Why Do Cascade Sizes Follow a Power-Law?
We introduce random directed acyclic graph and use it to model the
information diffusion network. Subsequently, we analyze the cascade generation
model (CGM) introduced by Leskovec et al. [19]. Until now only empirical
studies of this model were done. In this paper, we present the first
theoretical proof that the sizes of cascades generated by the CGM follow the
power-law distribution, which is consistent with multiple empirical analysis of
the large social networks. We compared the assumptions of our model with the

Sustainable coastal social-ecological systems: how do we define “coastal”?
Coastal social-ecological systems (SES) are home to over 500 million people and one of the most productive and diverse ecosystems in the world. In recent years, coastal SES are experiencing severe threat from an increasing population, resource exploitation, and global environmental change (e.g. climate change), which have devastating societal impacts in coastal areas. Despite several global, national, and local initiatives, there is a growing consensus that coastal resources are depleting and increasing conflicts in coastal areas. Recognizing the global call to understand social–ecological interactions for implementing development practices, this special issue features a suite (seven) of articles advancing the understanding of the sustainability of social and ecological interactions within coastal areas through theoretical SES approaches and related analytical methods. In this editorial of this special issue, we also argued that coastal area needs to define from SES perspectives, which have received less attention compared to ecological and social perspectives. We hope that this special issue will stimulate the debate and further thinking of how coastal SES can be managed sustainably by conceptualizing and understanding the complex dynamics (interaction, feedback) of SES
Highly Excited Core Resonances in Photoionization of Fe XVII : Implications for Plasma Opacities
A comprehensive study of high-accuracy photoionization cross sections is
carried out using the relativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix (BPRM) method for (hnu
+ Fe XVII --> Fe XVIII + e). Owing to its importance in high-temperature
plasmas the calculations cover a large energy range, particularly the myriad
photoexciation-of-core (PEC) resonances including the n = 3 levels not
heretofore considered. The calculations employ a close coupling wave function
expansion of 60 levels of the core ion Fe XVIII ranging over a wide energy
range of nearly 900 eV between the n = 2 and n = 3 levels. Strong coupling
effects due to dipole transition arrays 2p^5 --> 2p^4 (3s,3d) manifest
themselves as large PEC resonances throughout this range, and enhance the
effective photoionization cross sections orders of magnitude above the
background. Comparisons with the erstwhile Opacity Project (OP) and other
previous calculations shows that the currently available cross sections
considerably underestimate the bound-free cross sections. A
level-identification scheme is used for spectroscopic designation of the 454
bound fine structure levels of Fe XVII. Level-specific photoionization cross
sections are computed for all levels. In addition, partial cross sections for
leaving the core ion Fe XVII in the ground state are also obtained. These
results should be relevant to modeling of astrophysical and laboratory plasma
sources requiring (i) photoionization rates, (ii) extensive
non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium models, (iii) total unified electron-ion
recombination rates including radiative and dielectronic recombination, and
(iv) plasma opacities. We particularly examine PEC and non-PEC resonance
strengths and emphasize their expanded role to incorporate inner-shell
excitations for improved opacities, as shown by the computed monochromatic

Understanding the social in a digital age
Datafication, algorithms, social media and their various assemblages enable massive connective processes, enriching personal interaction and amplifying the scope and scale of public networks. At the same time, surveillance capitalists and the social quantification sector are committed to monetizing every aspect of human communication, all of which threaten ideal social qualities, such as togetherness and connection. This Special Issue brings together a range of voices and provocations around ‘the social’, all of which aim to critically interrogate mediated human connection and their contingent socialities. Conventional methods may no longer be adequate, and we must rethink not only the fabric of the social but the very tools we use to make sense of our changing social formations. This Special Issue raises shared concerns with what the social means today, unpicking and rethinking the seams between digitization and social life that characterize today’s digital age
