    The Penn State ORSER system for processing and analyzing ERTS and other MSS data

    The author has identified the following significant results. The office for Remote Sensing of Earth Resources (ORSER) of the Space Science and Engineering Laboratory at the Pennsylvania State University has developed an extensive operational system for processing and analyzing ERTS-1 and similar multispectral data. The ORSER system was developed for use by a wide variety of researchers working in remote sensing. Both photointerpretive techniques and automatic computer processing methods have been developed and used, separately and in a combined approach. A remote Job Entry system permits use of an IBM 370/168 computer from any compatible remote terminal, including equipment tied in by long distance telephone connections. An elementary cost analysis has been prepared for the processing of ERTS data

    Oviposition deterrents for Aedes aegypti in extracts of Lemna minor

    Dual choice bioassays demonstrated that water and methanolic extracts of <i>Lemna minor</i> L., in aqueous solution, deterred oviposition by <i>Aedes aegypti</i> L. The methanolic extracts were active at concentrations of 1000 and 10,000 PPM but were inactive at 1, 10, and 100 PPM. Pentane extracts and L. minor culture water showed no activity. None of the extracts bioassayed were biologically active against <i>Culex pipiens</i> L. Experiments in which physical contact with the extracts was prevented, provide evidence that a volatile chemical emanating from the extract is responsible for the deterrency

    Workplace Giving in Universities: A U.S. Case Study at Indiana University

    The phenomenon of workplace giving is underexamined in the scholarly literature; philanthropic gifts by employees to their nonprofit employers have received less attention within national and transnational contexts. This study considered the association between university staff propensity toward “internal workplace giving” and donor characteristics, drawing on literature about organizational commitment and identification as a beginning for advancing theoretical understanding of employee–employer relationships and giving at both the micro-level and meso-level. The sample of 17,038 employees covered 3 years at Indiana University, an American, public, multicampus institution. Despite its specific national and cultural context, the study raises relevant issues about workplace giving. Relational and personal characteristics were found to be significant predictors for determining who donates; using these characteristics to predict giving levels, however, was less successful. The study anticipates a growing need for related research and provides direction for further methodological and theoretical approaches

    Pre-emergence insecticide applications for control of the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)

    An experiment was set up near Princeton, British Columbia, to investigate the efficacy of carbaryl (Sevin SL) and chlorpyrifos and (Dursban 4E) at 1% and 2% a.i. in water, to prevent the successful emergence of mountain pine beetles, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, from infested lodgepole pines, Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelmann. All treatments were effective in killing the emerging beetles outright. Mortality ranged from 83.3% for 1% Sevin to 94.9% for 2% Dursban, compared with 6.1% mortality of beetles emerging from water-treated control trees. Living emergent beetles from all treatments suffered >50 and >90% mortality after 1 and 5 days, respectively, compared with 5 and 10 days, respectively, for beetles from control treatments

    Analyzing Three Decades of Philanthropic Giving to U.S. Higher Education (1988–2018)

    This investigation explores trends in U.S. higher education philanthropy across 30 years, exploring giving by donor type, the purposes of the contributions, and institutional-type variation in philanthropy. We used a longitudinal national sample (1988–2018) of approximately 400 public and private institutions from the Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) survey. In the sample of mostly 4-year institutions, giving increased by an inflation-adjusted average of 3.6% annually and 175% overall, from 9.1billionto9.1 billion to 25.1 billion (2018 dollars). All donor types gave more dollars, gifts supported a broad range of purposes, and all institutional types benefited. Four notable trends include: an increase in the proportion of donations from organizations, and especially foundations, rather than individuals; an early shift in funding toward capital/endowment purposes but then back to current operations since 1998; designation of a larger proportion of funds for restricted, rather than unrestricted, purposes; and a higher proportion of dollars contributed to public, as compared to private institutions. Within sector trends reveal that increased giving to public institutions partly accounts for the rising proportions of both organizational donations and donations for current operations purposes. This study fills gaps in the scholarly literature about higher education philanthropy and provides information for institutional leaders to benchmark fundraising trends and prepare for the future

    Hymenopterous parasites associated with Phyllonorycter blancardella [Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae] in Nova Scotia and Quebec

    Une étude a été effectuée dans des vergers commerciaux et non-traités du Québec et de la Nouvelle-Écosse pour déterminer l’abondance et la diversité des parasites de la mineuse marbrée, Phyllonorycter blancardella [Lepidoptera : Gracillariidae]. Au Québec, 29 espèces de parasites ont été retrouvées et elles appartenaient à 7 familles, soit Aphelinidae, Braconidae, Chalcidae, Eulophidae, Ichneumonidae, Pteromalidae et Scelionidae. Les espèces les plus fréquentes étaient : Pholetesor ornigis (67 %), Sympiesis marylandensis (11 %), S. serviceicornis (7 %), Pnigalio maculipes (1,5 %), Tetrasticus spp. (1,2 %). Toutes les autres espèces représentaient moins de 1 % des espèces trouvées. Pholetesor pedias, une espèce braconide relâchée à Frelighsburg, Québec en 1983 n’a pas été détectée en 1984 et 1985. En Nouvelle-Écosse, 19 espèces ont été trouvées et elles appartenaient à 5 familles, soit Braconidae, Chalcidae, Eulophidae, Ichneumonidae et Pteromalidae. Les espèces les plus fréquentes étaient : Pholetesor ornigis (52 %), Pnigalio maculipes (14 %), Sympiesis serviceicornis (12 %), S. marylandensis (9,5 %), Sympiesis spp. (5 %), Horismenus fraternus (1,8 %), Paraleurocerus sp. (1,3 %), Stictopisthus flaviceps (1,1 %); toutes les autres espèces représentaient moins de 1 % des espèces trouvées. Sept et cinq espèces d’hyperparasites ont été retrouvées en Nouvelle-Écosse et au Québec, respectivement. Sticopisthus bilineatus, S. flaviceps, Euderis sp., Pnigalio epilobii, P. pallipes and Paraleurocerus bicoloripes constituent des nouvelles mentions comme parasites de la mineuse marbrée pour l’Amérique du Nord.Mined leaves were collected in commercial and unsprayed (no insecticides) apple orchards of Quebec and Nova Scotia to determine the relative abundance and diversity of parasites of the spotted tentiform leafminer, Phyllonorycter blancardella [Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae]. In Quebec, 29 species of leafminer parasites were recovered, belonging to 7 families: Aphelinidae, Braconidae, Chalcidae, Eulophidae, Ichneumonidae, Pteromalidae and Scelionidae. The most prevalent species were Pholetesor ornigis (67%), Sympiesis marylandensis (11%), S. serviceicornis (7%), Pnigalio maculipes (1.5%), Tetrasticus spp. (1.2%), while all other species accounted for < 1.0%. Pholetesor pedias, a braconid released in 1983 at Frelighsburg, Quebec, was not found in the 1984 and 1985 surveys. In Nova Scotia, 19 parasite species were recovered, belonging to 5 families : Braconidae, Encyrtidae, Eulophidae, Ichneumonidae and Pteromalidae. The most prevalent species were: Pholetesor ornigis (52%), Pnigalio maculipes (14%), Sympiesis serviceicornis (12%), S. marylandensis (9.5%), Sympiesis spp. (5%), Horismenus fraternus (1.8%), Paraleurocerus sp. (1.3%), Stictopisthus flaviceps (1.1%), while all other species accounted for < 1%. Seven and five species of hyperparasites were recovered in Nova Scotia and Quebec, respectively. New records for North America for the spotted tentiform leafminer as a host are : Sticopisthus bilineatus, S. flaviceps, Euderis sp., Pnigalio epilobii, P. pallipes and Paraleurocerus bicoloripes
