or from the recipient before transfusion. Conclusion: Further studies should be done on the validity of stored dried blood as an alternative to the storage of frozen donor serum for several years for `look-back' studies
Magnetic properties of HO2 thin films
We report on the magnetic and transport studies of hafnium oxide thin films
grown by pulsed-laser deposition on sapphire substrates under different oxygen
pressures, ranging from 10-7 to 10-1 mbar. Some physical properties of these
thin films appear to depend on the oxygen pressure during growth: the film
grown at low oxygen pressure (P ~= 10-7 mbar) has a metallic aspect and is
conducting, with a positive Hall signal, while those grown under higher oxygen
pressures (7 x 10-5 <= P <= 0.4 mbar) are insulating. However, no intrinsic
ferromagnetic signal could be attributed to the HfO2 films, irrespective of the
oxygen pressure during the deposition.Comment: 1
Hybrid protoneutron stars with the MIT bag model
We study the hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of protoneutron
stars. For the hadronic sector, we use a microscopic equation of state
involving nucleons and hyperons derived within the finite-temperature
Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone many-body theory, with realistic two-body and
three-body forces. For the description of quark matter, we employ the MIT bag
model both with a constant and a density-dependent bag parameter. We calculate
the structure of protostars with the equation of state comprising both phases
and find maximum masses below 1.6 solar masses. Metastable heavy hybrid

Io: IUE observations of its atmosphere and the plasma torus
Two of the main components of the atmosphere of Io, neutral oxygen and sulfur, were detected with the IUE. Four observations yield brightnesses that are similar, regardless of whether the upstream or the downstream sides of the torus plasma flow around Io is observed. A simple model requires the emissions to be produced by the interaction of O and S columns in the exospheric range with 2 eV electrons. Cooling of the 5 eV torus electrons is required prior to their interaction with the atmosphere of Io. Inconsistencies in the characteristics of the spectra that cannot be accounted for in this model require further analysis with improved atomic data. The Io plasma torus was monitored with the IUE. The long-term stability of the warm torus is established. The observed brightnesses were analyzed using a model of the torus, and variations of less than 30 percent in the composition are observed, the quantitative results being model dependent
Survey for Transiting Extrasolar Planets in Stellar Systems. II. Spectrophotometry and Metallicities of Open Clusters
We present metallicity estimates for seven open clusters based on
spectrophotometric indices from moderate-resolution spectroscopy. Observations
of field giants of known metallicity provide a correlation between the
spectroscopic indices and the metallicity of open cluster giants. We use \chi^2
analysis to fit the relation of spectrophotometric indices to metallicity in
field giants. The resulting function allows an estimate of the target-cluster
giants' metallicities with an error in the method of \pm0.08 dex. We derive the
following metallicities for the seven open clusters: NGC 1245,
[m/H]=-0.14\pm0.04; NGC 2099, [m/H]=+0.05\pm0.05; NGC 2324, [m/H]=-0.06\pm0.04;
NGC 2539, [m/H]=-0.04\pm0.03; NGC 2682 (M67), [m/H]=-0.05\pm0.02; NGC 6705,
[m/H]=+0.14\pm0.08; NGC 6819, [m/H]=-0.07\pm0.12. These metallicity estimates
will be useful in planning future extra-solar planet transit searches since

First High Contrast Imaging Using a Gaussian Aperture Pupil Mask
Placing a pupil mask with a gaussian aperture into the optical train of
current telescopes represents a way to attain high contrast imaging that
potentially improves contrast by orders of magnitude compared to current
techniques. We present here the first observations ever using a gaussian
aperture pupil mask (GAPM) on the Penn State near-IR Imager and Spectrograph
(PIRIS) at the Mt. Wilson 100 telescope. Two nearby stars were
observed, Eridani and Her A. A faint companion was detected
around Her A, confirming it as a proper motion companion. Furthermore,
the observed H and K magnitudes of the companion were used to constrain its
nature. No companions or faint structure were observed for Eridani.
We found that our observations with the GAPM achieved contrast levels similar
to our coronographic images, without blocking light from the central star. The
mask's performance also nearly reached sensitivities reported for other ground
based adaptive optics coronographs and deep HST images, but did not reach
theoretically predicted contrast levels. We outline ways that could improve the

Library of medium-resolution fiber optic echelle spectra of F, G, K, and M field dwarfs to giants stars
We present a library of Penn State Fiber Optic Echelle (FOE) observations of
a sample of field stars with spectral types F to M and luminosity classes V to
I. The spectral coverage is from 3800 AA to 10000 AA with nominal a resolving
power 12000. These spectra include many of the spectral lines most widely used
as optical and near-infrared indicators of chromospheric activity such as the
Balmer lines (H_alpha, H_beta), Ca II H & K, Mg I b triplet, Na I D_{1} and
D_{2}, He I D_{3}, and Ca II IRT lines. There are also a large number of
photospheric lines, which can also be affected by chromospheric activity, and
temperature sensitive photospheric features such as TiO bands. The spectra have
been compiled with the goal of providing a set of standards observed at medium
resolution. We have extensively used such data for the study of active
chromosphere stars by applying a spectral subtraction technique. However, the
data set presented here can also be utilized in a wide variety of ways ranging
from radial velocity templates to study of variable stars and stellar
population synthesis. This library can also be used for spectral classification
purposes and determination of atmospheric parameters (T_eff, log{g}, [Fe/H]). A
digital version of all the fully reduced spectra is available via ftp and the

HST/STIS Ultraviolet Imaging of Polar Aurora on Ganymede
We report new observations of the spectrum of Ganymede in the spectral range
1160 - 1720 A made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on HST
on 1998 October 30. The observations were undertaken to locate the regions of
the atomic oxygen emissions at 1304 and 1356 A, previously observed with the
GHRS on HST, that Hall et al. (1998) claimed indicated the presence of polar
aurorae on Ganymede. The use of the 2" wide STIS slit, slightly wider than the
disk diameter of Ganymede, produced objective spectra with images of the two
oxygen emissions clearly separated. The OI emissions appear in both
hemispheres, at latitudes above 40 degrees, in accordance with recent Galileo
magnetometer data that indicate the presence of an intrinsic magnetic field
such that Jovian magnetic field lines are linked to the surface of Ganymede
only at high latitudes. Both the brightness and relative north-south intensity
of the emissions varied considerably over the four contiguous orbits (5.5
hours) of observation, presumably due to the changing Jovian plasma environment
at Ganymede. However, the observed longitudinal non-uniformity in the emission
brightness at high latitudes, particularly in the southern hemisphere, and the
lack of pronounced limb brightening near the poles are difficult to understand
with current models. In addition to observed solar HI Lyman-alpha reflected
from the disk, extended Lyman-alpha emission resonantly scattered from a
hydrogen exosphere is detected out to beyond two Ganymede radii from the limb,
and its brightness is consistent with the Galileo UVS measurements of Barth et

Identification of Fibroblasts as a Major Site of Albumin Catabolism in Peripheral Tissues
Rat serum albumin has been labeledw ith dilactitollZ5I- tyramine,( 12âI-DLT) a radioactive tracer which remains entrappedw ithin lysosomes following cellular uptake and degradation of the carrier protein. Similar kinetics of clearance from the rat circulation were observed for albumin labeled conventionally with lZsI or 12âI-DLT-albumin, both proteinhsa ving circulating half-lives of -2.2 days. In contrast, the recovery of whole body radioactivity had half-lives of -2.2 and 5.1 days, respectively, for the two protein preparations, indicating substantial retention of degradation products derived from catabolism of ââI-DLT-albumin. Measurement of total and acid-soluble radioactivity in tissues 2 or 4 days after injection of ââ1-DLTalbumin revealed that skin and muscle accounted for the largest fraction( 50-60%)o f degradation products in the body. Fibroblaswtse re identified by autoradiography as the major cell type containing radioactive degradation products in skin and muscle. Fibroblasts were isolated from skin by collagenase digestion, followed by density gradient centrifugation. The amount of acid-soluble radioactivity recovered in these cells was in excellent agreement with that predicted based on acid precipitation of solubilized wholsek in preparations. These studies demonstrate for the first time that fibroblasts are a major cell type involved in the degradation of albuminin vivo
