    3D printing dimensional calibration shape: Clebsch Cubic

    3D printing and other layer manufacturing processes are challenged by dimensional accuracy. Several techniques are used to validate and calibrate dimensional accuracy through the complete building envelope. The validation process involves the growing and measuring of a shape with known parameters. The measured result is compared with the intended digital model. Processes with the risk of deformation after time or post processing may find this technique beneficial. We propose to use objects from algebraic geometry as test shapes. A cubic surface is given as the zero set of a 3rd degree polynomial with 3 variables. A class of cubics in real 3D space contains exactly 27 real lines. We provide a library for the computer algebra system Singular which, from 6 given points in the plane, constructs a cubic and the lines on it. A surface shape derived from a cubic offers simplicity to the dimensional comparison process, in that the straight lines and many other features can be analytically determined and easily measured using non-digital equipment. For example, the surface contains so-called Eckardt points, in each of which three of the lines intersect, and also other intersection points of pairs of lines. Distances between these intersection points can easily be measured, since the points are connected by straight lines. At all intersection points of lines, angles can be verified. Hence, many features distributed over the build volume are known analytically, and can be used for the validation process. Due to the thin shape geometry the material required to produce an algebraic surface is minimal. This paper is the first in a series that proposes the process chain to first define a cubic with a configuration of lines in a given print volume and then to develop the point cloud for the final manufacturing.     Social presence in the 21st Century: an adjustment to the Community of Inquiry framework

    The Community of Inquiry framework, originally proposed by Garrison, Anderson and Archer (2000) identifies teaching, social and cognitive presences as central to a successful online educational experience. This article presents the findings of a study conducted in Uruguay between 2007 and 2010. The research aimed to establish the role of cognitive, social and teaching presences in the professional development of 40 English language teachers on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programmes delivered in blended learning settings. The findings suggest that teaching presence and cognitive presence have themselves 'become social'. The research points to social presence as a major lever for engagement, sense-making and peer support. Based on the patterns identified in the study, this article puts forward an adjustment to the Community of Inquiry framework, which shows social presence as more prominent within the teaching and cognitive constructs than the original version of the framework suggests

    Shear-banding in a lyotropic lamellar phase, Part 2: Temporal fluctuations

    We analyze the temporal fluctuations of the flow field associated to a shear-induced transition in a lyotropic lamellar phase: the layering transition of the onion texture. In the first part of this work [Salmon et al., submitted to Phys. Rev. E], we have evidenced banded flows at the onset of this shear-induced transition which are well accounted for by the classical picture of shear-banding. In the present paper, we focus on the temporal fluctuations of the flow field recorded in the coexistence domain. These striking dynamics are very slow (100--1000s) and cannot be due to external mechanical noise. Using velocimetry coupled to structural measurements, we show that these fluctuations are due to a motion of the interface separating the two differently sheared bands. Such a motion seems to be governed by the fluctuations of σ\sigma^\star, the local stress at the interface between the two bands. Our results thus provide more evidence for the relevance of the classical mechanical approach of shear-banding even if the mechanism leading to the fluctuations of σ\sigma^\star remains unclear

(Reports, 27 October 2006, p. 654) showed that inhibition of the γ-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC) activates the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC), which led them to suggest that γ-TuRC proteins play molecular roles in SAC activation. Because γ-TuRC inhibition leads to pleiotropic spindle defects, which are well known to activate kinetochore-derived checkpoint signaling, we believe that this conclusion is premature

    Shear-banding in a lyotropic lamellar phase, Part 1: Time-averaged velocity profiles

    Using velocity profile measurements based on dynamic light scattering and coupled to structural and rheological measurements in a Couette cell, we present evidences for a shear-banding scenario in the shear flow of the onion texture of a lyotropic lamellar phase. Time-averaged measurements clearly show the presence of structural shear-banding in the vicinity of a shear-induced transition, associated to the nucleation and growth of a highly sheared band in the flow. Our experiments also reveal the presence of slip at the walls of the Couette cell. Using a simple mechanical approach, we demonstrate that our data confirms the classical assumption of the shear-banding picture, in which the interface between bands lies at a given stress σ\sigma^\star. We also outline the presence of large temporal fluctuations of the flow field, which are the subject of the second part of this paper [Salmon {\it et al.}, submitted to Phys. Rev. E]

    Fostering online learning at the workplace : a scheme to identify and analyse collaboration processes in asynchronous discussions

    Research has shown that providing participants with high‐quality learning material is not sufficient to help them profit most from online education. The level of interaction among participants is another key determinant for learning outcomes. However, merely proposing interaction does not automatically lead to fruitful discussion and collaboration. Specifically, social presence and facilitation activities add value to online discussions. In Murphy's collaboration framework, social presence represents the basis of successful online collaboration from which more reflective discussions and co‐construction can evolve. In this paper, an adjusted version of this framework was applied in a workplace learning context. The content analysis of 1170 comments in an online course for careers practitioners of a public employment service showed that the extended framework generated deeper insights into the dynamics of online discussions. The results show that involvement in collaborative learning at the workplace was supported by a high social presence and influenced by course topic and tasks. Facilitation played an important role in creating a sympathetic sense of community and stimulating co‐creation processes

    Variational water-wave model with accurate dispersion and vertical vorticity

    A new water-wave model has been derived which is based on variational techniques and combines a depth-averaged vertical (component of) vorticity with depth-dependent potential flow. The model facilitates the further restriction of the vertical profile of the velocity potential to n-th order polynomials or a finite-element profile with a small number of elements (say), leading to a framework for efficient modeling of the interaction of steepening and breaking waves near the shore with a large-scale horizontal flow. The equations are derived from a constrained variational formulation which leads to conservation laws for energy, mass, momentum and vertical vorticity. It is shown that the potential-flow water-wave equations and the shallow-water equations are recovered in the relevant limits. Approximate shock relations are provided, which can be used in numerical schemes to model breaking waves

    'Selling it as a holistic health provision and not just about condoms ?' Sexual health services in school settings: current models and their relationship with sex and relationships education policy and provision

    In this article we discuss the findings from a recent study of UK policy and practice in relation to sexual health services for young people, based in - or closely linked with - schools. This study formed part of a larger project, completed in 2009, which also included a systematic review of international research. The findings discussed in this paper are based on analyses of interviews with 51 service managers and questionnaire returns from 205 school nurses. Four themes are discussed. First, we found three main service permutations, in a context of very diverse and uneven implementation. Second, we identified factors within the school context that shaped and often constrained service provision; some of these also have implications for sex and relationships education (SRE). Third, we found contrasting approaches to the relationship between SRE input and sexual health provision. Fourth, we identified some specific barriers that need to be addressed in order to develop 'young people friendly' services in the school context. The relative autonomy available to school head teachers and governors can represent an obstacle to service provision - and inter-professional collaboration - in a climate where, in many schools, there is still considerable ambivalence about discussing 'sex' openly. In conclusion, we identify areas worthy of further research and development, in order to address some obstacles to sexual health service and SRE provision in schools

    Atividades e práticas em coletivos de trabalho - mutirões - em agroflorestas agroecológicas do litoral do Paraná, Brasil.

    O objetivo desse trabalho é a caracterização, análise e discussão das ações praticadas nos mutirões do Grupo de Produtores Agroflorestais Gralha Azul, de Morretes-PR. Dezesseis mutirões do grupo foram acompanhados. As atividades realizadas foram: preparo de canteiro (12 mutirões) e plantio de frutíferas (4). Houve dois tipos de preparo de canteiro: mecanizado e não mecanizado. No mecanizado, com enxada rotativa, em média 7 agricultores em cerca de 6 horas fizeram 121,8 m² de canteiros com largura fixa de 1,20m. Já no não mecanizado, a média foi de 6 agricultores trabalhando cerca de 6 horas fazendo 65,3m² de canteiro com largura média de 0,56 m. Em média nos plantios de frutíferas 6 agricultores trabalharam cerca de 4 horas. A preferência por estas atividades é reflexo tanto do aproveitamento de mão de obra para trabalhos mais árduos quanto pelo fato que a agrofloresta é uma atividade recente. As práticas observadas são recomendações técnicas baseadas na troca de saberes que acontecem entre os técnicos e agricultores e seguem fundamentos agroecológicos.Edição dos resumos do 7º Congresso Brasileiro de Agroecologia, 2013, Porto Alegre
